Love Apple Recipes?🍎

Make some delicious homemade Apple Butter! It’s super easy to make using your slow cooker and only requires a few ingredients.

This idea is a simple process of chopping apples, slow cooking them in the Crock-Pot, and then using a hand blender right in the same pot to make the most amazing Apple Butter. The result is a smooth and velvety sweet spread to use on your morning toast, biscuits, pancakes, pork chops, and even on your ice cream as a dessert! SO good.

Things to consider:
  • I used a combination of Granny Smith, Fuji, and Gala apples. You can pick your own combination or use one type.
  • The sweetness level can definitely be adjusted up or down to taste. I looked at different recipes when researching this idea and the ratio of sugar to apples ranged all across the board, so use your best judgement. I felt like two cups were fine in this recipe and not four like the original recipe called for.
  • I did not go through the canning process for this, but that’s a great option for storing UN-refrigerated. You can store fruit spread in the fridge for a couple of weeks or freeze for up to six months.
  • This recipe made 1-quart using 5 pounds of apples.

Great timing- I’m getting a bunch of apples this weekend to make apple butter! Does anyone have a no-sugar added recipe they like? I have seen some that use White Grape juice concentrate for sweetener or just nothing save spices. Thank you!

dumb question… will my immersion blender “hurt” the bottom of my crock pot?

    • Holly

Most immersion blenders have a kind of “guard” around the bottom that will touch the bottom of the pot so that the blade never does.

So, depending on your blender, it shouldn’t hurt your Crock Pot at all, just be gentle when you place the blender itself in the Crock Pot.

I usually just gently place my immersion blender into the pot/pan/dish that I’m using until it just touches the bottom, then raise it up just a little bit, then turn the blender itself on. It will still blend up all the apples (or whatever) in your CrockPot without needing to scrape the bottom of the insert, but even if it does touch the bottom, it won’t hurt anything. Just go slowly and gently! šŸ™‚

    • Lina D

No the lip around the blade I believe prevents it from directly hitting.

  8. Erin

I have made two crockpots of apple butter since going to pick apples! A tip to make it faster to prepare I just sliced apples instead of chopping and I left the peel on! When it was done I put it in the blender and no one knew I left the skin in!
We have been giving out to teachers as happy fall gifts šŸ˜

    • Lina D

Oh neat! I love that idea- thanks for your tips!!

    • Renee

Then your apple butter has extra fiber! Awesome! I HATE peeling apples

  9. Stacy77

    Looks delicious!!!

    • Lina D

      Thanks Stacy!

  10. Tscoyle

I use this recipe. It is super simple and a big hit with the family! I use a blender to purĆ©e since I donā€™t have an immersion blender – works great.

    • Lina D

      Perfect! Thanks for sharing šŸ‘

    • Clarissa Parker

First time making it and Iā€™m using a blender šŸ˜‚

      • Claudette (Hip Sidekick)

Hi, Clarissa. Make sure to let it cool before you place in it the blender. I put it in hot once and then I had a mess everywhere!!šŸ™‚

  11. kiwigrl21

I make applesauce and apple butter every year. My family LOVES it!

    • Lina D

      Great!

  12. Katelyn

I have made a recipe similar to this the past two years and I love it. The apples are soft enough in the end to mash with a fork or potato masher. I also save some for throughout the year by dividing up into quart bags, laying flat and freezing.

  13. K

I make apple butter every year and last year made pumpkin butter. Tastes like pumpkin pie when spread on toast or waffles!!

    • Lina D

Oh my gosh! Sounds awesome. I want pumpkin butter now šŸ˜€šŸ‘

    • Kristi

How do you make your pumpkin butter?

    • Susan H

Will be looking up pumpkin butter now!

  14. Barbara

Looks yummy…..keep the apple recipes and pumpkin ones coming….love the fall!!

  15. Sisi Bee

    Looks yummy.

  16. Susan

I am currently making pumpkin butter in my crock pot. It will be done in less than an hour and my house smells wonderful:) Will try this recipe too.

  17. cmoehn

Is there a low sugar version? My dh would so love this!

    • Jenn

I was curious about that too. I googled and found a few recipes that completely omit the sugar and add a bit of water. Apple juice or cider in place of the water might be a nice middle ground; it would definitely same some sugar as compared to the full recipe!

    • Jaime

I just posted about that below. I also just slice the apples and leave the skin on. No one can tell!

  18. Katie

This is how I make applesauce but with less sugar. What makes this different than just applesauce?

    • CP128

Pretty much just the consistency. Fruit butters have a homogeneous spreadable consistency.

  19. Renee

Can you do this with the Instant Pot too?? I don’t have one yet but I sent my husband link to the Kohl’s deal and reminded him I really really need a Kohl’s card! šŸ˜‰

    • Jaime

Yes! I just posted below. Add 1 cup water, 2 minutes on high. Quick release. Drain water then blend.

      • Lina D

How neat! Thanks for sharing šŸ˜€šŸ‘

        • cindy b

I made apllesauce in the instantpot for the first time this fall. My recipe was like Jaime’s and very easy. Also, very delicious! I added 1/2 cinnamon stick to the pot before cooking. Yum!

    • Shari

Love any ideas for Instant Pot…got mine today for a great deal from Kohls and just ordered the Kitchen Aid Hand Held Blender today…so this sounds like a great starter recipe for using both….watching a lot of youtube, too. Thank you for the great deals from Kohls Team Hip2Save!!

  20. Kristi

How do you make your pumpkin butter?

  21. Kristi

Does this have to be refrigerated right away?

  22. Thama

    Looks delicious!

  23. Julie

Something new to try this fall. Thanks

    • Lina D

      Sure! Enjoy šŸ˜‚

  24. June

Can you jar the apple butter and use later?

    • Lina D

Yes – if you go through the canning process afterwards then you can store unrefrigerated šŸ‘

      • Mackyjane

Would you need to add vinegar to it so you could store it in the pantry after canning?

          • mackyjane

            Thanks Lina!

            • mackyjane

I made this over the weekend, and the amount of sugar that Lina suggested was perfect. It turned out great! I don’t have an immersion blender, but I used my ninja and it worked just fine. I did can the apple butter as it made around 60oz!

              • Lina D

That’s so great! Thanks for sharing šŸ‘šŸ»

  25. Just Jill

Thanks Lina, almost seems too easy! And by the way, I made your white chicken enchiladas last night and with no shame we licked out plates clean!

    • Lina D

Oh my gosh that makes my day! Iā€™m so glad -and yes this is that easy! thanks Jill!

  26. Scarlet Bluefield

We used to live near a town that had an annual apple butter festival. They would make apple butter in huge (like I could fit in them) copper kettles over wood fires, right in the street! They stirred with canoe paddles! So much fun–great memories šŸ™‚

    • Lina D

      Wow sounds great!

  27. Jaime

Wow, 2 cups of added sugar!! I make something similar but don’t add any sugar, and it’s just as delicious. Cook on high for 4 hrs. (Or 2 minutes in the instant pot!! with 1 cup water, drain, then blend.) After pureeing the apples with the immersion blender, I let it cook on high another hour, but with the lid open to thicken it up. We use it in sandwiches with peanut butter or almond butter (instead of jelly) and my kids love it.

    • Lina D

Sounds great! Thanks for sharing šŸ‘

  28. riss

I never had apple butter ….is it like sweetened apple sauce? I don’t like Apple sauce, but this looks good!

  29. Susan H

Well just put this all into my crockpot. Had a bunch of apples that were going on the soft side previously picked from the orchard. Perfect recipe to use them up. Thanks foe the easy recipe!

    • Lina D

      Sure!

  30. MammaK

thanks for the reminder, made some last my husband loved it

    • Lina D

      That is so great!

  31. M

I must really trust you ladies…I didn’t even taste it (like an idiot, it didn’t even cross my mind) to make sure it was even fairly close (since I didn’t really weigh the apples)…but I just threw it all in, stirred a few times and oh my goodness – YUM! My kiddo loves to eat but not breakfast – put this on some toast this morning – gone in 2 minutes flat! He loves apple butter and really loved it. Can’t wait to have it tonight with some biscuits. Will be doing this again, really soon. šŸ™‚ Thank you.

Also, how “soft” can an apple be and still be used in apple butter?

  32. Diane Lloyd

I don’t know how to can sterilizing. Can I just put in clean jars and freeze and be OK?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes you can freeze in jars and would be good for a few months in the freezer. Make sure to leave some room at the top of bar for expansion.
