I think Bestow is doing a great job. It is backed by 2 well respected companies in the insurance industry and their instant decision/no exam insurance is the cheapest I have found.

That said, if you don’t mind an exam then you can often get the same policy cheaper through the more traditional insurance companies (or something like Select Quote or Policy Genius).

For me, I am choosing a Bestow policy because I had a bad experience with Life Insurance labs previously. Very worth it and took me less than 10 minutes from start to paying for my policy.

Whole life and universal life are permanent policies – they typically stay with you no matter how old you get and premiums are usually constant throughout , term policies like this one are temporary policies. Think of permanent policies as owning a house and term policies are like renting. At the end of the term, you no longer have a policy. So if you buy a 20 year term policy, after 20 years, you no longer have a policy and if you want life insurance, you’ll have to buy a new policy at the older age, which is always going to be at a higher premium the older you get.

So why would anyone buy a term policy? It’s less expensive than the a permanent policy for the same amount of coverage. It’s good for those who need life insurance to make sure their family is taken care of but they can’t afford the higher cost of a permanent policy. For example, if you buy a $200k house with a 30 year mortgage, you might want to get a 30 year term policy for $200k in coverage. That way if something happens to you tomorrow, your family won’t have to give up the home.. even better is that they wouldn’t have to pay taxes on it.

It’s always good to have a mix of term and permanent policies. Even if you have it through your work, you should still have your own policy. Life insurance through work is usually cheaper because it’s a group policy, so you’re essentially getting a discount because you’re part of the group. But that also means that if you leave that place of employment, you usually can’t take it with you… you quit, you get fired, you retire, you’re laid off, etc. Unless you plan on dying while you’re still working, you’ll want to get your own policy outside the work place. Again, it gets more expensive every year and at some point, you might no longer qualify to buy it, due to age or new health issues. This is one reason to get your kids their own permanent life policy as early as possible. It’s cheap to start at their age and they can take it into adulthood with them and won’t have to go through underwriting for that portion.

Sorry for the long response, hope that helps.

That is superb advice. Do have more than one policy. My husband had two policies. One paid very quickly which is what I used to pay funeral expenses. One took 6 months to pay. If I hadnโ€™t been working the kids and I would have been in real trouble. you think that once you are older and the children are gone you wonโ€™t need life insurance but life is unpredictable. Many grandparents never thought in a million years that they would be raising their grandkids but they are and at that age it is very hard to get. Go to the library and get several books on life insurance. You canโ€™t make good decisions and ask good questions without a little background information.

I really appreciate this. You have helped me a lot – this is a godsend. Thank you.

Ok so my dad was killed when I was younger. Because of that I was set to get life insurance when pregnant with my first. Then we took out second policies two years later. We do think we have enough coverage for my husband and ok coverage for me. All four policies are 30 yr term. We did all we could and we do not have any more money to put towards life insurance but should anything happen our three little kids should be ok financially. I suggest to everyone no matter how poor that they have life insurance if they have kids. So my question is..should we try to get even More coverage thatโ€™s permanent?? We collectively have about 2 million in life insurance. Itโ€™s worth it to me to have peace of mind.

      • A

Cm..Thanks for explaining & making it so easy to understand. Katie can you please share which insurance do you have? We have one & it’s term. If we go for permanent the payment is very high. Thanks!!

Make the time to look at your policies. Don’t put it off. Then run some scenarios in your head. If something should happen to my college student, who has $50,000 in student loans, am I in a position to pay that off? What if I lose my job? One of the hardest parts of the pandemic for the financial advisor in the family has been the phone calls, usually from an elderly woman, saying, “He said he took care of me.” There’s fear in their voices because they have NO IDEA if they are taken care of or not, because their husband handled all the money. Sometimes, he took care of her, sometimes there’s enough to bury him and that’s about it. Unfortunately, the people who don’t have a lot of money are the ones who really, really need life insurance. Make sure you know what you have and what you don’t. Get several quotes from different companies. Some are good at hiding fees.

    • DebJ

If a student dies with college debt that is not the responsibility of the parent to pay unless they co-signed.

Federal loans are discharged, but what happens with private loans varies. You should know and be prepared in case the worst happens.

Thank you so much for this. My policy just ended this year, Iโ€™m 50 and the renewal was going to be $250 a month. For the same amount of coverage, $300,000, I was able to obtain a policy for $110 a month

I just got a new policy with another company because I went from working full-time to part-time so no company life insurance now; such a hassle to go through hour-long phone calls, nurse visit, emails, etc. I just went to the Bestow link to see if the cost would be a little cheaper. I’m 5″10″ and 125 pounds & have been for 30+ years – was denied as my “BMI was outside their parameters”. Darn high metabolism… Maybe I should try again after Christmas when I’ve eaten more.
Thanks for the info though, it is so important to make sure your family is taken care of if anything happens. It is also super important to have everything in place as well. My brother, who had recently divorced and has four sons, passed away and had no will. It was not easy to get everything all together for sure. There’s a great book called “In Case You Get Hit by a Bus” that is easy to read and has so many helpful tips on how to have your finances in order so that your loved ones will have one less thing to stress about wen the time comes.

I am looking for insurance, but I refuse to use any policy that requires labs. I had two !horrible! experiences with labs, and one insurance company put all of my husbands medications down as I take them and I donโ€™t take any medication. It raised my premium crazy high with his health issues. They said that they had no way to fix it. Itโ€™s such a mess. The people that come to draw labs were not properly trained. My husband worked at/ran over a dozen hospitals for over two decades. He knew immediately they didnโ€™t know what they were doing. It was scary. Never again!!!!!
Any suggestions for a company without lab work?
