The Lite-Brite Classic Toy Will Light Up Your Christmas Morning (Well, If You’ve Got Batteries!)
Basic Fun has released an upgraded version of the classic Lite-Brite with an Ultimate edition. This means it has a larger screen, more colorful pegs, and additional lighting options!
To see if this upgraded toy is worthy of your holiday shopping list, Collin and Stetson unboxed and reviewed the Lite-Brite Ultimate Classic on this Facebook Live.

Here’s what Collin had to say about the new Lite-Brite!
“So not cool Lite-Brite! 🤪 We totally failed on this one because come to find out, this toy doesn’t actually include the batteries. That’s a huge bummer and one reason why toys win so many points with me, so this was a big let down. Also on Christmas morning, who wants to deal with having to find batteries?!
Personally, I think this Lite-Brite also feels very cheap. It’s made out of super light-weight plastic. It’s really true, they just don’t make them like they used to. I like the concept of the Lite-Brite, but this one is a thumbs down for me, and I’d much rather have the classic version.”
• Collin’s overall rating – 4 out of 10
• Stetson’s overall rating – 6 out of 10

I am so excited! I just ordered one for my daughter for Christmas!!
Woohoo! Hope she loves it!
Itโs about 4โ wide, sooooo disappointing, I saw it at BJs and couldnโt believe it was not like the older version when I was a kid… I put it back, it came with extra templates because it was a BJs version, but still…I wish it was like the original ๐
The screen is more than eight inches wide.
The screen is NOT 4 inches wide.
โUpdated Lite-Brite Ultimate Classic is now brighter then ever with a bigger screen and more pegs! Screen measures 8.125โ W x 6.875โ H. โ
Perhaps you meant it is 4 inches deep or thick? Both of my kids have these (ages 5 & 3)and have so much fun playing with them! The kickstand on the back isn’t the most stable but I like that it’s not as thick as the old version because they can sit on the couch with it or on the floor and it’s easy to carry around!
I actually got one for my birthday last year. It was my favorite toy as a kid. It’s the full size one from my childhood.
I, always, wanted one as a kid. But, never got one. The closest I came was a box of refills. Really, mother, how could you mistake that for an actual Lite-Brite? I’m 47 now and won’t buy one for my inner child. I think that inner child is a bit too old to still want that toy – LOL
Iโm 49 and that is totally something my mom would have done. My kids got one some time ago and never really played with it.
thats really cool
We got this at Target this past year and itโs a great, fun classic! Not sure about whether itโs full size etc. but itโs still a big hit!
Yay! Happy to hear how well liked it is, Nita! Thanks so much for the feedback!
We have this! It works just like the classic and has the same size surface to work on. It’s just not as fat to the back because of better lighting technology than 30 years ago ๐ My six year old son loves it.
I still have the original from when I was a kid, still works too! I also have many other original 80’s toys!!
How neat! I love looking back at some of the older toys! Thanks for sharing, Nicole!
I still have mine from when I was a kid too! Do you know where I can get refill paper for it?
Any way to get cheaper refills? Off-brand blank ones perhaps? Or is the screen the right size for black construction paper? Canโt fathom paying almost $1 per sheet for refills.
I donโt have one, so I havenโt tried or looked at it, but I would imagine you could make copies and print them on black construction paper? Or that someone will create some and upload them on Pinterest or something?
You can print the from Pinterest
I would just use construction paper and cut it to size, a couple sheets at a time. Then the kiddos can use other colors than just black, and get more creative?!?!
I got one for my son as a gift! It wasnt on his list, but I loved having one as a kid, and I think he will too:)
Yay! I remember this being my favorite toy!
Our came with batteries so we got ๐ lucky. I enjoyed it my son likes different light options.4!!! Nice night light and turns off itself.
I bought this last year as a Santa gift for my son. He loves it! He even uses it without the template.
That’s cool! Thanks, Kristi D!
Seen this at Big Lots today for $12
Haha, I think our “cringey” word was “corny!” If only they could truly appreciate how fab their mama and uncle are ๐
We bought this last year and the kids played with it more then more expensive toys. Highly recommend.
SWEET! Thanks so much for the recommendation! Glad to hear it was a hit!
Most of the Lite Brites out there don’t advertise having a case for the pegs. I ordered one for my daughter from Kohls for a couple dollars more because it has a case for the pegs that attaches to the Lite brite. Will be much easier for her on car trips!
I got this for my 4yo in the Spring. It’s much smaller and its not as bright ๐ The grid is smaller.
That said he did all the templates it came with and he’s about to finish the refills too. Even baby brother loves to sit (carefully supervised) and “help”. We get a lot of mileage out of it. And there is something to be said for not needing to be plugged in.
