Here’s why my family and I love cooking with our Ooni Pizza Oven.

pulling a homemade pizza out of an Ooni Karu oven

Love authentic wood-fired pizza?

One of my favorite hobbies is making the most AWESOME pizza at home. We purchased the Ooni Karu portable wood-fired oven several months ago and have been enjoying the delicious 12-inch pizzas the Ooni bakes more than I ever imagined.

This oven could possibly be the best thing that came out of my family spending so much time at home, and it makes an incredible gift.

And for a limited time, you can score a whopping $100 off – that’s 25% off and beats their normal Black Friday deal!

Pizza baked in an Ooni

Our Ooni pizza oven bakes a chewy, perfectly melted pizza in just 90 seconds!

I know! The oven only takes about 20 minutes to heat up using small pieces of wood and it can reach up to 945 degrees. The Ooni is like pizza magic, and I am so all about it!

There’s no need to go to a fancy restaurant or spend thousands on a traditional pizza oven when you can have one of these for far less that makes incredible Neapolitan-style pizza!

putting a pizza into the Ooni

Compact portable pizza ovens are where it’s at!

I love that it can easily fit on a tabletop outside or on an apartment balcony, and our Ooni Karu pizza oven only weighs about 25 pounds.

You can purchase a handy cover with handles so it can easily travel with you anywhere and would be so fun to take camping, tailgating, or to a friend’s house! There are several pizza oven styles and sizes in the Ooni lineup in case the Karu’s portability isn’t as important to you.

ooni Pizza oven in the box

Why did we pick an Ooni pizza oven?

After researching online for quite a while, Ooni is the pizza oven brand that kept popping up as one of the highest-rated by numerous online sources including Wired.com. They have a 5-year warranty when you register your oven and also offer free shipping on orders over $69.99 and free returns.

Speaking of returns, Ooni has their Great Pizza Guarantee! If you are not satisfied, they will gladly accept returns within a 60-day period.

wood in the Ooni pizza oven

Ooni has different models to choose from ranging from $300-$800 depending on the size of pizza it makes and the fuel source it requires, such as chunks of wood, wood pellets, charcoal, or gas. Go here to compare all the Ooni pizza oven models.

The 12-inch Karu model we own cooks with wood chunks or charcoal. We purchased small pieces of oak wood for burning in the Ooni from Amazon to make things easy and only use a few pieces for a batch of pizzas.

making pizza on an Ooni pizza peel

We have always been big fans of wood-fired pizza at restaurants and now we can make our own at home!

This is a legit wood-fired pizza that doesn’t take long to cook and is easy to do. We have done lots of pizza testing on our Ooni and I 100% think this was a great purchase. 🙌 We overcooked and burned the very first pizza we tried and then quickly got the hang of it after that.

My kids enjoy picking their own topping combinations and it can turn into a fun family activity.

In fact, it’s even a money-saving investment!

Our tab at our local wood-fired pizza place could easily be at least $60+ for my family. Since the Karu 12 pizza oven is currently priced at $299, we’d have to use it about 5 times to come out ahead and that has already been accomplished.

kids cooking with the Ooni Pizza Oven

My son and his buddy made homemade dough and then made their own pizzas for his birthday and they were so proud.

I have older kids who aren’t as enthusiastic about family time quite as much anymore 😂, so this has become something we can do together, and my kids look forward to wood-fired pizza night.

making pizza dough at home

Pizza dough is a whole topic unto itself, but don’t be intimidated by it!

You can go all-in by using this awesome wood-fired rustic pizza dough recipe I use with yeast and “00” Flour, or use your own favorite pizza dough recipe. Even easier, you can simply buy premade store-bought pizza dough.

The recipe I use is pretty straightforward and needs to proof and raise for a few hours, so I just plan ahead. Check out Trader Joe’s for pizza dough as that one is my favorite store-bought option.

steak in the Ooni pizza oven

Pizza ovens aren’t limited to cooking just pizza!

By using cast iron pans, you can essentially use it like any other oven to cook things quickly at high temps. There are a ton of pizza, meat, fish, and dessert pizza recipes on Ooni.com, and there’s also a large Ooni Facebook community that shares helpful ideas and tips.

steak and veggies in cast iron pan

Check out this awesome wood-fired steak and veggies recipe we made the other night using the Ooni pizza oven! It was one of the best steaks I have ever had. The process included heating a cast iron pan to above 700 degrees, then using a thermometer gun to check. We then just put the steaks on the pan in the oven for just 90 seconds on each side. The result was a perfectly caramelized steak with lots of oak wood flavor – and was insanely yummy!

I am looking forward to trying a dessert pizza, maybe a Nutella banana one using my homemade copycat Nutella– YUM.

Here are the helpful pizza oven accessories we have and love:

  • The oven does not come with a pizza peel, but you’ll need one to insert and take out your pizza into and out of the oven. We purchased the 12-inch Ooni pizza peel at the same time as purchasing the oven, and have had really liked it.
  • We needed to upgrade to a nice pizza cutter, and this pizza rocker blade is the BEST. You can slice up pizza in one single motion and the toppings stay on! One of my favorite kitchen gadgets!

We have it and it has been an incredible experience! the steaks flavor are out of this world.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes!! That was unexpected for me. Love it! Thanks for sharing Emi! 🙌

  2. Suzanne H

I am very interested in this for the summer. My family LOVES pizza but we NEVER agree on toppings so it’s always a chore to order pizza! Questions: where do you store it? Do you pack it away after each use or leave out? If you pack it away, how long does it take to cool off? If you leave it out, what do you do to protect it from the elements – use the carry case? How safe is it heat wise (meaning would you trust a young teen to operate it or no)? What kind of table do you need; I assume something heat resistant like a tile topped table?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hi Suzanne! Yes, it’s a great way to customize pizza for everyone!
So honestly we just keep it set up under our patio. It’s stainless steel like our BBQ grill and keep it on the grill shelf. We actually want to build or buy a small table for it. Ooni sells a table and I see lots of folks buy a stainless prep table from Costco or Sams. It stays hot for awhile so we use it on our marble patio table and then let it cool.
I trust my 15 year old. He can handle it. Probably not my 13 year old yet- I would help her. Hope this helps!

      • Suzanne H

Very helpful; thank you for taking the time to answer my questions!

      • Chris

I have had mine for about 18 months (COVID purchase) I love it and living in MN, I pack mine away after each use because I don’t have a good spot to leave it out. The underside of the Ooni doesn’t transfer much heat, when I use it outside for neighborhood pizza parties I set it up on an old school folding table (you know the style your grandparents or parents had) 🙂 Great way to make your own customized pizzas for everyone! it is definitely a learning curve in forming the pizzas and learning to launch them into the kicker and actually cooking. once you get the hang of it, they are a lot of fun. In summers in MN I will text neighbors and have made as many as 20 pizzas on a Saturday night over a 2ish hour span just tossing cold ones back, b.s’ing with the neighbors. It takes 30-60 minutes to cool down and you can move it around easily. I did purchase a table from Ooni this winter just haven’t put it together yet to keep it on and then I can just wheel it in and out when i use it. If you do purchase spend some time looking into making the dough, I have found the flour for me in MN is the toughest thing to find, so I have resorted to buying on amazon in 25 pound cases (in 2021 I went through about 75 pounds of 00 flour) also you need to use block cheeses not pre-shredded for the melting factor 🙂 Good Luck!!

        • Leigh D

We have had an OONI for years…..even had to wait for 9 months when we ordered it. My question….How do you NOT burn the pizza??? We have tried everything!!!!! I am not the only one, I feel like we got a bad one

  3. frank

i have the ooni koda 16. it is gas. standard type is propane and we converted it to natural gas. ❤️. one of the best features of our outdoor kitchen.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Awesome! Thanks Frank!

    • Jenn H

Frank, did you have to buy the Ooni conversion kit? We already have a type of conversion for our grill. Wondering if that will work? This is a Father’s Day gift for my husband so I can’t just ask him :).

  4. kelleymcghie

Got the hubs a Koda 16 for Xmas and it is by far the most used thing I’ve ever gotten him. It makes amazing pizza, breads, steak, fish. It goes on and on and on. I will say that if you e never made prizes before, try doing that for a bit to make sure you enjoy it. It’s an art and takes time to learn and do well. Definitely awesome!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks Kelley! I agree it’s a fun hobby!

  5. Michelle

Ask and you shall receive! H2S is the best….. I inquired about this oven when Lina posted about the pizza rocker blade and H2S quickly responded that Lina would do a post about it! Thank you so much for this. I have been researching pizza ovens for a long time and I think I just made my mind up THANKS to you! H2S is the BEST! ❤

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Ahh yay Michelle! I’m glad you found this helpful. My husband and I tell our our friends about this oven, and Hip2Save readers are like friends/fam to me so it was natural to want to share with you all ❤️🙌

  6. Hammy

We absolutely love ours!! It was a fairly recent addition to our kitchen when the pandemic hit and we had been feeling a little guilty about the expense of it. But then we were so happy we had it. It has made staying in a bit easier and in reality we have saved a ton on takeout and it has paid for itself several times over. We cook all kinds of things it too, not just pizza!!

  7. AnnA

Thank you for this post. I have been researching pizza ovens for a while now and just can’t decide which one I want. I’m comparing to the one that you have Lina and then the other one that is the gas propane tank option. I’m trying to figure out if the option you have the karu, does it allow you to still attach a propane tank to it? And if I were to get the gas propane one the Koda, will I still get the Smoky taste in my pizza and food without using wood chips. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh interesting Anna- that was actually our thinking too on preferring wood. Since I haven’t tasted the gas option I can’t really speak to the taste…I do know that on our model you can purchase a part that allows you to use gas (from my understanding…) I’d love to hear from someone else who has a gas pizza oven if they love the taste…

      • Maiya

We have a gas one and do not notice any difference in taste. We have loved experiencing different types of pizzas.

        • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

          Oh GOOD! Thanks for commenting!

        • AnnA

Do you still get the smokey flavor in your pizza?

    • Holly

We have gas and tastes amazing!

  8. dealzgurl

My budget tends to be tight sometimes too but I love when H2S posts stuff like this. It gives me something to aspire to if I really, really want it. I’d love to have a pizza oven because my homemade, oven-cooked attempts seldom come out great, lol. This is so neat. Thanks for posting!

    • Chantel

Heat a pizza stone in your I en for 45 minutes at the highest temperature your oven will go. This is usually about 550 degrees. You will get a good pizza that way. If you want the wood fired experience then use your grill with a pizza stone preheated to as hot as you can get it.

  9. Ann

Thank you for this post! My husband is nearly impossible to buy for, but I know he will like this! I ordered it right away and I really hope to have it by his birthday on March 23!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh perfect! Happy Birthday to him- he will love it! <3

      • Ann

He was so excited when he opened it today! Looking forward to trying it over the weekend!

        • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

          YAYYYY!! Yippee! Enjoy that pizza!

  10. Luv

How do you clean it after use? Is it hard to clean up?

    • Darla

Easy to clean. Basically anything that gets dropped in it just burns off and you wipe it once it cools. The stone gets discolored but you just turn it over each time you use it and the bottom gets burned off. The stainless gets a patina to it because, well, it’s stainless.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Ya it’s easy to wipe off, and not a super messy process in general.

  11. Amy

Thank you for posting this… just ordered one! My husband had been researching pizza ovens recently, and this was the perfect option for the new house we are moving to at the end of this month. We love making pizza at home with homemade sauce and Trader Joe’s dough, so can’t wait to use it!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh yay!! Congrats on the new home. I hope you love your pizza oven as much as we do <3

  12. Sunny

Thank you for this review! We have the Ooni Koda on order…we have the table, cover, cast iron Pan and peel. The oven itself is back ordered until April, but we can’t wait to get it going!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh nice! I hope you enjoy!

  13. msfrizzle

That looks like a personal pan size 😕 I would need 10 ovens to feed my family of 12

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Ya that could take awhile! ha

    • kelleymcghie

We did a party for super bowl. 15 pizzas in 20 minutes with around 45 minutes for prep. It helps both my hubs and I prep and serve. Saved probably $150 in pizza we would’ve ordered and everyone got what they wanted.

      • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Wow that’s fantastic! Thanks for sharing 🙌

    • Chantel

If you are cooking at a very high temperature then it should only take a minute or two to bake.
One adult does the baking and one stretches the dough out. Everyone else tops the own pizza how they like it. If you do it in the grill you could either make a larger pizza or two smaller ones.

  14. kelleymcghie

I suggest you get on the Ooni community FB page if you’re interested in an Ooni. Also, come Black Friday they usually have a site wide sale. Their customer service is AMAZING!

  15. Amanda H

Hi Lina! Thanks so much for sharing your experience with this pizza oven. It is definitely not in our budget at the moment but I will make it happen😉 I’m curious though, have you attempted to make any keto pizzas in it yet?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks Amanda! I’ve read that none of the keto crust alternatives are likely to stand up to high heat like that on the pizza peel -so have not tried. I just saw a recipe though where you make a cauliflower crust in a round cast iron dish and cook it in the pizza oven so that could be an option.

      • Amanda H

Bummer! I still think it would be super fun for the whole family and can’t wait to surprise them all with it…eventually😉 By then I’m sure someone (prob you) will have mastered the keto crust. I love the idea of the cast iron too!

  16. Beth

My husband has dreamed of building a pizza oven for years!! I am going to get this for him for Father’s Day. And then we can eat pizza while he continues to dream. 😁 Thanks for the review!!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh that’s so sweet! Thanks for sharing Beth!

    • Toni

My husband also had aspirations of building one. 🙂 It hasn’t materialized but I think he would love this!

  17. katie-17

We got one, but I’m having a hard time getting the middle to get cooked. Any suggestions?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hmm maybe try and get the crust a little thinner and also turn it. Also if theres too many toppings can affect it. Good luck! I don’t mind a well done crust on the outside so maybe try cooking longer also?

    • animity

Cooking the dough first for a bit then putting the toppings on can help with that too.

      • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

        Great idea!

  18. Amelia

We bought this for our “big” kids for Christmas last year as their “experience ” gift. We’ve had SO much fun with it out by the pool. Recently, we were able to host a large group of college kids (we have twins in college) and we served the pizzas!! The night before my daughter and I par-baked 60 individual crusts. We stayed up until 330 am but it was such a great memory!!! 🤪😂 When the kids arrived, they could make their own pizza from a variety of toppings. Each pizza was done in less than a minute, so it took very little time to get the line moved quickly. We have also purchased the aluminum pans on Amazon you’ve listed on H2S before. This is what we use to transfer to the peel and then serve/cut the pizza on. I have Celiac disease,
so I cook my pizza on the pan to avoid cross contamination. They’re inexpensive and hold up great!!! Also we bought a huge bag of wood pellets at Sam’s or Lowe’s and they have the best price. It has lasted and lasted. ❤

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Wow how fun Amelia! That sounds like a great time. Thanks for sharing 💕🙌

  19. cbogner

So would take and bake like Papa Murphy’s cook well in these?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

So yes ready to bake pizzas would work, but smaller ones as Papa Murphy’s may be a little large? Just check the size of pizzas you are trying to bake.

  20. Donna

My son decided he had to have one for our household and we can’t seem to get the hang of it yet after a couple tries. Top burns bottom is doughy

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

I have seen where some people cook their dough for a little bit first, then add toppings, then put it in the oven. Hope that helps!
