cheeseburgers cooking on outdoor griddle

When my husband and I were setting out to buy a grill, I couldn’t believe how expensive they can be! On top of that, the selection is so overwhelming. I really had no idea how we were going to figure out which one to buy and know we were getting a good price for it.

Then we came across the propane-powered flat top griddle style grills and loved the idea of having so much more versatility with what we could cook outside. A quick visit to, and I came across this griddle by Blackstone with amazing reviews (available on, too). It was also way more affordable compared to other grills we had seen. No brainer—purchased!

cooking bacon strips on top of griddle

One of the first foods I wanted to test out on the griddle was bacon. If you follow Hip2Save, you know I live a ketogenic lifestyle (& launched a website all about keto!), so being able to cook my beloved bacon outdoors on this flat top was a huge win for me! 🥓 It crisps up perfectly, and it’s now my preferred cooking method.

On a standard grill with grates, I’d have to cook the bacon either on foil or in a grilling pan, along with constantly worrying about flare up from the bacon grease. Even better, I can make a whole breakfast on this cooktop by throwing some eggs into the mix!

cooking diced red onions on griddle

Sautéing onions on this griddle flat top is also easy peasy—no basket or other cooking vessels required. Then that savory taste infuses into whatever food I cook on top of that spot, like burger patties or jalapeno poppers.

This griddle has a huge 36″ cooking surface, so we can grill up an entire meal for our family of five (with room to spare). No need to worry about hot spots either, since the whole griddle heats evenly.

cleaning griddle with flat edge scraper

Plus, cleaning the griddle couldn’t be easier! Using a flattened metal scraper, you can clear off the surface of food debris in a single swipe. Then, just scoop up the pile of scraps and toss it into the garbage. A clean top in just a matter of seconds!

I get that some people may prefer traditional grated grills and can’t part with those perfectly parallel grilling marks, but for me, this griddle exceeds my expectations for an outdoor cooking appliance.

Functional, frugal, and perfect for my fat-fueled lifestyle!

This looks like a grill I would love. I could make hibachi chicken and shrimp on a bigger surface.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

That does sound yummy! Thanks for taking the time to comment!

  2. Em

My hubby and I have been talking about getting one of these! Thanks for the post!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

You bet! We honestly love ours! It’s awesome how many different items you can easily cook on the griddle from burgers to pancakes to eggs – and we love how easy it is to clean!

      • mouni

        How is the clean-up?

  3. Lana

My brother in law loves his and is constantly posting pictures of yummy meals cooking on his on Facebook. We have an infrared grill and there is no going back from that either. It never flares and the meat does not dry out. I think that having a flat top in addition to our infrared would be awesome and give us so many options.

    • CJ

That’s what I’m talking about!!! I need a double grill half infrared and half griddle! Sold! 🙂

  4. charlette

We love ours. Went on a camping trip with friends who cooked all our meals on theirs. I got the smaller version (28″) for a great price on Amazon.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh how awesome!! So great to have that on a camping trip for yummy meals! 😋

  5. Krystal

We just got this grill two weeks ago and LOVE it! I also thought I would miss the grill marks but I don’t. Great Buy!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

lol Too funny – I thought the same thing but don’t miss those grill marks either! 😉

  6. Nicole

We love our Blackstone too! Such a fast way to cook and easy clean up.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      YES! 🙌

  7. Julie m

We bought the 28″ in one on black Friday. We have made hash browns, pancakes, baxin, eggs, sausage, burgers, Philly cheese steak. We also use it to saute vegetables to go with whatever we cook on our charcoal grill or electric smoker.
The griddle is so versatile. You can use it to warm several tortillas at once. Or you can toast all of your burger buns while your meat is cooking on a grill.
The griddle has been one of our go to outdoor devices since Hurricane Michael and living in an RV. We can cook for a family of four very quickly and by cooking outdoors we keep the inside of RV nice and cool.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

SWEET! Thanks for letting us know how many yummy food items you have been cooking up with yours!

  8. CJ

They need to make a half and half one with half griddle, half grates. (I don’t always want my meat sitting in its fat drippings). Let’s get on that idea and make one 🙂

When was this griddle so cheap last summer? Was it on Amazon Prime day? I’m definitely getting one this year if they do!!!

    • Julie m

We bought our 28″ in one for $118 on black Friday and it included a free cover

      • kellyfornia

Julie, where did you purchase it at on Black Friday?

    • Lana

I’ll be looking for a deal on this but meanwhile I have a 12 inch cast iron skillet that would do the same thing on our existing grill. There’s only two of us so that should be plenty of room for veggies and such.

      • CJ

        Awesome! Thanks Meredith!

    • Shawna

They do make half and half ones. We have the tail gator the other side is a burner and we bought a grill box for that side. The right side is the hibachi. It folds up for travel. It’s pretty heavy though but we love it and take it camping with us. We also use it at home right on the porch.

  9. mel

I’ve had this griddle for years now. We bring it camping to cook all our meals. At home we use it for smashed burger, hibatchi, killer breakfasts (really does make the perfect bacon). Sausage peppers onion. You name it ! I totally recommend to anyone.

After scraping the nasty off you steam wash it with water while the grill is on. I take tongs and paper towel (you can use a dish cloth you dont mind staining) and wipe it down with water while steam cleaning it

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

How cool! Thanks for the helpful tip! Good to know how easily it has cleaned up for you!

  10. Ashley

Meh if it’s not charcoal might as well cook inside imo.

    • vmm

      that’s what i think too…i don’t get it!

  11. DeeC

Does anyone know if they sell a outdoor cover to protect it?

    • Nancy

Yes, there is a cover for it. Walmart and Amazon sells them.

  12. Anna

I love ours but I always wonder after I steam wash it and wripe it with paper towel, that towel is always black and then I wonder is that’s bad that it touches the food and we eat it. I know it’s a later if grease but still.

  13. Allison M.

Is there a cover for it? That’s my only holdup on that type of grill.

    • Lynn

I’ll bet amazon has one with a little research.

    • Heather

Yes!!! We have a cover for both our small and big one! Best purchase we have made in a while!!!

    • Lisa

I have the 36” one, purchased a hard top cover and a rain resistant one. Love it so much!!! You really can’t go wrong. I have this and my Traeger grill…the perfect combo!!!!

      • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

        That’s awesome, Lisa!

  14. Tiff

We love ours! We eat so much healthier!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

That’s great to hear, Tiff! Thanks for sharing with us! You sure can cook up some great food options on this griddle!

  15. Melanie

I just wanted to provide an idea for the Traeger users in the world. We use a perforated pizza pan to cook our bacon on in the Traeger and bacon has NEVER tasted better and it is cooked to PERFECTION with no mess in the house. You really need to try it!! Makes my mouth water just thinking about it!

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for the idea, Melanie! That’s a great one!

    • Kim

Awesome thanks! We love our traeger

  16. hellfiregainz

Its on my list. Been waiting patiently for years for a clearance catch.

  17. Tonya Hall

We have one like this and my husband uses it every chance he gets. Very nice to be able to cook anything and not worry about it falling through.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Oh yes! That for sure would be a great perk to having this! My hubby hates it when food falls through the grates on his grill! Thanks for mentioning that!

  18. Denise

Does anyone know if these break down to take camping? We have been looking at these for a long time but aren’t sure where we put this for transporting.

    • Lana

Check Amazon. There are many tabletop models.

    • Shawna

This full size does not break or fold down for travel but the tailgater does! We use it at home and fold it up and take it camping with us. It is heavier than we expected but we love it. Ours has a hibachi and a burner. It came with a cover we got a package from hsn. We ended up purchasing a grill box that goes on top of where the burner is and use that instead of the burner.

  19. Michelle

We bought one on black friday and love it. It’s so easy to clean. We would never go back to just a grill. Such a great purchase.

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for letting us know, Michelle! We are glad to hear how much you love it.

  20. OregonLexy

This sounds so awesome but over $200 is a whole lot of money – need one of these just more economical

    • CJJ

I just bought the 22” one at Walmart for $147 with hard cover and legs and adapter for big propane tank! Sounded like a good deal to me!

  21. Mike

Have this and recommend it to everyone. Everyone that tastes the smash burgers I make on it ends up going to buy their own.

I have the travel 17” and ended up getting a 36” for the parties as well.
    I guess I’m a fanboy but I love it!

    • Mike

Wait until the end of season (if you’re not in a rush). Target and walmart have the 17” ones on clearance and Walmart usually clearances their 28” and 36” ones too if you want those sizes and not the smaller one.

      • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks, Mike! I’ll take one of those burgers now!🍔

  22. Breanna

We bought a Camp Chef from Scheels that has grates and the flat top and my husband absolutely loves it!

  23. Malinda

Love Blackstone! Started out with the 28″. Recently upgraded to the combo. It has a 28″ griddle with a side burner/deep fry station on the side. It has a lid, cutting board/prep area, paper towel and trash bag holders, and enclosed storage underneath. (Walmart $396) Their covers are also very heavy duty and good-looking. It’s great for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

It sounds like a great investment for you, Malinda!

  24. Doc

You can buy the black stone grill top add on for about $70 – you can pop off the flat top (super heavy) and drop in the grill top if you want

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks, Doc! That’s a great idea!

  25. Neilly

We love ours too! We got the smaller one on Black Friday. I remembered you mentioned it last year so we gave it a shot. It is fantastic! We have made all sorts of things from fajitas to pancakes.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

How cool! Awesome to hear how much you have been enjoying cooking with yours, Neilly! Thanks a TON for taking the time to comment!

  26. Michelle

We have one and love it! Besides using it for steaks and hamburgers, we also really enjoy making pancakes, eggs, and hashbrowns on it.

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Your comment is making me hungry, Michelle! All those foods – yum! Thanks for taking the time to let us know!

  27. Tsquared

If you already have a grill and don’t want this kind of investment-buy the Original Baking Steel. I have one that I keep in my oven always. It can also be used on the grill. I just received an email with this 20% off code for the steel or griddle-DadRocks

  28. HipUP

    how to clean it?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Hi there! A flattened metal scraper works awesome with just one swipe! Hope that helps!

  29. marie

Wonder if it produces that same “grilled” taste?

  30. Stacy

We have had one of these for the past 3 years. We absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! It makes cooking so easy and clean up is a breeze! Highly recommend it!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Yay! SO glad you have been loving yours too, Stacy! Thanks a bunch for the feedback!

      • CAJ

For the record, you guys always influence me. For good, to buy things, and against wasting my money for things. I had fully intended to wait until the His goes on sale, but since I missed the sale last year (they sold out) and hubby really liked it then, and all of the great reviews here, I broke down and bought not one but two of these for him for Father’s Day (I couldn’t decide between the small 22” one with a hard top for $149 at Walmart and the 28” one for $179 at Walmart so I’ll let him chose). I also got accessories so he will be able to cook all weekend! It’s more expensive than another polo shirt and dress shorts that I was going to get him for Father’s Day BUT the upside is he will actually love his AND he will enjoy cooking on it while I sit on the lawn chair watching…a true win-win!!! 😉

Thanks for posting this, HIp2Save and for all the comments, H2S community! I sure do count on you all!

        • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Aww, You are SO very welcome! Thanks a TON for the sweet feedback! 🥰 Super glad you could grab them both! I bet he will love them!

        • Nancy

That’s exactly what I count on as well, the post along with the H2S community for chiming in on the posts. It really is a huge help when deciding on purchases, especially those that are of the larger sized purchases.

  31. Scott

36 inch top is 199.99 at Dicks Sporting Goods currently when 20% off one item discount is applied. Good through 7/16

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

      Whoa! Great find! Thanks, Scott!

  32. Pinky

I want one of these for inside! Anyone know if they sell stove tops like this? Not just those little plug in pancake griddles those puppies are not the same. In college I worked in our school’s cafe and made the best cheesesteaks on something similar to this. FYI to get the top shiny poor Sprite on it after you are done cleaning. The soda really cleans of the leftover grime.

    • Pinky

      I mean pour, lol!
