Got mosquitos? Consider grabbing Thermacell Patio Shield mosquito repellent!

We went on a trip to visit family in the Midwest last summer and there were a TON of mosquitos outside, which is a bummer if you are prone to mosquito bites like me. My sister-in-law had this nifty Thermacell mosquito repellent device out on her outdoor patio table. I was so impressed with how well it worked, I too now have one in my own backyard to keep mosquitos at bay! 🙌

I hadn’t used one of these and was so curious to find out more about how they work. It was nice to sit outside and make s’mores and enjoy family time without being eaten alive! 😂

Even better, we found a deal on it! Right now, Amazon has a Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller with 12hr of Refills for just $17.98 (regularly starting at $19.99)!

For anyone curious, this post is not sponsored! I knew the moment I tried this handy outdoor gadget out that I needed to share it with all of you, especially if you’ve been suffering through buggy days and nights outdoors this summer. ☀️

How does the Thermacell mosquito repellent work?

The battery-powered device creates heat with a 12-hour fuel cartridge that warms up and “activates” the small mosquito-repellent mat on the top. It repels without smoke, flames, or citronella, and creates a 15-foot zone of protection against mosquitos.

The unscented repellent mats (3 included) last up to 4 hours each and change color when it’s time to refill. There is no mess, no DEET, no spray, and no on-skin chemicals. The active ingredient is based on naturally occurring repellents found in plants.

The setup on the Thermacell is very easy if you follow the simple directions included.

The butane fuel source at the bottom of the device easily screws in, and the blue repellent mat slides in at the top. You can purchase more of the mosquito repellent scent-free replacements and fuel cartridges separately when the initial few that come with the unit run out.

refills for the mosquito repellent

Thermacell is perfect for mosquito protection on patios, decks, pools, porches, camping, and is an easy way to stay outside and enjoy yourself while avoiding the itchy mosquito bites that can happen, especially during the summer months!

mosquito bites on a child

Mosquito bites are the WORST, aren’t they?!

The Thermacell mosquito repeller can be such a lifesaver if you or your kids welt up with big skin reactions to mosquitos! My daughter’s bites have also always been so bad and painful/itchy. Above is a photo of what one softball practice without any protection can do!

I try to be proactive and prepared by wearing mosquito repellent when we are active outdoors and the Thermacell is another smart way to protect your family from mosquitos while sitting outside.

Thermacell Patio Shield Repeller has over 22,000 reviews on Amazon with tons of happy customers! Check out some of these reviews:

“This thing works MIRACLES y’all! Freaking MIRACLES. I let it warm up for a good 5-10 min and it works amazingly. I have received ZERO bites within that 10-15 foot radius, which is perfect for our deck.”

“This actually does keep mosquitos and usually flies away from us while we sit on our porch! You have to keep replacing the blue discs and the cartridges but that is totally worth it for us to sit on our porch in peace! We place it on the floor by our feet so it wafts up and protects our legs too. There is no smell that I can detect, and we are just so excited that it really works!!!”

“Excellent product that does precisely what it says it does. We have a large patio area and use one of these on each side of the patio. We live in South Florida and, even at the height of mosquito season, we can spend an evening on the patio with these and not get a single bite. These are excellent!

Pros of using Thermacell Mosquito Repellent:

  • no sound, no smell, and no noise
  • effective when you are sitting within the 15-foot shield
  • battery operated (no charging or cords)
  • natural DEET-free repellent

Cons of using Thermacell Mosquito Repellent:

I agree. I have this and it works wonders.

  2. Nicole

Very mixed reviews on this. Seems people either love it or hate it. Although one review I saw showed pictures of flies near it and complained that it didn’t keep the “mosquitos” away 😂 can never trust crazy reviews. I’m going to give it a try! Hope it works!

  3. Teah

I have a different model and I love it. It keeps Oregon mosquitos away. The only issue I have is the refills can be spendy, but I do see them on clearance often and usually stock up when I do.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

oh nice! Thanks for sharing Teah!

    • Mama Miller

Can you tell us what model you did get? Thanks

  4. Olivia

I bought one at the beginning of summer and I think it’s worth the pricey refills! Mosquitoes LOVE me and I get huge welts from mosquito bites. But this summer I have only gotten one little bite. That’s way bette than the 5-10 each night I was getting before. So totally worth it in my book! Just make sure your kids “forget” and leave it on all night….darn kids.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Ha yes that is a great point! I almost did that myself 😂 Thanks for your input Olivia 🙌

  5. Mollie

Mosquitoes are bad in Alabama. We have a company that sprays once a month and we decided to let them go after the contract expires because they want go away. I am going to try this and not worry about the price if it works.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes! Hope it works as well for you Mollie!

  6. luna

We had good luck with this product. so many friends have asked me the details for this one.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thanks for sharing Luna!

    • Betst

Thank you! If it sounds to good to be true it probably is. 🙂

  7. Carrie

I got this and took it camping with us. I have to agree with those who say it does work. I will note that it does not work if it it windy or even really breezy. It works best if you keep it in one place and stay within 15 feet of it.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks Carrie for sharing your experience!

  8. Kimberlyn

Don’t use around food. When I saw your original post on this I looked at it since we have more mosquitos with the Az monsoon season this year. It says to move it away from the table where there is food due to the chemical it puts out. No thanks!!

    • Sarah

Thanks for posting. I’m in AZ too and was looking for something to help with the mosquitos during monsoon season as well. They’re awful where I’m at.

      • Kim

We buy the Cutter or other bug spray that hooks up to the hose to spray all over our rocks and plants in the backyard. We have a pool and the spray really helps with flies and mosquitos. 🙂

  9. mara138

Got these last year we love them! I can’t be the person who sits next to it because it irritates my throat. But it is great sitting out back in the evening with no mosquitos!

  10. Vicky

I was checking if this product could be used to help keep mosquitoes away from our outdoor commnuinty cats but this can be fatal. Please keep cats away from this. Fatal to bees as posted above and fish – in case anyone has ponds.

  11. Mona

I got it last year and, it works really good. Just remember, you have to turn it on 20 or so minutes before you go out. I’m a mosquito magnet and, couldn’t believe, I wasn’t bitten once. Also stay in the perimeter, that helps.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thanks for sharing Mona!

  12. kim

Can you use the same mat more than once if you don’t use it for 4 hours? Or is it once and done? Thanks

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

I continue with the same one.

  13. Del

I bought this exact thing (same color too!) and it didn’t work at all for my South Florida mosquitos. I had it on the table directly in front of me and I was still getting bitten by mosquitos. Also note that it says to keep away from food. Funny, I would most need it while dining outdoors.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Oh darn! Sorry to hear that it didn’t work well for you. Thanks for the feedback, Del. 💗

  14. Aws

Does anyone know if you can take the used pads and put essential oils on them and reuse like that? Just curious if something like that would work with this. Thanks.

  15. CB

Purchased this last year– did not work at all. Huge money waste. Reluctantly replaced with dynatrap and it actually works.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

So sorry to hear that, CB! Thanks for the honest feedback. 💕

  16. jllo216

Works great in Oregon But needs a breeze…no breeze you probably going to get bites all over.

  17. shey59

Weird but I have one on my back deck that works great so I purchased another color same style for my front deck and it doesn’t do as well.

  18. Ginger T

There is no instant where any outdoor area will not be a little windy. It didn’t work for me, even with the little to no breeze kind of nights.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Darn. Thanks for sharing your experience Ginger.

  19. Rischelle

Take the plunge and splurge on this. I’ve been hesitating for over a year. Finally decided to give it a try the last time H2S posted about it, as I have not been able to enjoy my patio for years because the mosquitos are so bad. This thing works! My husband, the forever skeptic, used it without my knowledge so that he and his dad could sit on the patio and they were both impressed. No bites. We live in NW PA and our backyard has an open area surrounded by a lot of trees. We get a nice breeze back there. Still, this worked! I plan on buying the refills soon! Side note – I also purchased the No Bite Me cream advertised on here and it’s worked every time I’ve worn it. Give one of them (or both) a try!

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for sharing your honest and helpful feedback, Rischelle! I have had my Thermacell for years and love it so much, I’ve bought a few. I even take it to outdoor events! So happy to hear you can enjoy the your patio area more now! 🥰

We’ve had a bad year with biting gnats! (Mosquito bites itch for a few days and usually bite on your exposed limbs; gnat bites itch for a couple of weeks, and get you where you didn’t think they could!)

I wanted to order this, even had it on my “wish list”, but when I saw it was harmful to bee’s, that was a deal breaker.

What I did find that helps, if you are sitting outside in one area like your patio, is to set up a fan blowing at you. Mosquitos, gnats, and some flies aren’t strong enough to fly against the breeze. We had company over for dinner on our patio with a fan blowing at us – none of us got bites!

  21. Stephanie Rushing

I am holding out hope on this mosquito repellant. We have a trip coming up to the Mexico and are hoping this will at least keep them at bay while we sit on our balcony.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Hoping it works for you, Stephanie! I own one of these and it does seem to help! I would also recommend having a few extra refills on hand, and starting it up outside about 10-15 minutes prior to being out there. Have a great trip! 🤗❤️
