Why are they called funeral potatoes?
Funeral potatoes are often associated with funerals and potluck-style gatherings as traditional comfort food. It’s an easy and affordable dish to serve a crowd at a reception or celebration. According to Dictionary.com, “The name comes from the Mormon practice of serving the dish at receptions after funerals, especially those planned by a woman’s group called the Relief Society.”

I appreciate that anyone can throw these cheesy potatoes together and have them come out consistently delicious each time. I specifically love to serve this alongside ham or as a brunch side dish with bacon and eggs. It’s comforting and so darn GOOD! This casserole is also a perfect Thanksgiving side dish to pair with turkey. You can easily double the ingredients for larger crowds.

Cheesy tater tot casserole is another comfort food to consider!
We always called these Holiday Potatoes. And they are soooo good! : )
Oh thanks for sharing!
If you use condensed cheese soup instead of cream of chicken, it will be vegetarian. Since one of my daughters is a vegetarian, we always make it like this! (It’s still not vegan, of course!)
Oh that is a great point! Thanks for sharing Ann!
Many cream of ___ soups are vegetarian. Cream of mushroom soup is vegetarian.

Thanks so much.
Youβre very welcome! Enjoy!
Our family just calls it cheesy potatoes but they are not made like this. We use a block of cream cheese and I use 2 soups, 1 chicken and 1 mushroom. I also blend those together. We don’t use parmesan just cheddar and use diced frozen potatoes.
Oh I will have to try that combo! Thanks for sharing your version!
We just call this hash brown casserole. π€£
We put green onions in these, so good! I’m from Utah and yes they still serve this after funerals.
That sounds yummy, FANFAVE! π€ I love adding green onions to dishes like these too! Such great flavor and added color! π
Yep! Will always be funeral potatoes to me.
These potatoes seem to be a little mushy. I usually put extra potatoes and decrease the sour cream. We don’t eat them often but they are easy to make… but not healthy at all π¬
Thanks for sharing about some of the swaps you make for this dish, alaskajoy79! π
