Easy Stained Glass Sidewalk Chalk Art Using Painter’s Tape

At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, we saw a trend going around using painter’s tape and sidewalk chalk to create some beautiful outdoor masterpieces! Even though we may be spending less time at home these days, we’ll always be looking for ways to enjoy some family time outdoors, and this activity remains a Hip2Save favorite!
Make beautiful stained glass sidewalk chalk art right outside your home…
Although there are so many fun DIY crafts and activities you can do with your kiddos, we love the simplicity of this one. This sidewalk chalk art project is really easy to set up, it only requires two different materials, and it will leave your child with a totally unique and photo-worthy result every time.
All you need for this fun activity is some sidewalk chalk, painter’s tape, somewhere to color (like a sidewalk or driveway), and your imagination! To get started, just use the painter’s tape to tape off sections of your coloring surface. The tape can be placed at completely random angles – there’s no wrong way to do it!
Once you’ve placed your tape where you want it, color away!
Hip tip for recreating this easy stained glass sidewalk chalk art: After coloring in a section of your artwork, try using your hand or an old sock to smooth it out. This is a great way to blend different colors and spread the chalk dust into the corners and other spots you might have missed.
Once you have all the sections of your artwork colored in, remove the tape, stand back, and admire your colorful creation!

Sidewalk chalk is like toilet paper right now! So hard to find!
Cleaning up the garage, we came upon a lot of 100 chalk that we bought last year at Sam’s club. We were so excited.
If you have a reason to grab some essential stuff at Target anytime soon maybe check there, Clare! I was just there the other day when I was getting groceries and they had a bunch of chalk. Make your own chalk paint. Mix equal parts warm water with corn starch. Stir until no lumps. Add your choice of food coloring, and them “paint” away. We put ours into several paper cups and made multiple colors. I carried them to the driveway in a muffin tin to keep them from spilling.
Forgot to mention that the colors are brighter once it dries. And food die can be found in the Easter aisle right now.

You can also do this on glass doors or windows with washable paint with a little dish soap mixed in. More clean up but it looks really cool! A friend did it on his front door with his daughter and he said she had a blast!

Yes! We did this and it was tons of fun. I know friends have used -acrylic paint on glass (first putting on the painters tape). We used Crayola washable poster paint, which I poured a couple tablespoons in a muffin tin and added a drop of Dawn and a dribble of water in each color in the tin…then painted it on the window! So easy and my kids loved it!
We did our driveway and it turned out awesome!

Since our community can’t have a traditional Easter Egg Hunt, we’re having a social distancing one where neighbors are coloring Easter eggs on their sidewalks and driveways for others to “find” on walks. My kids and I had a great time coloring some the other evening. The rain washed them away so now we’ll get to do it again.
We have been doing this all week long! First we could only find like 6 sticks of chalk. I went on line to order some and OMG it’s crazy, they are all out and Amazon’s prices are ridiculous. For a bucket of chalk, that usually costs $5, they are charging $25…really!?!? I knew we had more in the garage so we decided to look for them and in the process we cleaned the garage also. Luckily we found a big tub full of chalks (60+ sticks). We made a sign for our trash collector this morning and we have been doing stain glass stencils all over our drive way. But honestly this is a great way to get the kids outside and even my oldest one who is 14 is enjoying this.
I remember doing this activity when i was little in art class, It was so fun!
