How else can you minimize your shopping this year?

If you’ve never heard of the 4 Gift Rule, this may be the year to start! It’s a genius way to simplify your shopping list, but still have every gift be meaningful and intentional. Bye, bye, frivolous shopping!

We also favor experiences over gifts. While tangible items are always nice, the memories from something you can do could never be replaced and will last a lifetime.

I have the hardest time finding gifts for teenagers and preteens. I have 10 grandchildren and really need to stay on a budget. Any help with this would be super!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

I totally understand.❀️ I have two teens and their grandparents and I find it to be a struggle too! Thanks for the request. I’ll be sure to pass this along to the team. πŸ™Œ In the meantime you can browse teen boy gifts here and gifts for teens here! We’ll have one for girls soon! πŸ’•πŸ€—

One year my grandmother bought inexpensive teddy bears and made them bowties out of $20 bills. They were so cute, i will never forget it. I also look for stuffed animals after valentine’s day and easter, I know it’s too late for this year.

      • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

What a cute gift idea, Kim! Thanks for sharing with us! πŸ€—β€οΈ

      • Judy

I love this idea! I know I’m on the brink of getting them gift cards, but that’s so boring for me. I’m agonizing over the fact that I can’t buy toys! I’m thinking I may the oldest person who still gets a thrill out of toys πŸ™

      • VickiM

Love this idea! You just solved my problem for next year. I have 11 nephews and nieces, and I try to do about $20 each.

        • Kim

Vicki, I am glad you love the idea….it was also fun being on the receiving end!!!

    • Diane

I find Bath and Body Works is popular with that age group. Both my husband and I have the bath and Body works app. So I can usually pick up 2 freebies every time BBW has a new coupon. I also buy discounted BBW gift cards. You can redeem Discover card cash back for discounted gift cards. You can also purchase gift cards from stores like Kroger or Food City that give you points towards gas rewards. Kroger also put various gifts on sale.

I also check both Walgreens and CVS for coupons and sales on nail polish and lip gloss. I have had good luck with the $5.00 Revlon coupon purchasing the $5.49 nail polish. This is their online price so I have to order it for pickup to receive this price. If your grandchildren like fragrances that CVS carries you could sign up for their CVS cares pass. Their annual pass $48.00/year or the monthly pass for $5.00/month. You get $10.00 each month to spend so either a $5.00 or $6.00 discount each month. You can not combine months unless you sign up on the 31st of a month since not all months have 31 days.

i made my own old-school Christmas Club bank account. Its a savings account with an automated deposit (i.e. $10 per week or whatever) from my checking account. I don’t even notice the small amount missing from my checking and then in November, when I see great sales and want to buy holiday gifts, I know I can pay for it from my Christmas Club. I love using it to buy gift card deals that I can turn around and use for holiday presents.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

SO smart!πŸ™Œ Thanks for the heads up on how you’ve saved for Christmas through the year! πŸŽ‰πŸ’• That does sound super easy and helpful!

  7. Raquel

Love these great ideas, thank you! I have a spreadsheet in google docs to track who I buy for and what I get them. My problem is I’ll shop early and then I forget that I bought them something already (lol). I just add a tab to the spreadsheet every year. The trackers help a lot! Happy Shopping! πŸ™‚

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Aww, Love that idea! And so cool that you shop early! You’re welcome, Raquel! πŸ’•πŸ™Œ

  8. acgold

Thanks to Hip2Save I get all my shopping done extremely early for Chanukah and Christmas. I was done by April this year, even for the shelter. I keep track in my notes app on my phone. I even start to wrap over the summer. I love that we can enjoy the holidays with no pressure and take advantage of the sales you post from Oct.-Dec. to buy for donation to the shelter we support and treat ourselves. Thank you for all your hard work H2S team. You help us all year round to make people happy!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

That’s amazing! You’re SO very welcome! Thank YOU for the super sweet feedback and for sharing how you’ve been able to shop the deals early each year! πŸ’•πŸ™Œ

PS! We live in an apartment in NYC so space is limited. I am dying for a gift closet instead of a medium box under our bed! I would be able to plan years in advance! LOL!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Happy you’ve still been able to create your own gift closet under the bed! ❀️

  10. JW

Just got an email today from Bonne Maman jams that they have their advent calendars now in stock online. Know those have been a hit over the last few years. Makes a great gift! πŸŽ„

WOOHOO! Thanks so much for the heads up, JW! πŸŽ‰πŸ’—

You’ve always helped me with ideas for my grandkids. This year, I know one of my granddaughters is going to want skin care and beauty products. I’ve already started by buying makeup remover clothes from the QVC sale you posted. (She’s already confiscated the free bag of samples)

    • Trish (Hip Sidekick)

Happy to hear that our posts have helped with ideas for your Grandkids, Sandra! Hoping you’re able to score some great deals with us again this year! πŸ€—πŸ’•

I’ve used the Christmas gift list app for years now and I LOVE it!! I add ideas in throughout the year so I remember when I begin shopping, love being able to set a budget to stick to too! It’s great that it has an option to archive lists and read what you purchased for people in the past. Highly recommend.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

How cool! πŸ™Œ Thanks for the recommendation! Good to know it has been helpful through the years! β€οΈπŸ€—

  13. Pamela

Thanks for doing this early and I decided to do my small Christmas shopping early to save my time & save the trip since I will be working more hours from now on until January!

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

You’re welcome, Pamela! πŸ’— Very happy to hear how helpful this post is and that you’ve already knocked out some Christmas shopping! πŸŽ„

  14. Mary

I accumulate and cash in all my points from my credit cards (Amazon, Capital One, etc.) at the end of the year and buy gift cards and gifts with them between November and December. I usually have close to $2k worth.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Wow! What a great way to save through the year! πŸ€—β€οΈ Thanks for the tip on how you’ve been purchasing your gifts!

  15. ToriSC

If I don’t have my shopping done by Black Friday, I panic. I never stop shopping – using some basic ideas of things they like/can use every year.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Such a great idea to try and have your shopping done early! Hoping you find all that you need by that time this year! πŸ’–πŸ™Œ

I use Google Keep Notes app for all my lists. I use it for my weekly for grocery shopping, birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, stocking stuffers, Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinner Items, items I tend to always buy at Costco and Target, weekly dinners, returns, packages that are to be delivered (which is helpful during busy times, Ive only had it happen a couple times that a package was late, lost or become backordered and had temporarily forgotten and this helped remind me). I love how easy it is to use and navigate, there is different colors you can use for each list, you can name them all, shuffle them where they show up on your screen. As a grocery list I find it helpful as you can share any list you want with a family or friend with google, so my husband each week checked what items we need for groceries, then I go in and add anything we need based on the meals we are making and or kids lunches. We also label items with the grocery isle numbers so it helps us be productive and save time shopping. The list as you mark the items off that you get, it sends them to the bottom of your list, marked off and greyed out, but if you click on it, you can delete it permanently if you want or add it back in to the list for next week which saves so much time. The gift lists are super helpful too for the fact I can see at anytime (in bed, on vacation, at the store) what items I bought for everyone without having to go run and look. I make a individual list for everyone I shop for, with there name as the title, the amount of money budgeted to spend and often I write how much is left to spend on them. I also add items further down on my list for that person with any gift ideas they may have mentioned they liked so its all kept in one spot or can use that suggestion for next year. Hahahaha sorry that was really long, and hopefully made sense, but it really is such a great, handy app that has made our lives so much easier.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

No worries! Thanks so much for taking the time to share how you organize your lists with Google notes! πŸ’žπŸŽ‰πŸ€— Awesome that it has been so helpful!

  19. tewsj

Thanks! I feel so much more organized already!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Yay! That’s great to hear! You’re SO very welcome! πŸ€—πŸŽ‰

I only buy gifts for those like 21 and under and the 1 grandparent I have left that is still living….anyone else you can buy yourself whatever you like

  21. acgold

A great sale last year that I hope they repeat- Dicks Sporting Goods had the sherpa blanket throws and slipper socks buy1 get2 free. The throws are very soft, lots of patterns, ended up being about $5. each. Great gifts for guys, college students or teens, elderly. Not too heavy and just big enough. The socks are very cheap at this sale- great stocking stuffers or small gifts.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

That was a great sale, acgold! They had a similar offer for Buy 1, Get 1 Free that ended a few days ago here, but it looks like you’ve already seen that one from the comments! πŸ€—πŸ’— Good to know how giftable and affordable the items were. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for this sale to happen again! 🀞

  22. Laura

Finished everything today. My personal record. Much easier to pull this off without little kids. My college age kids are not very helpful with list ideas so I have to get creative. Nailed it this year and got them great stuff they didn’t know they needed!! Lol.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

YAY! Way to go, Laura! πŸŽ‰ Glad you could finish early, and enjoy the upcoming holiday season! πŸ₯°πŸ¦ƒπŸŽ„
