Kentucky derby festival and thunder over Louisville are cancelled/postponed

    • annie

as of march 14, no officials have made a decision yet. it will come later this week. where do you get your info? I happen to have family in the horse business, and no such announcement has been made yet.

      • Jen

Annie, Stephanie is talking about the Kentucky derby Festival that has been postponed according to their website but the Kentucky derby will be determined later this coming week.

  2. Suzanne

I just received emails that Publix is closing their stores at 8pm and Harris Teeter is closing at 9pm.

  3. DSch

I was wondering about stores like this with all their phones sitting out and people touching them and now it is for real… It’s getting real, folks! Wash your hands, then wash them again. I just heard a PSA on the radio that said, “if you smoke, STOP!” as it is simply another contributing factor to complications. Not that I smoke, but just thought, really, must we tell people not to smoke. Uggg.. Okay, rant over. Hope everyone is well — and wash your hands!

    • Observant mom

Are you only washing your hands because this is “real”? You should have learned to wash your hands from when you were little.

      • huertac1

That’s kind of ridiculous. I wash my hands regularly but leaving the grocery store, putting bags of food away, it can be easy to wind up doing something else or touching your face before washing your hands.

        • Qgirlfriend

          Yes…that was a ridiculous question.

        • Observant mom

Well if it’s easy for you to forget to wash your hands then you need to get in that habit and quick. My mom taught me to always wash my hands when we got home from anywhere. Grocery store- unload bags, put everything away and wash my hands. Every single time. I have taught my kids that as well. It doesn’t matter what they want to do- when we get home it’s always “after we wash our hands let’s play XYZ” or “after we wash our hands can we have XYZ?” They got it down. *pats back* you’re welcome, society.

          • Chritina

Right now we need to take this 1 step further to protect the most vulnerable people in our lives. You get in your car from the grocery store or where ever, immediately use hand sanitizer or lysol wipe to wipe down your hands before you touch your steering wheel. If we do this every time, we should be able to drastically cut down on the chances of us bringing it home with us.

      • Lisa

Observant mom, boy, you must be living in a bubble! I’d like to join you but I’m in reality here. The health officials have always said to wash your hands (commonsensical). They simply urged those to wash, wash, and wash them again. Kind of different than simply “washing your hands.” You live in that bubble though.

      • Charlotte

What happened to you that has made you so callous? The way you treat others is a reflection of how you feel about yourself. Try to practice patience and kindness, with yourself and others. This is a great platform for us to learn from others. No one deserves to be insulted just for posting.

    • dylanfan

You should be sanitizing your phone, watch, etc every day with a Clorox/Lysol wipe.

      • lisa

Yes I thought about that too

      • shop4mybabies

i have always done this to my phone, people gross me out taking their phones in the potty and never cleaning them. texting on them with dirty fingers all day, talking on them with stinky breath

        • Beth

Haha I love that! Talking on them With stinky breath 🙂 thanks for the smile.

  4. stacycovitz

It’s very surreal looking at this list! Stay healthy and think of the big picture and future and we will get through it!❤️

    • Observant mom

I agree! It can seem like a bit of a struggle, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

  5. GTgrad

I don’t think the majority of Chick-fil-A stores are going to drive-thru only right now. A few are, but the letter didn’t state that and most of them are still open.

    • Elizabeth

I’m in the metro Atlanta area and the plan around here is Monday (3/16) they’ll all (Atlanta area at least….I don’t know about other areas) will be drive thru only

    • Amy

They already are in the Charleston area.

  6. lisa

Please also consider when ordering items online that to get them delivered warehouse people have to work and the. Delivery drivers ups, FedEx, usps. Have to work too. Just be mindful, only order necessary items

    • Katie

I don’t know but I could see how people might be glad for work. I have already started hearing about layoffs at several different companies. Will they all have jobs if all stop ordering? I don’t know what is best.

      • Lori

Yes they are glad to be working the problem is that with everyone ordering so much more online the drivers have nearly twice the deliveries as usual. My son is working 12+ hr days, 6 days wk. These drivers are really getting rundown.

        • Observant mom

UPS, FedEx and the like can hire part-timers just like they do around Christmas time. It’s not anything out of this world.if your son doesn’t like his hours then maybe he should quit. We all choose where we work and know there are situations in which we are run ragged. In taking the job, he’s agreed to those conditions. I am sure there are plenty of people that would be willing to take your son’s spot. Let’s be thankful he has a job and there is a demand for his job in this crisis 🙏

          • Zombiesattack

Observant mom… maybe you shouldn’t be so rude. She didnt say anything about her son not liking his hours. Not very “observant” are you. You think that maybe ups has sick people or not enough people to handle this “unexpected” event? Sure, let’s call it Christmas and hire PT people.
You think they had time to hire people for this or the time now? Takes time to hire and train.
This is an unexpected situation so how was anyone to know that they might have to work longer hours. Would you tell the doctors that are helping people that if they dont like their hours they should quit too? You better use some of your hoarded toilet paper and wipe your mouth cuz all I hear you spouting is 💩

  7. Jess

Why are grocery stores closing earlier? Extra time to clean? Does the virus spread easier after dark?

    • Alex

I’m going to assume to give employees proper time AND space to restock The shelves- could you imagine trying to stock some toilet paper right now? Or canned food? People can get crazy and they could get hurt.

      • hip2trade

I have a relative that stocks shelves at Walmart and he said they were ripping the T.p out of his hands. 🙄

    • eileenmccartybranham

Yes more time to clean. A produce worker at Publix told us that they had record breaking sales Thurs only to set a new record Friday.

Yes, cleaning protocols are strict. In my area all the staff are at the checkouts and no one is available to do anything but checkout. They have to clean and stock some time. Also staff are sick. Doing more with fewer people. Regular flu is raging too.

    • C Thornsbury

      😂😂😂

    • aroaden83

To give employees time to restock because people are unnecessarily and selfishly clearing the shelves.

    • Heather

They are so busy during the day with the panic and stuff is flying off the shelves. They are closing early to use the timr.to sanitize and restock.

    • Debby Jensen

If Wal Mart changed their hours so their employees could re-stock, it certainly didn’t help at the one I just came from. Paper goods were completely gone as was dry milk, flour, most cans goods and the list goes on . When did people get there to binge buy? Some people need these items

  8. Tracy

Carowinds is closed until April 3rd. My daughter had a school fieldtrip on March 28th that was cancelled due to this horrible Coronavirus. They are hoping to get refunds but I’m sure a lot of people are getting refunds too.

  9. jb

Carnival Cruises has also been canceled.

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks, jb. I just added that!

  10. Ashley

This has gotten SO out of hand. Ugh.

    • Kg

I know. Why are people so worried about getting a potentially deadly virus?

      • DSch

Kg, it’s actually not deadly unless you are in a high risk category (elderly, 60 or older, or are otherwise autoimmune compromised, or smoke).

        • Kg

Yes. Exactly. And a healthy person that contracts it can pass it on to those that are at risk. I’d rather be safe than infect someone with say, diabetes or a heart condition.

        • Rebecca

While most deaths are in the high-risk categories, just like the regular flu, for whatever reason sometimes younger, generally healthy people die too.

          • Jen

In addition to the elders and those chronically ill, smokers and obesity both can also put you at danger should you become infected. Most men in China smoke, the death rate for men to women is dramatically higher as a result. So, they are saying the concern in the US as it runs ramped is because of the obesity rate here. This is a really good podcast that takes the politics out of the discussion. https://youtu.be/E3URhJx0NSw

        • Ginger Veith

Except it’s not. 20 and 30 year olds are on ventilators in Washington. #Socialdistancing.

          • J

That’s not actually true. My husband works in the ICU, and they’ve been being briefed and trained from Seattle, and there have been deaths of patients in their 20s, with no underlying condition.

          • J

Sorry Ginger, I meant to add to your reply and those above to the person who doesn’t think we area all at risk.

        • shop4mybabies

that is completely false at this point, there are healthy no prior health condition people in critical condition including an ER doctor in his 40’s in my state of Washington. healthy people are at risk, and their loved ones who aren’t healthy are at greater risk

      • Rebecca Ferraioli

I read an awesome article that completely changed my mind. It’s not about the fear of getting it, it’s the fact that if everyone who gets it happens at the very same time, it will end up overwhelming our healthcare system. If that happens, more people will die because they can’t all be treated and hospitalized .s Staff will have to choose who to help based on who has a greater need. This can mean a 50 year old gets that lifesaver ventilator and the 80 year old doesn’t because there just aren’t enough available. This self isolation tactic is done (and proven) to slow down the exposure rates so more people can get treatment and live.

        • Kg

          👆🏼thank you.

        • xoxo

Yes, Rebecca you are exactly right. I am more worried about when cases will eventually spike and there won’t be enough hospital beds. Doctors in Italy have reported having to make difficult decisions over which patient to treat because they are so overwhelmed and there aren’t enough supplies. We have the same supply issue. It’s also easy to say “don’t worry about getting it; you’ll be fine” but how many people do you know that have heart disease, diabetes, lung disease, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, cancer, etc. (all considered high risk). It’s not just a “old people” disease. It’s ALL who should be worried. Especially when even healthy young athletes like a NBA player are getting it.

        • Andrea Semrau

That is exactly what what we are trying to avoid. Our hospitals are unable to care for the potential onslaught of Covid-29 patients…look at Italy. We’re two weeks behind them and will suffer the same fate if drastic measures are not taken. Everyone needs to quit being selfish and think about others.

          • Andrea Semrau

            Covid-19

        • shop4mybabiess

they have already made the tough decision in Italy, where they are completely overwhelmed, that folks over 80 will not receive critical care because they can’t provide it to everyone. imagine having to decide that the elderly just have to die and you can’t help them. nothing has me more angry right now than all the folks making it about politics and saying it’s out of control. we are trying to save lives here folks, maybe yours, maybe grandmas, but lives

    • Ashley

Has it though? People are actually firing from it. We’ve gotten so comfy that we forget about the epidemics. And I would rather see people that are well informed and aware of the fact that we are not above these, and with how far spread it’s becoming, how would taking precautions for a pandemic be getting out of hand?

      • Ashley

        Dying* not firing

    • Observant mom

Ashley, feel free to be out and about. Don’t forget to touch your face, eyes, and mouth often! Ignorance truly is bliss.

      • Lisa

Yes, Observant mom, and you appear to be a living, breaking, walking example of this. Nice.

Texas HEB in cities like Houston and College Station have store hours 8am-8pm to allow time to restock emptied out shelves

    • Shoppingfan

That’s right Jeff. I work for H-E-B and it’s now ALL of our stores. We are getting extra shipments but need time to clean & restock. We are normally open 6a-12m but that’s not enough. Anyone feeling ill CANNOT come to work & if you traveled you must stay away for 14 days & then get checked by a company provider before returning. This is real!

    • Rebecca

Posts asks for any more national closures…please don’t keep posting school closures, as it obviously varies by state & ppl who live there (and are actually affected) already know.

      • M

Wow….. let’s all stay kind. Please.

        • dylanfan

I didn’t see anything rude about it.

        • kidsallgone

Wasn’t rude at all. She even said “please.”

    • Jen

All k-12 in Michigan as well.

    • Joni

Louisiana schools are closed until April 13!

  16. Aw

Great wolf lodge and Kalahari indoor water parks are closing too now.

  17. JRC

I’m 65 and a cancer survivor. Please take time to google Michael Osterholm, an expert in infectious diseases.

In a recent interview: BERGEN: So, if in a regular year in the US, the case fatality rate of influenza is 0.1%, you’re saying that COVID-19 will be higher?

OSTERHOLM: Twenty to 30 times higher. It could easily be that. We just don’t know yet and it could go down based on what we learn.

    • jimk

So he knows nothing? Sounds like most “”experts” lol

      • xoxo

“Experts” spend their entire careers studying these things. Maybe we should listen. He’s saying they don’t know just how high yet because it hasn’t played out yet. It’s a new virus that they know has a much higher mortality rate than the regular flu.

      • JRC

Jimk, I’m sorry you feel that he’s not knowledgeable in this crisis situation. It is a crisis.

    • snowflakelaia

There is no treatment for it. They cannot send you home with some flu medicine to lower the symptoms, and make you feel better. Your body has not been vaccinated, and hasn’t build resistance to this type of virus.

  18. Sarah

ALL HEB grocery stores are 8am to 8pm

  19. Lynn

I would also be mindful of what you are using to clean/sanitize items/areas. I saw some people at the store buying harsh chemicals to use to sanitize areas that can be harmful if touched or not cleaned thoroughly. I literally saw someone get a bottle of ammonia cleaner and said she would clean her store with it. YIKES

    • Emily

Sorry if I am naive, but what is wrong with cleaning with ammonia? I use ammonia based cleaners (ie windex) in my house a lot. I use other “harsh” chemicals too without problems. I just don’t mix them together or anything.

  20. NOW

Soma new hours starting Sunday 12 PM- 6PM

  21. queen62

Casinos are closed, most shows are cancelled Jurassic Park. Please be mindful of the buffet style meals. Those utensils are touched all day by hands that were in places that we don’t know. This is an eye opener for most. Stay healthy and safe to all.

  22. Gayla

Silver Dollar City amusement park has also closed until at least the end of March.

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Thank you, Gayla! I added that.

  23. mrsm

Zoo Atlanta is closed until the end of the month.

  24. Jen

Kindness Matters!!! Just throwing it out there. This is such an awesome app, would hate for some to ruin it. Times like this is when people need to lean on each other, including social media for positive support! Stay well and healthy friends!!

    • Qgirlfriend

      Well said, Jen! 👍

    • jenkay0615

I agree with the you, Jen -maybe it’s the name😉- kindness matters. I love this app and it’s creators/information and supporting community. This IS serious, we need each other and should support one another. Misinformation and nasty comments are NOT necessary. Stay kind and WASH YOUR HANDS!

    • J

Agreed! Couldn’t have said it better myself. Check on your neighbors & especially the disabled & senior citizens who are most vulnerable to catching this virus & shouldn’t be going out.

  25. mrsm

Stone Mountain park’s attractions are closed through the 27th.

  26. Deal Dawg

What frustrates me is Wal-Mart seems to have 3 lanes open, 18 employees pulling carts around filling online orders, and 2 employees (maybe) restocking. Right now, those shelves need to be constantly restocked. Hopefully, these new hours will allow more restocking.

    • Dana

The problem with Wal-Mart restocking shelves is that they are not getting in their trucks as often as they were. It is taking longer at the ports for merchandise to come in. The CDC is checking every single container that comes into US ports for possible Coronavirus contamination.

    • ella

In many cases, they just don’t have the products to restock. This has never been a time of year where there are particularly high demands for the types of products that are flying off the shelves, so the stores only have enough in stock for their typical sales this time of year. It takes time for them to get more stock in.

    • rosannerodriguez

My nephew works at Sam’s Club, and several friends work at Walmart. They can’t restock because the stores are not receiving adequate stock, Deal Dawg…and they’re working on filling online orders because they’re getting more of those than in-store customers.

  27. emack3608

These measures are to protect everyone. Im 36 years old & healthy as can be. No chronic health conditions or take any medications. In January I ended up on a ventilator for 9 days in the ICU & in the hospital for 13 days total after contracting Influenza B & I had my flu shot. I’m still recovering my strength. Everyone is at risk for complications.

    • Beth P

Wow, that’s crazy. Take care of yourself, especially now. Good luck to us all.

    • jenkay0615

Good luck with the remainder of your recovery! Sending positive vibes your way. Stay healthy. Wash your hands. 💗

    • J

So glad you’re improving. Thank you for sharing your story as some may think no illness can hit them just because they’re healthy. We need to take all the precautions to stay safe & take our health & the health of others seriously. If anyone is sick, please stay home.

    • akajulz

I had two healthy friends less than 40 years old who died from pneumonia in the last decade. Both started out having the flu that progressed to lung infections and pneumonia. Sometimes people don’t get medical health soon enough, but both of my friends did go to the hospital and they died within a few days. I have been hospitalized twice with severe bronchitis and the second time I thought I was going to die until they finally admitted me. I was coughing so hard I could not catch my breath. The thought of contracting the Coronavirus terrifies.

  28. Jamie

All Anthropologie stores are closed for at least two weeks

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      Thanks for sharing!

  29. hip2trade

The doomsday preppers are probably feeling good about their stock supply right about now. Considering the huge rush on many everyday items.

    • Tonia Proudfoot-Klemetson

I think most of us find this to be a little surreal. It’s bizarre to think this is actually happening.

I’ve had to remind myself roughly 1587 times to try to not be short with others. Like it or not we’re all in the same boat. Being kind can help the mental health side of this deal.

Not to say I haven’t lost my crap a few times. I have and I more than likely will again.

I asked my grandma how she survived WWII and the depression.
“ We put one foot in front of the other. We were all in it together. That made it a little better”

      • AmyH

Yes THIS!! We’re all going to get a lil crazy being couped up at home. Kindness matters and it goes a long way. Never hurts for an extra reminder!

    • J

      Lol. Sad but so true.

  30. Lynn

WEGMANS will temporarily reduce hours open.

  31. Shelby

Trader Joe’s 9am to 7pm starting Monday, no end date as of yet.

My child works at a Converse store in an outlet mall. They were told that they will be closed for two weeks but employees will continue to be payed. Converse is owned by Nike so I assume they are doing something similar but can’t say for sure.

My family can finally stop making fun of my stockpile in the basement. NOW you want my stuff because I have cleaning supplies and toilet paper?! You are lucky I like you, family, and do share. Couponing has saved me from overspending at this time. So thank you H2S!!!

    • Momma of 7

You’ve got to admit this is NOT a common situation. While it is nice that your stockpile is saving the day for you and your family, I have questions. I have 7 kids and struggle with doubts of how much to keep in stock of all essentials(food). I hit up sales(say no to regular price!) and will buy double, maybe triple or quadruple of what I would normally buy, but at some point it becomes too much. Storage is not the problem. I don’t like to buy(stockpile or hoard) food that will go bad before we can get to it. I know canned goods and other things have a long shelf life, but if I can’t get to it before it goes bad then did I really get a good deal? I know I could give it away as a kind gesture, but then I’m essentially buying stuff to give away and when it comes to food I don’t think I want to get into that habit of buying it for others. I just feel I already spend so much on food for my family, and any money spent on food for someone else will essentially be taking away money that could be used to give my kids an experience(vacation/staycation).

      • Liz

That is why you need to rotate your non perishable food.

      • J

Organize all your food by expiration dates, putting what expires first in the front, etc. Make a note if need be of what items will expire soon with dates, so nothing gets wasted.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re SO very welcome! 💕🙌

  34. Aleshia

United Market Street will only be open from 6am-11pm

  35. Luna

I just got an email that lush is also closing from March 16-29.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      Thanks, Luna!

  36. Sharon

I wonder if the time off from school will have to be made up later in the year by taking away Easter break or going longer in the summer? Or will they waive the mandatory number of attendance days?

    • desiree

At our school and schools around us or doing homework online while they are off and it’s mandatory due certain days of the week depending on the class….it will affect their grade in class if they do not get it done.

    • Tricia

I’m wondering that too. I’m going to guess they will waive it especially if schools start doing online courses or review online, then they will probably count that as school. I hope it doesn’t go into the summer.

    • CNY Momma

I know in NY they have waved the 180 day requirement for school. Most NY schools are closed through April 14th which is the end of our spring break. As teachers we did have to provide work for the students that would last them the 4 weeks. That work is either provided by paper or Google Classroom.

      • lisa

True I am a teacher in upstate ny too

    • Lynn

Does not have to be made up in Alabama.

    • shop4mybabies

it depends on the state, and even down to the district, some districts in WA state have the funds to online school and keep kids up with work, some do not, including mine. Our governor has said we will not make up the days past June 19th…they are working hard to make sure all seniors get their grad requirements and all hungry kiddos get fed

  37. Meredith

I’m in Boston. Everyone is panicking. Schools are closed until April 6 across the state. In Boston, some schools are open for Breakfast and Lunch only as 75 percent of kids rely on the free breakfast and lunch daily. Schools outside the city are also open for lunch only. All restaurants in Boston are take out only. It’s really really bad.

    • J

Texas as well. The Governor told us “no to worry” & guess what, now the virus started spreading like crazy. Some restaurants still open, but most of changing to delivery or pick up only. The main chain grocery stores running out of all essentials. If you have any Cheesecake Factory certificates left for the free slice, use it asap before they too end up closing.

  38. Frugal Momma

My son works at our local Starbucks and came home this afternoon saying they are now closed until March 30th. I don’t know if this is nationwide or just stores in his division.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for sharing with us!

  39. Heather Cargill

Does anyone else think it’s weird that Apple is closing all stores EXCEPT for China?!!

    • Saving Amy

No. There are hardly any new outbreaks in China right now. They are on the other side of the worst.

    • J

Sad. Shows how many hungry Apple is.

    • Geo

Those stores are reopening after already being closed.

      • Geo

“Apple’s move follows similar steps it took in China in early February when it said it would temporarily shut down all its stores in mainland China through Feb. 9 because of the coronavirus. After that it took a while for stores to reopen. By Mar. 13, all of its mainland China stores had re-opened but with limited operating hours.”

  40. Saving Amy

REI closed retail stores through 3/27.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      Thanks for the heads up!

  41. Jeremy L

I wish the stock market would close. Can someone make this happen? 😂

    • nita

      Lol I second that Jeremy!

    • J

They keeping telling everyone not to worry about the virus or the market. Yet, anyone fixing to retire in the near future will have zero in their 401K. Please be kind & help those in need.

  42. Edy

    • J

Absolutely thank you HIP2SAVE. I’m not in a position where I can get out of the house during this time or much at all. Infinite thanks to everyone at HIP2SAVE for all the deals, now I have what I need to stay safe.

    • Queenjen87

My local dmv is taking phone numbers and you wait in your car until they call you. Then you come in and renew. Call your dmv and see if they’re offering a similar strategy.

      • Edy

Thank you for the suggestion , but we have been given a extension we don’t have to worry about renewing until they open there offices again – schools closed until April -And the day hab were my daughter attends they closed it until the end of March which I kept my daughter home since last week we are staying home – only working is my husband out on the field – daughters working from home – just went to HEB to get milk, orange juice , jello and some vegetables and some items since the 3 girls are home- and pick some items for my oldest daughter and my granddaughter there was a line police on site but it was fast in and out found everything I needed some limits on water but there was nothing and some shelf’s empty but they be restocking — keep safe

  43. Edy

I was bless by this older man that I took care of him for 10 years he left me some stock and he said this is so, I would always had something and not to worry and I’m that’s going down the tubes – I’m glad his not here to see this but, he was and is my blessing

    • terri

If everyone would stop worrying about it and just let the stock sit in six months it will be going up like a mad again

  44. aroaden83

If anyone is traveling through Kentucky… all of our restaurants are going to drive thru only so plan accordingly! We just lost our first COVID-19 victim. Prayers and well wishes for our nation.

    • lisa

      So is NY

  45. Laurie Villotta

I am going to guess our school year is over. We go to online learning wed am so the kids are still responsible for the homework and grades. Lots of family time which I love. Also a much needed break for my high schooler. Lots of walks, jumping trampoline and playing board games.

  46. Heather

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon (normally held in April) has also been postponed to October.

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

      Darn! Thanks, Heather!

  47. Emily

This stinks. I like to take myself shopping on my birthday, but at this rate nothing will be open.

    • SMH

Stinks?? Just keep your finger crossed so you can have your birthday next year!

      • Laure

Anyone that thinks they need to take themselves shopping on their birthday is going to have a hard time with adjusting.

      • J

Lol ain’t that the truth. Be considerate of others, keep yourself well, so that you can care for your parents & grandparents.
