I love an endlessly versatile beauty tool! 😍

A few years ago I was introduced to glass nail files and the idea of them totally blew my mind! I cannot believe I had been living my entire life without them once I started using mine!

They’re endlessly reusable, earth-friendly, save you money, sanitary, & extremely durable.

So if you’re just as intrigued as I once was by this beauty phenomenon, keep reading to find out more about this unique personal care must-have & where to buy the best ones!

A few years ago I was generously gifted a glass nail file. To be honest, I thought it was pretty boujee & unnecessary but once I started using it, I understood why my friends were raving about them!

Plus, they deliver in many more ways than your average beauty tool so I’m totally sold for life! 🙌

emery board and glass nail files with no and yes post it notes

When I moved last year, I lost my beloved glass nail file. Since then, I’ve easily gone through at least 5 or 6 traditional emery board ones!

The lack of frugalness was a great reminder of why I needed to buy another one ASAP!

I happened to spot some glass nail files for just a few bucks at my local farmers market so I scooped one up immediately and promised myself never to go back to wasteful nail files ever again!

Unlike traditional nail files, glass nail files (or crystal nail files) are made up of chemically treated and tempered glass which gives them an everlasting abrasive surface that’s permanently etched into the glass – meaning they’ll NEVER dull!

You’re old, dingy, overly gritty, & super flimsy nail files can’t even compete! 💅

They’re also very reasonable for your wallet, so although they tend to be slightly more expensive than a regular file, you’ll see the savings add up pretty quickly!

Here are some other amazing benefits I’ve noticed from glass nail files:

  • Better edge when filing down your nails
  • Overall healthier nails
  • Improves nail chipping & splitting
  • A smoother surface never dulls
  • Glass is non-porous so they’re able to be easily sanitized — soap, water, and a gentle brush (if needed) is a great way to clean them.
  • You can take your sanitized glass nail file with you to your favorite nail salon

I love using a glass file! I buy mine at Marshallโ€™s/TJ Maxx and they are usually unde $10 for a set.

    • Peaches

I’ve had one for my nails and one for my feet for several years now and love them.

      • Sara

Love hearing that you’ve been using yours for years, Peaches! I suspect mine will last for many years too as it works so wonderfully and still feels brand new!

    • Sara

So wonderful to hear! Thanks for sharing where you find yours, Sarah!

    • lk

      Do they carry them regularly?

      • Sarah

Yes I regularly see them there.

  2. Jackie

Around 8 years ago I was on vacation and we went to the crescent moon hotel in Arkansas. This is the most haunted hotel in the US. Itโ€™s in Eureka Springs and has many cute shops all around. I found there my first glass nail file and I still have it and love it โค๏ธ

    • Sara

That is so special, Jackie! Thank you so much for sharing!

  3. Evie202

Great until it falls on the floor! They also break easily in your purse. Emory boards all the way, for me.

    • Rebecca

Hmm, I’ve dropped mine several times, on tile floors, with no problems. They get shoved in my purse as well with no issues. Maybe it depends on the brand?

    • becki

i have had mine for a couple years, and have travelled with it many times in my suitcase and purse. i’ve never had mine break or chip or crack. it came in a little velvet sleeve that i use, and i don’t protect it further than that. it was an inexpensive one from Amazon.

    • Sara

I hope you’ll give them a try again, Evie202! I also have never had this experience, but nonetheless, I’m happy you’ve found something that works for you! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. TheQueenBee

I bought one in a hospital gift shop that has lasted about 3 years already. I bought one at tjmaxx that went smooth after a few months. Guess I’d call that a defect. Wish I could find a thinner one like the metal files.

    • Sara

Thanks for sharing that with us, TheQueenBee! My only concern with glass nail files being as thin as the metal ones are that they could easily break.

  5. Shelly

Haha Where have I been livingโ€ฆ under a rock This is the first time I saw a glass nail file ๐Ÿ™ˆ

    • Julia

      Me too…

    • wendyann

      Me too

    • Sara

Don’t feel bad at all! Until I was gifted my nail file I had never heard of them before either, but I’m so glad I know now! If you give them a try you’ll have to let me know what you think! ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Savvy Mom

Iโ€™ve had a glass nail file for about 7 years and love it! I do keep it in the case when not using it to make sure it stays safe.

    • Sara

Wonderful to know, Savvy Mom, thank you so much for sharing that with us! Seven years sure beats anything the emery board nail files could do! How great!

  7. Tracy

This is my #1 baby shower gift. I used it on my own daughter. No mittens needed ever, no face scratching and no scary clipping of their thin skin. Infant nails file away in seconds with zero damage to their skin.

    • Sara

What a great tip! Thanks for sharing that with us, Tracy! I actually used to bite my little’s nails off while they nursed, but your way sounds so much better. HAHA!

  8. Jane

Mine is a Nail Tek brand. I bought it at a beauty supply store (years ago) and I believe it was originally intended for acrylic nails. The clerk raved about how well they worked on natural nails and how they were guaranteed for life! I paid about $10 back then and a few weeks later I dropped it on the floor and it broke. I called the company and they sent me a new one for totally FREE! I wonder if they still sell them? Highly recommend this one.

    • Sara

WOW! That is so awesome, Jane! Thank you so much for sharing that with us!

  9. Sue

I use glass nail files too but I paid way too much for mine. It costed me 15.00 just for one what a deal these are.

    • Sara

If it’s lasted you for quite a while, I’d still say it was money well spent, Sue! Glad you love glass nail files too!

  10. shinepm

Just bought one at the Dollar Tree. Figured it was worth a try.
    image.png

    • Sara

Awesome! I hope it works out for you, shinepm! I actually didn’t know the Dollar Tree sold glass nail files. Cool!

  11. Mrs. Aman

Does it have the soft side and the rough side? Or no? I like both options..

    • Sara

It’s the same on both sides. I was like you and liked having the options of a rough side and a smooth side, but I quickly got used to the glass nail files. They still file quickly and are so much nicer on your nails. I hope this helps!

  12. D

Walmart has several with cases for under $5. An Equate one with case is $4.

    • Sara

That’s great to know! Thank you so much for sharing with us, D!

  13. Bunny

Several years ago Colin posted about all the things that were in her purse and a glass nail file was one of the items listed. Bought one back then and absolutely love it. Thanks for the reminder. And I love Tracy’s idea as this for a baby shower gift–how clever! ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Krista

Hi everyone! Glass nail files shred my nails. Maybe Iโ€™m doing it wrong? Is there a โ€œrightโ€ way to use these?

  15. Natalie

Ace hardware has them for $1.99 each!! Just bought one. Love it.
