What is VIPKID?
VIPKID provides an international learning experience to children in China between the ages of 4-12. The company is headquartered in Beijing and offers fully immersive one-on-one English language instruction provided online by qualified teachers. The curriculum is based on the U.S. Common Core State Standards and uses a flipped-classroom approach to foster creativity and critical thinking skills.
In addition to their paying students, VIPKID supports 300 low-income rural schools in China through their Rural Education Project. This program provides free English classes to students, helping to improve even more lives.
A few perks of working for VIPKID:
- Flexible Schedule
You can work from home or anywhere else that you want – no commuter traffic! You’ll be able to set your own schedule and work as few or as many hours as you’d like. (It’s recommended that qualified teachers be available for at least 7.5 hours of teaching time per week.)
This means you can go on vacation and work remotely or when you are at home, stay in your jammies!
- No lesson plans OR grading
VIPKID provides the lesson plans for you to choose from. They even communicate with parents so you don’t have to! This gives you time to focus on what you love – teaching kids! You just need a computer, passion, and skills for teaching.
- No education degree required
You don’t need a degree in education to be a VIPKID teacher! All you need is a bachelor’s degree in ANY field AND one school-year of traditional teaching experience or the equivalent in mentoring, tutoring, or alternative education.
- Earn up to $22/hour from home!
Qualified teachers will teach English to young students online and will make between $14-$22 per hour. Your minimum pay will be determined by your demo class performance and incentives by your monthly class participation and completion.
- No teaching HUGE classrooms

Working with VIPKID has been amazing. I love that I can teach early in the morning before my kids go to school. I have met so many wonderful families in China and have a fully booked schedule of regular students. These families take learning English seriously. They want teachers with a North American accent, so they can sound like a native English speaker. If you are not a morning person, don’t worry! You can teach evenings/ nights on the weekends, summers, and Chinese holidays!
I am also a teacher and have been with VIPKID for over 2 years and have taught about 2,000 classes. I absolutely love this job and hope to continue working there for a long time!
I have been with this company for a little over a year and am so grateful for the extra money I bring in to help support our family! I signed up after reading about it on hip2save. Please know that bookings (even for me) have been lower than normal. I’d love to help you if you are interested! 🥰Here’s my link https://m.vipkidteachers.com/mkt/landing/personal?referralToken=8ec84cdaaab615b7a1699302e19a7733&refereeId=30273522!
This is a legit opportunity, but be warned. Background checks are being held up because of shelter in place orders. You may be approved, but waiting for a while to be hired. (That’s the boat I’m in).
I have really enjoyed VIPkid so far. If you are wondering about real experiences, I’m happy to let you know mine. I’m even more sleep deprived than normal but having a paycheck while staying home with my kids has been nice.
They offer a referral bonus as well, so please consider using my link if you decide to sign up 🙂 https://m.vipkidteachers.com/mkt/landing/personal?referralToken=352a871335d9105a56a6ceec5bcaadfe&refereeId=40631676
Does everyone make $22/hr? What is the realistic pay?
I think $18-20 is more realistic. I have heard of some getting a higher starting rate, but I don’t think that is the norm.
I average out to about $20 an hour. There are a few factors that can change that up or down but I’d say $20 is the average for me.
It’s probably more realistic to think about $15 an hour… you get paid per class and then it depends on the incentives/“bonuses” you qualify for… they’ve recently changed the one entire system so I’m not sure how it works for new hires… for me, I started off with $7.50 per class but I get $1 for each class I’ve finished… and If I teach at least 30 class a month I get an extra 50 cents or if I teach at least 45 classes, I get an extra $1 instead of the 50 cents (so that’s an extra $2 a class for me which brings my pay to $19 an hour) but like I said, for new hires, they just changed it so those extra incentives are a little different. You will see lots of referral links on this post bc people get a bonus if you sign up through them (I think it’s $100) be forewarned, so many teachers are home now so they are opening up more availability so it will be a slow start if you sign up.. also, they are not hiring anyone from California.
Just curious. Why not California?
When you work for VIPKid, you are technically an “independent contractor.” This basically means that VIPKid is not required to give benefits to you. You have to file taxes as “self-employed” and pay self-employment tax. But in 2019, California changed their laws regarding independent contractors. I haven’t looked up the fine print, but from what I’ve heard, in California, you can only be considered an independent contractor if you are not apart of an established company. It made VIPKid illegal in California. So, with the way the company works, they are not allowed to hire Californian teachers. It’s too bad, really.
I’ve been teaching with them 4 years. I have 2 masters. My base is $11 per 25 min class. And I get $1 for participation per class. So yes I make 22 per hour. I make 26 an hour if they are short notice classes. My first year I made maybe 500 all year. Now I do it full time, after about 2 years. I was able to quit my day job. It takes time very feasible. They offer a minimum of 100 for referring. A lot of teachers just refer.
No $22 is not realistic. I’ve been with them 3 years now and it’s about $16/hr
What time do we have to work? I live in central time zone. Thanks
I am CST and work M-F 5:30-8:00 am. These are peak hours when most students in China are available for classes. You can set your own hours but the early mornings and weekend evenings are most popular with students.
I live in central time zone. The hours available to work are 7:30pm-8:00am. The really popular hours, the hours students aggressively book, are from 4:00am-7:00am.

Do you know why they’re not hiring anyone from California?
California has a recent law against independent contractors who aren’t paid benefits.
Another current VIPKID teacher here! I also serve as a coach and mentor within the company. I absolutely LOVE the flexibility this wonderful job gives me and my family. I am able to continue staying home with my two young kiddos while still contributing to our family’s finances. I actually make as much now as I did as a classroom teacher here in North Carolina! I would love to chat with anyone who may be interested in also pursuing this amazing opportunity! My email address is laurenmac10@gmail.com or find more information here https://t.vipkid.com.cn/activity/popup?refereeId=6783306&refersourceid=a01. Potential applicants who follow the process with a current teacher are more likely to be hired and I would love to help you through the process!
I’ve been with them for 2 years! I won’t leave my referral because others already have. Just wanted to say it’s an excellent company.
I have been working for them for over a year now. I received a .50 raise already. I make $21 an hour with the option of another $2 short notice booking. I enjoy this company because of the opportunity to make youre own schedule! This is my link if anyone has any questions!

My sister was looking for legitimate work from home options without a degree. Her kids have been all online school so she had to leave her job to be home with them. Does anyone happen to know of any or a site I might be able to forward to her? Really appreciate it!
Hi Amy! There are some other options over here – https://hip2save.com/category/tips/work-from-home-jobs/
Hope that helps!
Thanks I’ll pass it along to her!
You’re so welcome!
This would have been perfect for me and what I am looking for at the moment but unfortunately I live in CA.
I’m an actual ESOL teacher in the US public schools with a college degree and 5 years experience in the same job. A few years back I applied for VipKid and they said I “didn’t fit” what they were looking for, despite my highly effective ratings and experience as a classroom teacher. I think they want you to be extremely peppy, almost to the point of being cartoonish, and have a cheerleader persona the entire time you work, or they don’t want you! That was my experience at least. Oh well
Love VIPkid and the flexibility it offers! Thanks for using my referral link! https://m.vipkid.com/mkt/landing/personal?referralToken=f461821d88902581abcb4ed62afcacee&refereeId=7250683&channel_id=copy_link_m
