What is VIPKID?

VIPKID provides an international learning experience to children in China between the ages of 4-12. The company is headquartered in Beijing and offers fully immersive one-on-one English language instruction provided online by qualified teachers. The curriculum is based on the U.S. Common Core State Standards and uses a flipped-classroom approach to foster creativity and critical thinking skills.

In addition to their paying students, VIPKID supports 300 low-income rural schools in China through their Rural Education Project. This program provides free English classes to students, helping to improve even more lives.

A few perks of working for VIPKID:

  • Flexible Schedule

You can work from home or anywhere else that you want – no commuter traffic! You’ll be able to set your own schedule and work as few or as many hours as you’d like. (It’s recommended that qualified teachers be available for at least 7.5 hours of teaching time per week.)

This means you can go on vacation and work remotely or when you are at home, stay in your jammies!

  • No lesson plans OR grading

VIPKID provides the lesson plans for you to choose from. They even communicate with parents so you don’t have to! This gives you time to focus on what you love – teaching kids! You just need a computer, passion, and skills for teaching.

  • No education degree required

You don’t need a degree in education to be a VIPKID teacher! All you need is a bachelor’s degree in ANY field AND one school-year of traditional teaching experience or the equivalent in mentoring, tutoring, or alternative education.

  • Earn up to $22/hour from home!

Qualified teachers will teach English to young students online and will make between $14-$22 per hour. Your minimum pay will be determined by your demo class performance and incentives by your monthly class participation and completion.

  • No teaching HUGE classrooms
Do large classrooms intimidate you? No worries! All VIPKID classes are one-on-one to ensure they meet 100% of each student’s needs.

Check out what Hip2Save readers think…

Working with VIPKID has been amazing. I love that I can teach early in the morning before my kids go to school. I have met so many wonderful families in China and have a fully booked schedule of regular students. These families take learning English seriously. They want teachers with a North American accent, so they can sound like a native English speaker. If you are not a morning person, don’t worry! You can teach evenings/ nights on the weekends, summers, and Chinese holidays!

I am also a teacher and have been with VIPKID for over 2 years and have taught about 2,000 classes. I absolutely love this job, and hope to continue working there for a long time!

I have been working with VIPKID for one and a half years now. I started it on a whim and quickly fell in love with it! The kids are so cute and have so much respect for their teachers. I work full time and teach either before my kids wake up or after they go to sleep. It’s wonderful! I love that I set my own hours, and you can make up to $22 an hour!!!

I am in my third contract with VIPKID and I absolutely love it! I have over 100 regular students that bring joy to my mornings. You, too, can be a successful VIPKID teacher and enjoy making a difference in a child’s life while earning a little extra money!

    I am a college grad & a professional sales person & they haven’t accepted me. I tried 3 times.

    • Jacqui

They want over 1 year of experience with kids (babysitting, tutoring, homeschool, etc.) but won’t accept applications that list any less.

    • Whitney

Email me! I can give you some tips 🙂 – I currently work for them!

    • Natasha

I’m currently teaching on an adult platform with students who are in college, or who are needing a boost in their careers. I’ve looked at VIP Kid, but wondered if you really do just follow a lesson plan? I constantly get bombarded in my adult classes with requests to change it up, requests for proofreading and grading papers, requests for things that are not in the regular lesson etc.

Are the lesson plans actually set out with VIP Kid to where you only follow that? And do you need a ton of props? I realize it’s a Schedule C job and you can write those things off — but since I don’t already have kiddos, there aren’t any props around my house. I have siblings I could borrow from, hahaha. But I’d really enjoy knowing more about what the day to day is like. I am doing 20 hours per week with adult ESL, and sometimes 10-20 hours per week in Algebra & Algebra II with students, but there are times where It’s only 10 hours of each and I’d like to have another outlet.

      • CeCe

Natalie, yes, you do need props. You can print a TON of them online or cut out pictures from books/magazines you may have laying around! Tape/glue to a popsicle stick and voila! Most of my props are like this. Saves space and the only investment is the $1 bag of sticks! (I use HP Instant Ink.

Yes, you follow their lessons. You can extend here and there on certain topics but you follow their lessons.

I’m happy to help guide you along this process. Send me an email if you would like me to help.

I got hired on this past week. I did my research before I applied. I would recommend 🙂

How exciting! Congratulations! Thanks a bunch for the recommendation!

I should know better after seeing this post on here several times, but I would suggest putting ‘Teachers’ at beginning of the title, as this is for a select group of people. That is, unless they start hiring any joe-schmo that can teach how to coupon/save, then sign me up! lol

    • ksteele293327

You do not have to be a teacher. You must have a bachelors degree though.

    • Jacqui

Anybody with a bachelor’s degree and at least a year of experience with kids (babysitting, tutoring, etc.) can apply.

If anyone is applying anyways, I’d appreciate it if you’d consider signing up through my referral link. I get a bonus and can help you through the start-up process. I teach 100 classes a month and am setting a new goal of 160!

I followed your link to sign up and i would love any guidance you can give me to help me get started.

        • Jacqui

Thanks so much, David! I’d be happy to help. Shoot me an email at with any questions you have!

  5. M

Are they strict on the Bachelor Degree? I have Associate and 1 year additional from college and 35 years of work experience with the public, many with children plus teaching Sunday School and VBS. Would love to do this.

    • Jacqui

Yes, unfortunately. But there are other companies that don’t require it. I can’t recall which ones off the top of my head but I imagine they’d come up in a search.

      • M

Thanks for the reply and info

    • Gentle

The school I teach with doesn’t require a bachelors degree as of right now. If you want more info on them let me know. gentle moss @ me. com

      • Megan Knight

I have an associates degree and interested in why school you currently teach at.

  6. ksteele293327

Just a heads up- you have to be SUPER perky and outgoing to do this. I am a teacher and love my job, but my teaching personality is completely different. I’m much more introverted and I hate the idea of being so “fake” when it’s just not my style. If you watch a few YouTube videos on TPR (total physical response) you will see what I’m talking about. (Just my two cents!)

    • ksteele293327

Another side note- yes the hours are flexible and you open classes at your own pace, but since the students are in China, you have to be an early riser for this! (Like 4:30 kind of early!)

    • Jacqui

That’s what they want for the demo classes, but I’ve found many parents are looking for a laidback teacher. You’ll attract students that are a good fit over time.

    • mariahwinchester

That very thing discouraged me for applying for over a year. However, I applied and was hired. I’m not over the top or perky, but have actually surprised myself with how much I get into it. I’d be happy to help anyone through the process! You can apply here: My personal email is if anyone wants guidance through the initial stages!

    • jan

To get hired you should be more perky, but then you can be yourself and you attract students who relate to your personality. Especially if you teach level 4-7…kids won’t want super perky at that level. I love teaching vipkid!

      • isabel

I am not perky, but I have education experience. However, I am looking for another source of income. I have seen some of these videos that prepare you for the interviews and they seem to be entertaining but that is just not my method of teaching lol.

    • Tilly

My first long-term student started out with her mom telling you just to talk to her in a normal voice. We have had incredible conversations and it’s been a blast to get to know these Chinese students! You can be yourself, you don’t have to be overly perky, just be real and be engaging for the student. My demo teacher really helped me to find a style that was natural for me, and it has been a lot easier because I’m not trying to be someone else.

  7. CeCe

I’m happy to help anyone get started also! I’ve been working for VIPKid for almost a year and other than the brutally early hours, it’s a great job and the company is great!

I’m more than happy to help guide you along the hiring process. It’s not a quick process, honestly! And it helps to have someone to guide you!

(There is a referral bonus for recruiting, which is why you’ll likely see a lot of links on this thread! 😉)

  8. Heather

Not for those in California. I understand they’re no longer hiring teachers from CA due to recent legislation.

    • Ariana Barocio

      Hi! Has this been confirmed?

      • Jacqui

Official message sent through the VIPKID app that links to the FAQ page:

“Can I refer teachers based in California?

Please note that starting December 1, 2019, VIPKid will no longer partner with new teachers from California. Potential teachers from California who have not yet signed their first contract must do so by November 30, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. (Beijing Time) in order to be able to teach on the VIPKid platform.

While this update does not impact current teachers or teachers renewing their contract at this time, this may impact the teachers you refer, so we wanted to keep all teachers informed on the updated policy for potential new teachers from California.

While we understand that this may be concerning, this is a business decision that will help ensure the continued growth and success of the VIPKid platform.

Our goal is for all teachers to continue teaching on our platform, and to continue in our mission to inspire and empower every child for the future. We are committed to seeing this through and offering our support to all teachers on the VIPKid platform.”

  9. Lisa

I applied twice and was denied twice. Apparently I’m overqualified. I have a masters in Education and have been teaching since 1998.

    • Heather

there are a lot of teachers with VIP KID with masters degrees. did you find out why you were turned down?

    • attachmom

I don’t think they deny based on being overqualified. I also have a master’s degree. At what stage of the hiring process were you denied?

  10. GAmommyof4

I’m in my 5th contract with VIPKID. It’s the best job ever!!! I feel like I have found what I was born to do 😁. It’s fun, you get the build relationships with regular students and it’s one on one individualized teaching. If you have any questions I’d be happy to help! Brian and Meredith @ bellsouth . net My VIPKID code is: MERED0054

  11. Jessica

It is a great gig for those that travel! I have been living in an RV traveling for 1.5 years. While I started VIPKID before we hit the road, I have loved that I can continue it now. Flexible for my own needs and I can still homeschool! It has been a great experience for me. If you want to sign up under my link, I would be glad to help.

    • Violet

A little off topic but what do you use for Internet? I thought you had to have a reliable source and I was wondering what you use in your RV for Internet to avoid losing connection? If you don’t mind sharing.

      • Jacqui

I use Unlimitedville since I live way out in the middle of nowhere. They have pocket Wi-Fi options that run on cell service.

      • Jessica

I use a variety of of things. If we have reliable internet at the rv park where we are, I use that. I also have a cell booster and can use my phone as a hot spot when needed. Sometimes we travel internationally and I just make sure that where we are staying has a good connection. When we lived in a house I just used an ethernet cord. That is the best choice for keeping a solid connection. Over time I have learned what works well enough to make it work on the road. We have only had to leave a place once because it just didn’t work out. But I have also driven to towns nearby to get better cell signals.

  12. Jess

    Do you actually earn $22/hour?

    • mariahwinchester

It depends. They offer a base rate. Typically around $8/class. 2 classes per hour. Upon completion of the class I think it’s $1 additional and if you teach 45+ classes per month you get another $1 per class.

    • Jessica

Yes! I do make $22/ hour. BUT- that number will vary according to your class completion and contract amount.

    • Tilly

I started out with the potential for $10 per 25 minute class. I’m guaranteed a base of $9. vIP Kid adds 50 cents per class when I hit around 35 in a month and another 50 cent incentive bonus if I teach 45+ lessons in a month. I hit exactly 41 lessons my first two months. My third month I was finally able to get the full incentive bonuses.

      • Mamamia

41 lessons a month…each lesson is 25 min? So that’s 1025 minutes teaching time a month…which translates to 17 hrs. And if you make $22 an hour (which I’m not sure if that’s what your incentives equal too)…that’s $375 a month. Will they take taxes from this? Please correct me if I’m wrong.
Is there potential to teach full time and make a salary that you can live off of…or is it a part time extra -side -money position?

        • Jacqui

It’s difficult, but not impossible to make it full-time. I would have a back-up plan in case bookings dropped though. The hours are what make it hard to get full-time since you are working Beijing daytime hours. I’m working my way up to full-time two months in and consistently make $20/hr before short notice incentives. My base pay is $8, which is pretty common. You can get a raise after a while, so that is typically where you see people making $22/hr.

    • Jacqui

All of the above, plus you get $2 extra for classes you teach with less than 24 hours notice. There are a few other incentives too, that don’t apply to every class.

  13. Mendy

I am currently pursuing a Bachelors and have been a volunteer for with my daughter’s school, would I qualify?

    • Jacqui

They require proof of a completed degree, but there are other companies that don’t. Maybe start with one of those! It’s a growing field.

  14. Teacherk

If I’m wanting to apply, but don’t want to start teaching until June, should I wait until June to apply? Or can you set your start date when hired?

    • Jacqui

It’s easier to get bookings if you’re ready to start teaching right away since the algorithm puts you at the top of a list for about 2 weeks. Keep in mind, it takes some people a couple months to get a consistent schedule so you’ll need to account for that.

  15. amanda-8

I am a hiring coach and mentor with the company and just signed my 7th contract. It’s fun, it’s legit and it’s flexible. 4 yr degree is required. No CA residents can apply at this time. Glad to share about the hiring process with you and coach you through the mock classes with some helpful tips. 🙂

    • Em

I’ve been contemplating VIP kid for a couple years now and I finally completed the application. I was asked to do a demo lesson as my next step..what’s the best way to go about that? Smart phone or laptop? Any tips I’d appreciate it 🙂

      • Jacqui

Smart demo all the way! You record yourself teaching one slide…super easy. ☺

  16. Ginaoz

You no longer can apply if you live in California I started an application process a year ago but didn’t have the time to finish I just looked it up now
