Walmart Does NOT Accept Walgreens Register Rewards

Alright, so I just want to update you all on the Walmart coupon policy saga! I don’t exactly know where my brain was last night when I posted the Walmart deals… but I didn’t take the time to read through the policy to see that Walmart again made new updates to their policy on 3/16. I am so sorry for all the confusion as I posted last night that Walmart accepts Register Rewards – well, that is actually not the case. In their revised policy they now state that they will NOT accept “Checkout (Catalina) coupons with Dollars/cents off the entire basket purchase or Percentage off the entire basket purchase.” Which means Walgreens Register Rewards will not be accepted.

Again, sorry for all the confusion. And to be quite honest, I am still confused! πŸ˜‰

(Thanks, Alex and Robin!)

WAL-MART WILL STILL ONLY ACCEPT ONE COUPON PER ITEM ACCORDING TO THEIR ” NEW COUPON POLICY.” THANKS COLLIN

  2. LaToya

Their revised policy that you linked to says they do – it’s under the “gladly accept” Catalinas.

    • Robin

It says for a specific item. For instance, $1.50 Pedicare printed at Walgreens.

    • sig

says for “a specific item” … not whole purchase

    • mel

catalina, for a specific item. Like $2.00/3 Post Cereals, you can use @ WM, but not the $4 RR b/c that is off your basket purchase, and that’s under the Do Not Accept part.

      • Jenny

To me this is understandable because there is no way for the store to get their money back from RR’s ya know? At least with a coupon catalina they are still making money off a sale. I didn’t understand how they would allow someone to walk on in to Walmart with, for fun, let’s say $100 in RR’s and walk out with a bunch of free stuff that the store will never get paid for. RR’s are to reward shoppers for shopping at Walgreens not Walmart has no benifits to accept these.

        • Kiesha

You are incorrect. RRs are man qs, paid for by the manufacturer just like other man qs. The military commissaries have been accepting them for some time, as have some other stores. They absolutely *do* get reimbursed for them, I can’t imagine why you think they wouldn’t.

          • Abigail

+ .8 cents extra, Kiesha! If you read the back of RR’s, or any coupon, it says so.

            • Kiesha

              Yup! πŸ™‚

          • Holly

What other stores accept them besides the commissary?

  3. Carla

No problem. I’m sure Wal-Mart is confused too! πŸ™‚

  4. Robin

At least we still have overage!

    • Janice

Hopefully. I did notice the word “may” be given to the customer, hmm, wonder why they didn’t just say “will be given”

      • mel

I take it to mean permission to give, however the bolded part of the policy says:
The following are guidelines & limitations. That to me means its still up to the manager if they want to allow overage or not.

  5. Tyanne Lowe

I got lucky. . .. I shopped on Wednesday and cashed in my $16 worth of Walgreens RR from the Post Cereal deal.

    • Carrie

I used mine too, but it really was a hassle, and made me feel like dirt by the way they were treating me. their policy was so hard to read, it’s really their fault no one could understand it!

      • bellabimba

I agree with you…That happened to me the same thing….I’m not gonna try to even bother use it… It just so frustrating and at the end I wasted my time and still didn’t honor what th policy says…

        • almadh

Same here. Feeling a bit more confident after last week’s revision. I printed to (old) new policy and made a few trips to Walmart with my coupons. 3 trips…3 major hassles. All had a few coupons w overage. None exceeded the value of the basket, none were big orders. All involved a CSM or mananger or both. We calmly discussed the new policy and the reading of the troubled coupons. In the end I got my discount, but it was LOTS of trouble!!

      • jennh76

I have a friend that was able to cash in $600.00 of RR at Walmart last week to score a free TV! She had to do some some prep communication with the store manager & it took forever to scan all RR’s but I think we would all agree it was worth it for a free TV!

        • jgo

Didn’t she have to purchase other *small* items to go along with the tv? (1 coupon per item…) And how in the world did she have $600 worth of RRs??? πŸ™‚ The time it would take ME to collect that many RRs, they would be expiring just as quickly!!

        • Toni

Exactly the reason, in my opinion that Walmart should not accept them. I love free or nearly free items as much as the next person, but “purchasing” a tv is a little greedy & ridiculous to me. Plus having $600 in RR’s just shows how someone is clearing shelves & ruining it for others. Some people actually *need* items for a lost price instead of *wanting* them.

          • Rose

I agree- people like this (with 600 RR’s) is a bit outrageous. People like this make me sick! I can’t believe that Wal-Mart did end up taking that many!

        • Karen

Great that she got a new tv! I often have about 200 – 250 rrs in any given time and I usually split them between the commissary and walmart. Our walmart would accept them before the policy came out since it is a MFQ and will be reimbursed if submitted correctly.

  6. christina

Thanks for the heads up-I was going to try and use a RR tonight at Wal-Mart! πŸ™‚

  7. Carla

Ok — so maybe I need more clarification too lol. For example, when there were two catalinas printing the other day for the Fruity Pebbles — one was a RR and one was actually from Post and was a manufacturers catalina. So, will Walmart not take either one of those?

    • christina

Right, because it is not for a specific item. So they won’t take them.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

nor does it have an address on a RR and it’s off your total basket, not a specific product! That’s why they don’t accept them. Apparently they’ve had a lot of people using Walgreen’s RR, which is a problem because they don’t get reimbursed for them. Walgreen’s RR is an in store promotion at Walgreens.

        • Bee

They state “manufacturer coupon” on the face and have a remit address on them.

          • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

yeah but it’s not a manufacture coupon LOL

        • Lisa

And they do have a remit to address.

        • Rebecca Z.

Read a little closer, it actually does have a remittance address. Register Rewards are coupons from the manufacturer.

        • Kiesha

Laura you are giving incorrect information here. They are man qs and do have a remit address. Other stores do get reimbursed for them just like other man qs. The military commissaries have been taking them for some time and I *promise* you they get reimbursed for them. πŸ˜‰

          • momwhocares

Yup they DO get reibursed for them – my walmart DOES and always HAVE taken the RR for $$ off and they said THEY DO get reimbursed for them. I know quite a few people across the country who use them at walmarts and other NON wags stores (like commisary) and they were told they DO get reimbursed for them.

I wonder if Walgreens and walmart store managers (who hate to see couponers get a great deal) made a huge complaint to Walmart corporation about it and so walmart removed them from the policy.

I think it’s like some readers say – it is up the the store managers in the end -some do not like to handle to many coupons or to many shoppers buying a lot of things at once. Have you seen the issue about foodstamp people causing issues on stores on the first of the month! The companies have requested the governement to change the dates to spread out through out the month to give the stores a break. That also may have something to do with it – imagine those people with all those coupons and RR getting 3 x’s as much groceries because their final amount is so little.

Makes me wonder — hmm… I cant say that’s the case – but still curious

I have to say my local walmart is NOT coupon friendly and there are A LOT of poor class people who go to it and most have food stamps, but the Walmart I shop that is a little farther away – is in the middle to upper class area and they ARE VERY coupon friendly. I live in one of those mixed areas (mostly lower income, but also middle class and higher income mixed) – those who are not the poorer income seem to drive to the stores a little farther I noticed. So, I think this local walmart treats their customers bad because of it.

            • Bee

Hmmm…that is interesting about the food stamp issue. I am quite sure the government is not going to stagger issue dates–would mess up too many people.

I do know I absolutely avoid shopping on the first few days of the month. It’s mayhem and stuff is flat out gone.

It’s not just the food stamps. It’s other government payments as well that fall all on the same day or within a day, etc.

The store I see the most food stamps redeemed at is Aldi, and until very recently, it was the only Aldi for the surrounding 100 miles.

I always have to wonder why the people using food stamps seem to be buying the whole month’s groceries at one time. I understand they may not have lots of gas money, but it does seem like food would go further if there was more than one trip. And I also have yet to see a food stamp user redeeming coupons. Is that against the rules?

            • Crystal

I am a food stamp user and I am an extreme couponer, as well! Just because I am not paying for the food doesn’t mean I don’t do the best I can to get the best deals. This still puts more food in my kitchen! It’s not against the rules. You just haven’t seen some of us who do use coupons and a food stamp card. As far as doing all the shopping on the first of the month, I do not do that either! I stock up on everything when it’s on sale and can be used with coupons. I guess those who don’t use coupons find it easier to go to the store less.

            • Julieanne28

My sis has food stamps and we are big time couponers & we shop at least once a week. It doesn’t matter what form your money is in if you can save then save!

            • andrea

As far as the food stamp/coupon user question, I cannot say from experience, but I think it is probably more a matter of lack of knowlege about how much one can save using coupons. There are many retirees living on fixed incomes who would benefit from using coupons, but they do not because they do not realize how much they might save.

            • Beth

Food stamp dates ARE staggered. It is deposited on a day of the month according to the last number of your ss#.

            • momwhocares

Beth: Maybe in your area but not in Idaho all food stamps are issued on the first of the month to everyone and this is also the case in other states.

Here is an article from Idaho about this:
              ht tp://w ww.ktvb.com/home/Grocery-stores-packed-when-food-stamps-distributed-116984923.html

In california foodstamps last I lived there were distributed accordnng to the first inital of your last name – regions vary. I am referring to the areas who are on the first of the month cycle and like Bee said – there are also other government payments on the first of the month: like SS checks, veterns checks, etc… so yeah all that on the 1st of the month and bam… huge issues. So, even in areas that do not issue foodstamps on the first, there is still those shoppers who get other government checks on the first.

              things that make me wonder…

            • Me

I really take offense to the fact that you think “food stamp people” are causing issues. Number one, here in Michigan your dates are staggered and have been for at least 20-some years I know. Your date changes by one day each month right now to adjust the dates (for leap year?). No one gets food stamp cards refilled on the same date. On that note, I know many people that coupon AND use food stamps and I am one of them. Why would you think with food stamps you wouldn’t have to coupon? You still get $xxx amount of dollars to spend in a month (which is NOT enough to feed a family unless you coupon btw) and you have to make those dollars stretch if you want to have food on the table still. I haven’t heard anything about food stamp users wiping out stores so please post references if you intend to insult and accuse…thanks!

  8. Dee

I went to Walmart this a.m. (Central Indiana) and turned in 4 Register Rewards from Walgreens. Please post if anybody gets confirmation if they are continuing to do so. I used 4 of them today and I had coupons also for all my products I was purchasing.

    • jgo

So it’s not the 1 coupon per item ratio at WM? I asked this question last week on here and someone said that it’s 1 coupon to 1 item…since RRs are manu q’s and a coupon, say out of the Sunday paper is also, then that would be stacking 2 manu q’s for 1 item….

  9. Jackie

I’m glad I used mine when I did. I was really surprised that they took the Catalina and register rewards without batting an eye when I used mine last week.

  10. Michelle

From what I gather, Walmart will expect another stores coupon if it is for example, $1.00 off Special K or $.50 off Stayfree. It has to state dollars and cents off and it has to be for a specific product.

    • DP

I thought they would not accept $$ off competitor coupons?

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

They won’t accept other stores store coupons (non-manufacture), but the will accept target catalina coupons, as these are manufacture coupons πŸ™‚

        • mel

but be careful b/c some of Target’s catalina’s are store coupons not Manuf coupons.

  11. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Target prints out catalinas you can use though.

  12. Nicolecat

Just another reason not to shop there. lol.

    • Jana

I agree!! I try to avoid Walmart at all cost!

    • michelle

We dont shop at walmart. there is always some sort of customer service issue and I always go back to the high cost of low prices documentary.

    • Bev

I have to agree with my brother, who calls Walmart, “the devil’s store”!!! ROFLMAO!!! I avoid it as much as possible.

    • almadh

      Im with you on that!!

  13. Julieanne28

    Collin,
When I emailed you earlier I had just woke up from a nap & had not had a cup of coffee. I knew there was something wrong but I couldn’t figure out what it was LOL!!!! I have my coffee now and I am seeing things more clearly πŸ™‚

Stinks they won’t take RR that are for say $4 off your next purchase. Oh well, I don’t like shopping at Walgreens or Walmart so I guess I don’t have to add stores to my list πŸ˜‰

    Thanks for all you do!!
    Julie

    • whitney

They took mine just a few weeks ago BEFORE all the policy changing. And they WERE register rewards! I thought they’d beep, but they didn’t!

  14. DP

Wlamart just needs to eliminate this problem by offering their own RR. Problem solved!

  15. Elizabeth

I may get blasted, but I don’t think they should accept register rewards. (I mean it would be great if they did, but I’m not going to be upset or anyting about it and put up a fight at the store)

If you are buying that product at Walgreens and getting back your money for it (RR) walgreens is supplying the money back for you to use on your next trip. I know the RR states compliments of so-and-so, but it is really Walgreen’s giving the money back. (I don’t know this for sure, but that is how I think it works).

Under Walmart’s policy they state they DO NOT accept competitor’s money off coupons on your PURCHASE i.e. entire basket. That is what a RR is. It is a coupon for $3, or $5 etc off of your PURCHASE i.e. entire basket. A RR is not a coupon for $3 or $5 off of a specific item. It says $3 or $5 off of your purchase. A purchase is anything you buy from pet food to shampoo. A catalina is a coupon off of a specific item. It shows the item and is good only for that item. A RR is good on anything.

I feel that if they did accept RR’s, you would have a lot more shelf clearing at Walgreen’s because people would buy more products if they were free or money makers and then turn around and go to Walmart or wherever and use the RR’s at that store. For example the Motrin $6 money maker a couple of weeks ago. Sure I bought several, but I had coupons left over because I didn’t want a ton of money to spend at Walgreens. If I could have used the RR’s at Walmart, yeah I probably would have used my other coupons.

I think to stop the confusion once and for all, Walgreens should put on the RR that it is a Walgreen’s coupon and not a manufacturer coupon. That would take away any confusion. I understand Walmart’s policy just fine and agree with it with what they will and will not accept.

    • PG

      Elizabeth,

RR are paid for by manufacturers. Walgreens does not front the money for those.

      • Elizabeth

Yeah, like I said I was unsure who fronted the money. That’s fine. I can still see WM not accepting them though even if they state a MQ for the amount off purchase. I’m fine with it either way. My Walmart and Walgreens are just down the road from each other. Personally though I prefer Super Target so I usually end up going there anyway!!

      • rainbowsava

Glad u said that…I am a Walgreens employee and a couponer as well…and this is exactly the true facts…thanx 4 keepin it short n sweet PG =)

      • andrea

True. But possibly they are an agreement between the manufacturer and the store, to draw customers in to that particular store to buy a particular product?

    • Bee

I think you have misinformation. RR’s have company names and remit addresses on them.

      • mel

Yes, they do, but under the new policy, they state they DO NOT Accept:
Checkout Coupons from competitors that are dollar/cents off the entire basket purchase.
RR says “off your Next In Store Purchase”, meaning WM will not accept those coupon, just catalina’s for a specific item.

        • Bee

Yes, I get that. I was responding to the statement that the RR are not reimbursed by a manufacturer. Whether or not Wal-Mart accepts them, they are not like the CVS ECB.

          • mel

ah, sorry, I misunderstood completely! I thought you were talking about WM, not Wags.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

It’s not a walgreens coupon THAT’S WHY IS SAYS MANF. COUPON. Walgreen turns the coupon to the address listed on the catalina and WALGREENS GETS REIMBURSED BY THIS COMPANY. It actually would lessen shelf clearing cause people wouldn’t come back to walgreens each week to roll their RR.

      • Elizabeth

No they wouldn’t roll the RR’s, but if a good deal is to be found they would do the deal ten times instead of maybe two. Then they would have ten RR’s to spend at WM instead of two. That is what I meant by shelf clearing.

    • Kathy

I agree that most RR are manuf cpns. Locally we have grocery store, Meijer, that accepts them and ANY cat or cpn from another store as long as it says manufacturer’s cpn. I don’t think they’d do this if they weren’t reimbursed – occasionally a cat from Kroger says “store cpn” at the top, not manuf and they won’t take those, which further convinces me they do get reimbursed or why the distinction?

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

        i wish i had meijer πŸ™

    • Susie

Elizabeth, I agree with you 100%.

  16. DP

    Collin,

Change accepts to accept in your title

    • Susie

      WOW. Are you serious?

      • DP

Yes. What is the matter with pointing out a typo?

        • jgo

Ummm….because this is a money-saving site and not English class. Seriously!!!

          • DP

I am very sure Collin appreciates that I let her know, even if you don’t. Now, go read a book.

            • jgo

I will respond to this last comment regarding “reading a book” and I’m done…I have a dual degree and also a Master’s Degree…I think I’ve read plenty, but thank you. But you have a great day!!

        • DP

Then you should know the importance of proper spelling. Thank YOU.

  17. christy

do they accept catalina it looks like it showing accepts ?

    • Julieanne28

If you get a Catalina coupon that says &1.00 off your next purchase of Coffee-Mate creamer (my fav, ah) then yes they will take it. They will not take RR type Catalina’s that say $4.00 off your next purchase compliments of Coffee-Mate. HTH!

      • whitney

They took my RR with my coupons, didn’t beep, cashier just scanned them like the others with no problem. They WERE the Register Rewards like $4 off any purchase, $2 off any purchase, etc that you get after making a qualified purchase.

        • Julieanne28

Yep, they did mine last week too but the newest policy was updated 2 days ago and I bet they won’t take them in the future.

  18. hsmom

Wow… this is the THIRD time in just over a month I’ve had to print their coupon policy. Hope they don’t change it again– I’m out of blue ink.

    • Megan Miller

set your printer setting so you print everything in black and white!

      • Lisa Lord

        that was funny!! πŸ˜‰

  19. Steph

    No harm done!

  20. Janey

I had this very problem about a month ago. The corporate people when I called them (I think four times in all) all stated that they do accept the Catalina coupons off the total order. But, I went four or five seperate times to my local Walmart and they said they don’t take them and it is up to the manager to decide if they will take them or not. My last call to corporate they did say that it is up to the managers if they want to take them, so I asked what is the purpose of their coupon policy. They didn’t know the answer to that question, and my local store was very rude and acted as if I was a criminal for even asking. I was clear and polite everytime they refused to take the Catalina RR, and I always told them what the corporate office said. I did this for about a month before I just gave up. Interesting that they now have it included in their policy. Frustrating!

    • Terri

I always have problems at Wal-Mart and the cashier’s “magically” not ringing in coupons. I left realizing at least 5 of my $3/1 coupons didn’t scan I turned right around and went to customer service. The young lady thankfully was amazing. Went through every coupon (took 15 minutes) but found that the cashier failed to scan 12 coupons totaling $29!!! Now I always count my coupons before handing them over and count them on my receipt before I leave to make sure I got the deals I expected to. I also write to the corporate office about my experiences at each store. I think if more of us coupon lovers did this they might make it a point to train their cashiers better! Just a happy thought =0)

      • Rachael

It has happened to me on several occasions where they do not scan all of my coupons. The first time was horrible! Had to go to customer service and search through all the coupons, but now I watch and when they don’t scan several of them I let them know prior to paying. I have to wonder if they do it on purpose because it has happened on times when I don’t even have that many coupons.

        • Julieanne28

Maybe we should adopt Collin’s policy of handing them over one at a time πŸ˜‰

      • almadh

        Teri,
Ive been writing and writng. Still each and every single time I shop at Walmart I get an uneducated employee who assumes that their store’s prices are so low that anyone who would dare attempt to get an even better deal must be trying to abuse the system in some way. Each time I complain, I just keep reminding myself. This is a culture thing. It took a decade for this mega monopoly to convince America that they are the chepaest. It will probably take savvy shoppers like us another decade to convince Walmart that they are not always the cheapest and definitely not they only place to shop.

      • Holly

Sometimes my coupons stick together (especially the internet coupons) so I just give them to the cashier one or two at a time and watch the subtotal as the coupon comes off to make sure everything’s going through.

  21. Patty Farnsley

To add to this, I was reading somewhere on another site that there is a Walmart in Michigan that is doubling coupons up to $1.00!!! Everyone was flipping out but they also checked with other Wamarts and they knew nothing of this and said they would never do this. If this ever happened at ours, I’de be a happy girl! lol

  22. Ann

I was at Walmart this morning and used $12 RR, no beeping, no problem… Strange and confusing.

  23. Bee

Although this may now be “official” I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have been able to do it at my Wal-Mart at any point. Quite frankly, the deals there are few and far between. Unless a person really has no options other than Wal-Mart, I think I would find it easier and less stressful to cross this store off my list entirely. Before coupons, I had done just that. Their prices have been higher than many competitors for years. Here, the store is located in a large mass of retail, so if the price is wrong at Wal-Mart, it’s easy enough to go across-the-street to Target or Kroger.

No store is perfect, but I have never had the episodes at other stores I have had at Wal-Mart. These days I just go to Wal-Mart to get the few items I can’t get at other stores and that I have great coupons for. But even that doesn’t quite work. I tried several times to use Dentastix coupons there–they were out of the product each time, but the store employee was just too glad to show me I could use my $2 coupon on the $8 bag as opposed to the $2.97 bag–Oh sure, I’m stupid that way. Target (literally across-the-street) had plenty so I went ahead and got them there at $2.99. Not sure why I didn’t do that in the first place–Target does not give me grief about coupons, either. Other products that would be moneymakers at Wal-Mart are mysteriously constantly out-of-stock or the price has been recently jacked up. This chain is really into insulting its customers’ intelligence. I don’t blame shelf-clearing, as Wal-Mart has the most advanced inventory system in the US and places an order each time an item sells.

I do just fine using my RR at Wag’s. I roll them into other deals and sale items. I make sure i never use my RR to pay an unreasonable price for an item, even if I obtained the RR as the result of a moneymaker.

    • Susie

I’m sorry that you have had so much trouble at your local Walmart, but I highly doubt that there is some kind of coupon conspiracy going on. (That’s what your post implies, and if I am wrong, I apologize) Yes – orders are automatically generated through sales, but there are a lot more factors than that. I’m sure that retailers are aware of upcoming coupons (Wags advertises them in the paper) but it isnt really beneficial to them to purposely not have a product for the customer. If instock issues are constant with your store, I would contact the manager.

      • Bee

LOL I don’t suppose there is an actual conspiracy, but nonetheless, I DON’T find what I need to redeem the coupon, trip after trip. The items that are reported as moneymakers are higher than the coupon price, so no moneymaker. And it would most definitely benefit Wal-Mart if people were to purchase the $8 bag of treats as opposed to the smaller $2.97 bag. I had one department manager chase me down when I asked her why she didn’t have the cheaper bags and she wanted to know why I wouldn’t just buy the larger bag–as if there were nowhere else to shop. Then she tried to get me to buy the organic, highly priced treats.

Yes, issues with stock are ongoing, have been going on for about 2-3 years. And it’s not just the store closest to me. It’s the store near my Dad, the store near my in-laws, the store nearest my brother, the store 45 minutes outside of town. No, we don’t live in an area where obtaining stock should be a problem–as evidenced by other chains managing quite well.

I had a logistics professor who absolutely would not believe that I ever went into Wal-Mart and found significant amounts of empty space. I give them the benefit of the doubt on occasion and go back, but still find the empty shelves.

Oh, and once upon a time, the cashiers used to ask me if I found everything I needed. They no longer ask that question.

At the Kroger I go to, when there is a mega event, there are extra employees placed on the floor to monitor that the sale item shelves stay full. Incidentally, this Kroger is right across-the-street from Wal-Mart. Ah well, it could be worse. It could be that I have no choices where to shop.

Forward your questions, comments, and/or complaints to Wal-Mart corporate office!! They make billions of dollars off of people who do not use coupons, most of their employees are not aware of their own coupon policy and I don’t think we should be treated like criminals for using coupons! Most of their products are made in china anyhow and cost them cents!! Anyone remember what their logo was before their “revision”? They had the star from the chinese flag in the middle of Wal and Mart!

C’mon – that star was not Chinese.

      • Terri

        It was a joke.

    • tilla ham

i’m not a huge supporter of walmart, and in fact in my city, I avoid it like the plague, but I did work there when I was young and contrary to popular belief, they were very good to me. They paid $1.00 more an hour than Target and I was able to have 2 babies on their medical insurance and only pay $100.00 OOP. The Star was Changed from Wal-Mart to a Wal (star) Mart when Sam Walton died to pay respect to him. Also we had giant Stars with our names on them on the floor to show those of us employees that owned stock and were superstars. It had nothing to do with China.

  25. LaToya

My Walmart still accepts the RRs and the CATs….and takes competitor store doublers and doubles. I talked to the manager – said there is a corporate policy…and that they will not do any less than that but that on a local level they can do MORE/BETTER which is what they are doing…to compete with the other grocery stores in the market.

  26. jrodriguez77

Their coupon policy is a MESS! I was there today using a coupon I printed yesterday for EAS protien bar, it said, free sample, manufacture’s coupon up to $3.89 or something like that. She said well we aren’t supposed to take it because it requires no purchase. So the manager came and said, well just scan it and see what happens, so she did and put in the purchase price and said okay there ya go. But they aren’t supposed to do it?? Geesh, I really wish they’d make it more clear!

    • Terri

I used this same coupon and it wouldn’t scan. I thought I’d have a problem but the cashier asked where I printed it from. I said the EAS website, and I did not cut the coupon to show that it was printed on their website at the top and bottom of the page. I did this for Kibbles and Bits coupon and Sunbelt. It actually helped and I got all those deals with no problem. Just an idea! Goodluck!
**I was not buying anything for less than the price of the coupon though. I was paying OOP .94 for the 4 count protein shakes with coupon**

    • Mari

Hmm, the policy does say they accept:
β—¦For free items (except those printed off the Internet)

      and don’t accept:
β€’Print-at-home Internet coupons that require no purchase

  27. Kelly

This is just a thought — not intended to make someone mad, but, if I had a bunch of RR from Walgreens, why not just use them at Walgreens? getting $16 worth of stuff free sounds good to me!!

    • Ann

I have been using RRs them at Walgreens, and love them (rolling them for a few months). I love to shop in such a small atmosphere like Walgreens where I know the cashiers. However, it’s nice to be able to use RR on other items that you need (like produce and meat) other than just health and personal care products. I’m so stocked up on that stuff from Wags deals that I need another alternative to use RRs.

      • Kelly

I hear ya! It seems like Walgreens RRs are on the same products over and over again. I, too, am stocked up on toothpaste and toothbrushes — I swear every week there is a RR for those things and I always seem to have a Manufacturer coupon to use, too, which makes the deal sweeter, but I’d love to see a RR on more food items, for instance. I don’t think I’ve ever had $16 worth of RRs anyway! I only try to buy what’s on sale and try to see if I can come out of the store spending $5.00 or less by using coupons and RRs. And, if I don’t have a coupon to go with an item that is on sale, I try not to buy it, I figure I’ll have a coupon later on and the item will go on sale later on, too! Maybe, Walmart will get their on RRs!? I’m not counting on it!!

    • Mari

You can often get more bang for your buck at Walmart. The same item cheaper at Walmart (or a different item since Walmart has so many more products than Walgreens)means more items, or more choices for items, for the same amount of money. Not to mention the coupon policy at Walgreens that limits the amount of coupons used etc. Anyways, it looks like we aren’t allowed to use them, but if we could that would be awesome. I have had RR’s expire on me several times because it is not worth it for me to do a special trip to Wags for $2-5 or whatnot (especially with gas prices!), but if I could use them at Walmart I would have a better chance of using it.

    • Bee

It is a good deal. It just takes a more involved thought process to maximize the savings. Wag’s prices in general are not very competitive and there is only a 2 week window to use the RR. So careful planning is a must. Because after all, it’s not a bargain if one turns around and uses the RR on an over-priced item.

After awhile it becomes easier to identify the deals and roll the RR’s. My teen is pretty good at it.

    • Kathy

Reason I like to use RR at other stores:
they do not carry as broad a selection of items, you only have 2 weeks, they require “filler” items and are often out of stock on sale items!

I’m not a huge WAGS or WalMart shopper, but WalMart would get a bit more business from me on occasions when I do have larger RR – there are only so many things I need/want at WAGS!

      • Kelly

I try to go to Walgreens every week — sometimes on Sunday, the first day of the sale and other times I may not get there until Saturday, the last day. Last week was a slow week for me at Walgreens — I really only needed one item that was on sale and when I got there they didn’t have what I wanted – and this was a Sunday, too, and since I had a RR for $2.00 that was going to expire, I used it on a magazine and ended up spending only $.50 for it — sort of a treat for me!!

    • Laura

If it were $16 worth of free stuff then that would be one thing, but that was $16+ that I spent before to get those coupons. Walgreens is much more expensive than my Target and the deals there are generally not as good as Targets. I have trouble finding another good deal at Walgreens to use my RR on. ‘ve never actually used a RR reward at Target, I rarely shop at Walgreens but go there to get the really good deals, but thank you Collin for posting this, I’m definitely going to try it! If it’s a manufacturer coupon, anywhere should accept it. If were a Walgreens promo it should say that you can only redeem it at Walgreens. I have to get good deals on my food because I only have a $200 food budget. Why should I pay for coupons that were supported by manufacturers, not Walgreens, and not be able to use them anywhere else? Somewhere I can actually get a really good deal.

    • andrea

Most of Walgreens prices are higher than at a grocery store or Walmart too, except perhaps on some of the generic medicines. I never shop there any more because I always had trouble rolling the RRs without spending a bunch more out of pocket.

  28. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I just read Walmart’s coupon policy and I am going to print it out and take it to the store with me next time. I was just in our Walmart is SC two days ago and told they wouldn’t do BOGO, even with the competitor’s price in the paper, and that they wouldn’t take internet printed coupons. The CSM had a piece of paper that she said was from Corporate stating this. Looks like there’s a contradiction somewhere. I don’t like Walmart, but also don’t like running all over town to different stores. I always just take my ads and have them match prices.
That is one big problem with Walmart, they are so big and have so many people who think they “own” Walmart making up their own rules.

  29. michelle

    Harris Teeter accepts RR.

    • Kiesha

None in my area do. Wish they did though. πŸ™‚

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Our Harris Teeter NO LONGER accepts RR πŸ™

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

i’ve used it recently without any problems. the cashier did look at it though.

  30. Whitney

Now if they would just offer DOUBLE COUPONS! I would be sooooo happy!

  31. rachael

Do you think if we get a grumpy cashier we could point out (with our printed out handy dandy coupon policy) that they are supposed to GLADLY accept the coupons? LOL! =D

    • Noelle P

      This made me laugh πŸ™‚

    • Wendy

I’ve had some cashiers I would love to point that out to! πŸ™‚

    • Laura

Do it and then send it in for the Collins hip picture thing! Maybe you can get a prize and we can all get a smile!

      • rachael

        ooh…good call…maybe I just will!! =)

    • Laura

hmmm, might have to try that. Seems like everytime I go into walmart with my coupons I have some sort of trouble.

      • (Different) Laura

That’s why I don’t go to Walmart! I go to Target! I paid $6 today for a pack of three T-shirts, a pair of pants, Gillette Deo and Bodywash, 2 packs of Buddig meats, some visine, and some ky! I love Target! You can get much better deals when you also have Target coupons!

  32. mimi-coolchick

Ok I know Walmart has cheap prices on many items, but I hate to say it but I HATE Walmart. I dislike going in there, I dislike all the policies and procedures and truly hate how they treat their employees and their customers. I find stores like Target and Grocery Stores (i.e. Publix, Bi-Lo, etc) that double or allow store and manuf coupons to be way cheaper and I feel good about my purchase. OK I will get off soap box. Collin dont feel bad about the confusion.. I personally think WALMART confuses people intentionally.

    • lovetora

I have a bunch of friends who work at Walmart and they LOVE it. Have you actually talked to anyone who works there? People think that all the propoganda is true – until they talk to some workers.

      • tilla ham

I agree, they were a very good company to work for as far as the retail industry goes. It was fun, my management team (except for one arse that got fired) was awesome and became a family. I got regular raises, merit raises, and had great insurance as well as stock beneifts a profit sharing and a 401k plan. As I said above, I do not like to shop there in my city because that location as well as the Kmart location are very trashy. Target in my city is nice and bright.

  33. Christina

Ok so does any store now accept the free item coupons printed off the internet? Such as the ones for Free Bottle of Excedrin or the free Planters Almonds? I had previously used them at Walmart but now with this change IDK where to use them….

    • mel

well, they should accept those, as they weren’t printed, but mailed to us (the back has that special scratch paper). But any coupon you print going forward for a Free item, they won’t accept.

  34. muser

Simple solution to the frustration = shop elsewhere.

    • Julieanne28

      *like*

    • Chi

TRU DAT. It was good until it lasted (about them taking RR).

    • Kathy

Good idea! I mostly do, shop elsewhere, but was thinking of returning… I don’t care as much about the policy as I do the confusion and changes!

  35. savingmom

Its totally fine! We will all learn together! πŸ™‚ With all the work you do your entitled to a mis-print every now & then. Love this website! I use it daily. I shop at pubix and target weekly and only get the deals you post. Thanks!

  36. melissa

Had a problem today with overage. After 20mins of management I got the revlon overage, but they would not take the string cheese coupons πŸ™ I still got a $57 bill down to 58cents though! (the cashier was so angry) Thank you for this site!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I don’t understand why these cashiers care so much? If walmart’s policy is to accept these coupons, why do they give us such a hard time? It’s just a coupon for goodness sake! Most of us aren’t trying to rip walmart off, just save our families some money

    • Laura

I tried to use those frigo cheese coupons also on the single “package”. The cashier told me she couldn’t accept it because it was a $.33 item and the coupon was for $1.50. I said according to the “new” coupon policy you can and I get the overage toward the rest of my stuff, besides she just scanned 6 of the $3 purex. She then told me, along with the CSM that it wasn’t whats pictured. I let it go and took back my coupons. The thing that bothered me about it was why she said she couldn’t take it. It totally contradicted the other coupons she had already scanned and some she pushed through.

      • Thaddeus

@ Laura: Next time just ask the cashier to try scanning it and see what happens. I usually do that and it works. I call their bluff. I then say I have done it before and it works. Usually this helps.

  37. Grace

quick question (sorry if someone already asked that)

what does its mean … walmart will accept BOGO with specific price and does not offer without specific price? does it mean that BOGO coupon as up to certain amount like … cant exceeded 4.17 …

and if its not printed but from newspaper and its BOGO without price … so i guess they dont accept that???

    thanks

    • Wendy

Unfortunately, what it probably means is if it is specifically listed “Buy one at $X.XX, get one free”. Thankful my local Walmart has a couple of great cashiers that never give me any problems with my coupons and price-matching!

      • Grace

hmmm .. first thanks for answer … but if that is the case … i usually see these kind of sales in walgreens but not on coupons … coupons are either BOGO or BOGO up to (lets say) 4.17 … or have even see … SAVE 3.00 if you buy 2 of certain items not sure if those are BOGO though … hmmm …

        • mel

I think it means if some stores have BOGO coupons, they won’t accept the coupon if there’s no value listed. For example, you have X Store Coupon that says “Buy any Bagged Salad, Get a Bottle of Salad Dressing Free” WM won’t take it b/c there is no value for the Salad Dressing. But if the coupon says “Buy Bagged Salad, get $1.50 off a Bottle of Salad Dressing”, then they would accept it b/c there is a value.

It IS rather confusing, I’ll just stick with those coupons that give overage and not worry about all the other rules!

          • Kiesha

No, they would not accept either of the coupons in your example. It has to list a specific price, for example “Buy 1 Jello Temptations at $2.99, get a second one free!” That type of coupon is basically a price match.

  38. Sakura

I thought this was funny. Last night I ran to Rite Aid to grab a script and some Nivea. There was a lady in front of me in line and she looked so familiar. She had a bunch of random things in her cart with a handful of coupons. I asked her if she worked there, and she said no. She was actually a cashier at our local Walmart, but she liked shopping at RA better because it’s easier to use her coupons! I got a kick out of that one.

  39. Claudia

I used 4 3RR @walmart without any problems. The cashier said as long as they scan they will take them

    • Claudia

      And it was yesterday 03/17

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

ok I’ve use it to and it worked but not the second time

  40. amy

I’ve jused my RR at Kroger and they work just fine! (only used in uscan)

  41. Kelli

Just got back from testing out the overage policy and it worked for me. the cashier had to verify the couponn amt and she looked pretty confused but pressed yes anyway. then she pressed total and got an even more confused look when it was -$1.64. I didn’t want to press my luck so I got 2 more packs of gum and paid .52 πŸ™‚

  42. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh no!! that’s not good we can’t use WG RR at WM πŸ™ Walmart has more selection than walgreens. At least they update it and guess I gotta use it at Walgreens. Love the overages that walmart provides when we use a regular coupon. Thanks for the info

  43. Kristen

I think I’ll become a Target girl.;-) I even live an hour from the WalMart corporate office and the service isn’t any better over here.

  44. Abigail

I’m so stinkin’ confused, too! agh!!!

  45. Christina

Collin and readers, NOTICED A GREAT CHANGE IN THIS NEW ONE TOO!!! THERE IS NOOOOO LIMIT TO THE NUMBER OF COUPONS IN A TRANSACTION NOW,M THIS IS GREAT, NO MORE POWER TRIPPING EMPLOYEES ON THAT PART OR THE TROUBLE OF NEEDING A MANAGERS APPROVAL. iT SAYS THE SYSTEM WILL NOW PROMPT FOR A SUPERVISOR VERIFICATION FOR 40. A COUPON OF $20 OR GREATER, $50 OR MORE IN COUPONS IN ONE TRANSACTION. Sorry I find this part great news. That means a bigger shop without the hasstle of being treated odd or having the cashier get snippy about it.

    • Amy

I find this to be a problem…I just shopped tonight for my groceries…and I shop once a month because I am a mom of 4 children and work full time….but I also pick up cheap deals throughout the month…anyway…during my shopping trip tonight I was hassled with the register calling for a manager and then was told that I could only use $50 worth of coupons per transaction…ugh! After all my hard work is all I could think….luckily the manager put it through this time….haven’t decided if I will continue to shop for groceries any longer @ Wal Mart

      • Christina

thanks, that has always been my problem too as a family of 5, and when I go there it’s like once a month. Maybe I’ll just stay away too…tired of the employees taking things so personal and not wanting to price match too. They need employees who have no problems using the policy’s set in place. I had a problem the other day with overage, the cashier tried to tell me first wrong product (not), then coupon too big(not). I mean why put these steps in place and everyone is just falling off them? I guess they better learn fast that THEY are losing customers to RiteAid and Walgreens and Target…NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. I can’t wait until my Target grocery store is complete….MOST love when you coupon and stack, they make you feel good and congratulate you. Good luck, What are they gonna do when customers start to walk away with the carts at the registers? UHHH maybe thats what we need to start doing.

  46. RayAnne

My local WalMart accepted Register Rewards no problems, no questions asked! Woot Woot!

  47. lori

i had no problem using my rrewards at walmart the head cashier told the cashier who was not aware that yes they do as long as they say manufacture and have remit address on them

  48. Alysia

ok so WM does not accept competitor coupons for an amount off, but does accept one for a specific price (ex. $2.99). So wouldn’t that just be an ad-match? Which they’ve always done.

  49. Holly

Yet again…epic fail Walmart…you still can not get me back as a shopper. I almost hit them up this weekend just to give the new policy a try and it has already changed…I will stick to Kroger where they double coupons and don’t make me jump through hoops!

  50. John

    Thoughts from a Walgreens Manager:

    Competitor Coupons:
The reason that one company might be reluctant to accept a coupon from another is that we don’t always get reimbursed. Yes, usually we do, but it is frustrating to give away product in exchange for a worthless piece of paper. For Walmart it is probably easier just to avoid as much of the mess at all. Especially because Walgreens has RR that are not manufacturer coupons, that look almost identical, but are Wag funded. Also although the coupon is paid by the company that is funding it, Wag agrees to sell the product that generated the RR at a loss, as we expect to make the money by cashing the coupon. Obviously we lose at if you take the coupon elsewhere.

    Stocking:
No store manager would try to be out of anything. We try hard to keep everything in stock, and we track it daily. Stock levels are based on sales, and we almost never know when an ad will line up with recently issued coupons and then I will run out. I’m forced to choice between have way too much product, or occasionally running out of some things. I stock ten thousand items, and I am out of 300 right now. I do my best, but coupons cause a high level of variability in sales numbers. If on a normal week I sell 10 widgets, on an ad week it might go to 25. If it happens to line up with an internet coupon I need 40. I have to order weeks in advance, and its not always going to work out. Also my warehouse is just like a giant store, if they are out, I’m out, and there are all sorts of reason up and down the supply chain that I might not get enough/any product. Its not an excuse, but just an explanation.

    Cashiers:
I can only speak for the stores I’ve worked at, but cashiers don’t have a problem with you, or coupons in general. They don’t like it when things don’t go smoothly, and they might not like having to have a manager help them out. Their job is to “get rid of the line”, get people out the door as fast and politely as they can. Coupons, computer problems, old ladies writing checks, all slow them down and can ruffle even the calmest of cashiers. Coupons are equally frustrating for both you and the cashier, and just like you have all had rude cashiers, we have also had some crazy lady yell at me for doing it “wrong”. Also we deal with a fair amount of coupon fraud, so it has caused a sense of caution or skepticism.

    Advice:
Ring up in cosmetics. They love coupons, and almost every store has a Cos Lady that has a file of coupons to share or trade.

Don’t call corporate, it really doesn’t help. All corporate will do is try to calm you down, explain anything they can, and then email the store manager about the situation. The best bet is to get to the store manager directly. There are some bad apples in every company, but these are the people who actual make the rules and train the cashiers.

Ask the employees whats on sale. We spend 40 hours a week in the store, we are basically like full time shoppers. I can always point you towards some great clearance or unadvertised deals.

    Happy Shopping,
    John
