Classic Beef Stroganoff (Favorite Childhood Recipes Series)

Adding Sour Cream to Classic Beef Stroganoff

Need a soul-warming DELICIOUS meal idea?

Consider making this homemade classic Beef Stroganoff, a continuation of our Childhood Recipes series. We asked all you Hip2Save readers to tell us which old-school type meals you grew up eating, and Beef Stroganoff was definitely a popular response! This cozy meal idea will give you all the feels and is as comforting as a warm hug from grandma!

Luckily, it’s simple to make at home!

This process consists of browning strips of sirloin on the stove and then making a satisfying gravy by sautéeing mushrooms and onions, finally adding in sour cream.

Serve this on top of egg noodles and top with fresh parsley for an outstanding from scratch dinner the entire family will LOVE!

Classic Beef Stroganoff

Creamy beef strips served over egg noodles, just like grandma used to make.

Serves: 4-6

Cook Time: 50 minutes



  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 lbs. beef tenderloin or sirloin, cut into thin strips
  • 6 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1/2 cup onions, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 oz. mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 12 oz dried egg noodles
  • topping: chopped parsley


  • Step 1:

    Mix flour, salt, pepper, and paprika together in a small bowl, and dredge each piece of meat in the mixture.

  • Step 2:

    In a large frying pan or saucepan on the stove, heat 3 tablespoons of butter and brown meat. Set browned meat aside on separate plate.

  • Step 3:

    To the pan, add onions and garlic. Sauté until onions are translucent. Add mushrooms and continue Sautéing for a few minutes until mushrooms are cooked.

  • Step 4:

    Add the broth and bring to a boil. Add the meat back in and cook until tender, stirring often, for about 10 minutes. Reduce heat.

  • Step 5:

    Mix the sour cream with Worcestershire sauce and pour into the pan. Stir to create a creamy texture.

  • Step 6:

    Serve over cooked egg noodles. Top with fresh parsley.
