Halloween is only 97… or possibly just 92 days away!

The Halloween & Costume Association recently launched a petition to change the day of Halloween to the last Saturday of October every year versus keeping the holiday on October 31st. At the time of this post, the petition already has 77,000+ signatures and counting!

The petition was created as part of an effort to promote a “safer, longer, and more stress-free celebration” of Halloween! A Saturday would allow for longer Trick-or Treat times for your little ghosts and goblins and would guarantee that all Halloween parties were celebrated on the weekend.

The majority of the reasons listed on the petition for the change revolve around safety. But, it also stands to reason that kid’s bed times and parent’s work schedules are huge contributing factors as well. If the change actually goes into effect, Halloween would be held on October 26th this year.

Will you be signing the petition or should Halloween stay put on October 31st?

    Absolutely NOT!!

“No way” says Mr Pumpkin 🎃

    • az2nh

I’m all for “keeping it real” but perhaps we could be grown-ups and refrain from name calling. I think it’s silly when someone has an idea to change something, often times because our society and overall world has changed, and instead of having adult conversations and discussions, people (i.e. you) refer to them as “snowflakes”. No one is asking for a participation trophy for trick-or-treating, they are simply bringing their ideas to the table with valid reasons to support the idea. If you want to keep it real then great, but try to mix that “real” with a little bit of decency.

  3. Sara

    Nope.

  4. Erika

    No!

  5. Wren

    No 👎🤓

  6. Laura

This is so stupid. What’s next, moving Christmas to the last Sunday in December? Sheesh.

  7. Irla

    No Way!!!

  8. Ivan

We have less and less kids every year. I think a lot of parents are taking their kids to trunk and treats and other get togethers instead of going door to door Halloween night.

    • Juliette

I totally agree. Over the past 10 yrs I’ve lived in 3 different houses, each in a family neighborhood, within neighboring cities. The most we had at one year was 6! I think it’s become Halloween week or season with trunk-or-treats/parties/etc rather than celebrated on one night.

  9. Gisette

Nope, our family loves Halloween 🎃 👽🤡😈

    • AP

No one is saying to get rid of it… 🤷‍♀️

  10. Amy P

As a kindergarten teacher, I like this idea. Trying to teach over-tired, sugar crazy kiddos is hard! If Halloween is in the middle of the week, you lose the beginning of the week to the anticipation and the end of the week to the detox. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • Jacinda

Girl I am too and I’m kind of with you! Plus I’m exhausted from taking my own kids and then going to teach crazy kiddos the next day!!

    • Aw

We did a trunk or treat on a school night. I was the mean mom and my kids only got to eat one piece. My kids needed to go to bed on time and not fight me it go to school the next day. My mom and sister work at a school. I hear how bad the next day is😞

      • Kim

I guess I’m always the mean mom, lol. My kids never get more than 2-3 pieces of candy no matter the holiday. Halloween, Easter, Christmas, Valentines, etc. Anytime they get large amounts of candy, it all gets put in containers in the pantry and they get a couple pieces as a treat throughout the year. I’d rather be the mean mom than let my kids binge on candy and get sick or act like maniacs.

  11. Nels

    I think it’s a great idea.

    • Lucy

As a pediatric speech therapist, my vote is yes. The day after Halloween is the one of my least favorite days of the whole year! We call it a Halloween hangover 😂🥴

  12. Marion

I think it’s a great idea! My 4th grader starts school at 7am and going trick-or treating early doesn’t work since most people don’t get home until around 6 in our Neighborhood. Having Halloween on a Saturday would make it more fun for everyone without having to worry about school the next morning.

  13. Donna

    My vote says heck no

  14. Evelyn

As a working mom, I really like this idea. I usually miss out on taking my kids trick-or-treating because I don’t have the flexibility to take time off work or leave early on a Thursday. Halloween on a Saturday would allow more parents to take their kids door to door and experience this fun tradition!

  15. Kim

    Absolutely “no!”

  16. Brooke

I understand the logic, but I think many people forget what Halloween actually is. It is more than costumes, parties and trick or treating. It originated as All Hallows Eve or the Eve of All Saints Day (which is Nov 1st). Moving it makes no sense by definition.

    • Dee

      Exactly!

    • renee

Exactly. It is my birthday and also by definition cannot be moved.

      • Brooke

It’s also my son’s birthday. I love that he gets a little extra fun on his special day, but I can see the other side as well. However, I feel that moving it to a Saturday will not be any safer. If parents do not make the effort to keep their children safe now, it won’t matter what day it is. They’ll put forth the exact same effort on a weekend. Sure, having it on a Saturday would be convenient, but if convenience is the only argument for moving any part of Halloween (as opposed to how/why this day exists) then it should stay as is.

  17. Lk

Ya, right. What they really mean is they want to sell more costumes. I vote no

  18. Jo28p

I think it’s great. We try to go early to get back home in time for bed but a lot of people aren’t home or are just getting home at that time. It’s much more family friendly moving it and it’s better for younger school aged kids!

    • Jo28p

Also, I think if you celebrate Halloween because of religious (Wicca) reasons, you still would celebrate on all’s hallow eve. For most of us, Halloween is just for fun and certainly that part (the trick or treat part) can be moved to a Saturday.

  19. Mary

Great idea! Less stress than when it falls during the week and the kids have school the next day. You can see the difference in participation at our house when it falls on a weekend vs during the week. We get three times the amount of kids visiting our house and walking the neighborhood when it falls on a weekend. Love, love, love this idea and I will surely be signing it. Thanks so much for letting us know! Love Hip2Save 🙂

  20. AP

I’m surprised at all the no’s, I’d be interested in hearing why. I say sure, why not? Makes sense. A generation from now no one will even remember it used to be on the 31st.

  21. ~jenn~

No. Halloween was started hundreds of years ago and it was long before Hershey’s got involved. It isn’t about parties, candy and trick or treating. It shouldn’t be changed for convenience or retail.

  22. Mary

YES! YES! YES! Love this idea. More parents who work during the week will be able to be involved in taking their kids out on a weekend than they can during the week. Kids will also be able to participate without falling asleep the next day during school. Will sign it right now.

  23. Natasha

My town for as long as i can remember has always had trick or treat the Sunday before or closest to Halloween from 1pm-5pm, so that kids are not late after dark. But thats just where I live, the surrounding towns all do theirs on different days and growing up I always thought it was a stupid idea but now that Im older and with the cruel world we live in, it makes sense to do it that way for safety reasons. But as for moving the whole holiday on the calendar that i do not agree with, you can celebrate whenever you want, changing the date on the calendar shouldn’t have an effect on that!

  24. Stephanie

I just find it funny that they are pushing that it’s for safety reasons. Saturday night is not any safer than a week night. Honestly more traffic on the roads on the weekend. Those percentages they show of parents who don’t share safety instructions with children, don’t travel with children or don’t send them with a flashlight is not going to drop due to moving the day. Those parents will do the same thing they did (or didn’t do) last year just on a different day! Just saying. Those facts don’t justify or back up a reason to change it to Saturday.

    • jen

But it could be during the daytime, and for a longer window of time. Easier visibility, and much fewer crazed parents trying to rush home in time, is safer.

      • Stephanie

I’m solely talking about the facts they listed. Daytime or not, there are still the parents who don’t teach safety and let them go out alone and thats going to happen no matter what day of the week or time of the day. So they arent fixing this issue that is listed as a reason to change it. And I’m sorry, but my local roads are busier on a Saturday than any other day. More people off work, more shopping being done. I have never noticed those crazy parents on halloween night rushing home like I have noticed weekend traffic. All I am saying is you cant push safety as a reason to change it when you still have no control over the parents. Daytime or not.

  25. Stacey

My wedding anniversary is Oct 31, Halloween, NOT THE LAST SATURDAY IN OCTOBER!

  26. senda

What a great way to get this foolish idea into the hands of law-makers. We have actual REAL big boy and girl girl issues in this world. I cant believe people would want this to take away from the already wasted time of the people who would push this silly thing into effect. The time and energy needed for this would be astronomical. Also the money… 🙄🙄
    Thanks but no thanks…pfft

  27. Monique

I hear the petition has almost 60k in signatures but no I vote to keep Halloween where it is…

  28. jerita browne

Hersheys is thinking that by moving the date more children would Trick or Treat for candy. Therefore increasing sales. This has big business written all over it.

  29. Lee

    No. No. And more no.
For those asking for a reason. It’s All Hallows Eve. It makes no sense on another day. If your city wants to do trick-or-treating during the weekend that’s fine. No need to move the whole holiday to do that. Trick-or-treating is not the only part of Halloween and it’s not just about kids – although they are a wonderful part of it and I do love getting trick-or-treaters. Halloween is the last day of October, its seasonal. One way of celebrating the holiday can be moved to make it easier for those with kids. However, I’m loathe to give up even one day of my 9 ft tall giant inflatable dragon and deny myself the extra days to celebrate my second favorite time of the year. Also, mid-week Halloween is great for adults, even childless adults who are old and not the big on parties. It give you two weekends to do Halloween things (haunted houses, horror movies, parties, etc).
Really, the problem is defining Halloween as “trick-or-treating”. I’m guessing you’d get a lot fewer no’s to the idea of doing trick-or-treating on the weekend. A bunch of the cities by me already do that, so trick-or-treating happens on two or three days (Saturday, Sunday, and the 10/31; we have some religious areas that Saturday is not a good day for) when the holiday is mid-week depending on the city. It’s no big deal and no one cares. And anyone really into it (like some teenagers) can do multiple nights of it. From reason I stand there is no reason to change. Just ask your city to make it the best time for your city.

  30. Cindy

No! No! No! Halloween is October 31 no matter what day it falls on. Just like Christmas is December 25th, New Year’s is January 1st, Valentine’s Day is February 14th and Fourth of July is July 4th…plus all other “set date” holidays! The ones who signed the petition should be told that “their birthday” needs to be celebrated when its “more convenient for EVERYONE else”! I’m pretty sure no one is going to be signing that petition! COME ON!

    • AP

Labor Day doesn’t fall on a specific date, Memorial Day doesn’t fall on a specific date, Thanksgiving doesn’t fall on a specific date, and December 25th isn’t even Jesus’s birthday.

    • MommySpendsLess

I don’t have a strong opinion regarding Halloween but I have to respectfully disagree with your argument. A lot of people, especially children, celebrate their birthday on the weekend closest to their actual birthday to make it more convenient for everyone else. My immediate and extended family have always had birthday parties on the weekend and my husband, daughter and I have never been invited to a mid-week birthday party. Having worked at Chuck E Cheese’s during high school and college the ratio of weekend to weekday birthday parties would indicate that most people in my town also favor waiting until the weekend to celebrate their birthdays.

  31. Marie

What they really should’ve done is word it in a way that says let’s move trick-or-treating to the last Saturday of the month nationwide, and then just leave actual Halloween on the 31st, alone. I think that would’ve persuaded much more people to join in on this movement.

    • Heidi

      This!!

    • tipaye

      Agreed

  32. Donna

I’ve been saying this holiday should have been moved to permanent Saturdays for years!. I VOTE YES!

  33. Pam

    Absolutely not!

  34. Jen

Yes! So much easier to do school parties on a Friday and have kids recovered from festivities by Monday.

  35. Lora

I’m not in favor of this. Keep Halloween on October 31st. Usually kids only trick or treat for about 1/2 hour to an hour, depending on their age, because they get tired out and their bags get heavy. Most people spend about 1 and 1/-2 to 2 hours during a weeknight to take their kids to soccer, swim practice, girl scouts, (fill-in your sport/activity) and etc. with commute time included and that occurs more than once a year. There is no petition to move all extra curricular activities to weekends only.

    • MommySpendsLess

As a working mom if there was a petition to move all activities to the weekend (or with 6-6:30pm start times) I would definitely sign it!

  36. Mommyof71987

Our family doesn’t celebrate Halloween. So doesn’t matter to us. 😀

  37. easterb

I think cities should implement a “beggars night” which is what we did when I lived in Ohio. It was always the Saturday before Halloween and that is when you went trick or treating. It was nice and then we would do something more as a family on the actual night unless Halloween fell on a Saturday.

  38. Gia

No. My city with a population of 38,000 already has it on the Sunday closest to Halloween. Been that way for over 40 years. Leave Halloween on the 31st.

    • Gia

      “it” being “Trick or Treating”

  39. deb

My birthday is the 31st so as a child my party consisted of trick or treating and now as an adult nothing can be planned unless before or after the grandkids trick or treating. Yes, please give me a special day !!

  40. Diana

No way. My birthday is not always on a sat and that is ok. This is too ridiculous.

  41. Trish

How is this a “problem” people are working on? Open your eyes…

  42. Pora

I understand the whole parent working and the teachers perspective. But at the end of the night, the parent make the decision on the candies. Halloween has always been on the 31st and it’s dumb how this is even a topic. There’s bigger problems to worry about and this certainly shouldn’t be one. Only reason there’s less and less kids is because of dumb people ruining a fun night for kids everywhere. As a working parent, if I know there’s an occasion that involves my kids I change my schedule ahead.

    • Go Zags

I have mixed feelings about this. I understand both sides. I just think you should be aware that not everybody has work schedules that they change. I’m also tired of the argument that there are bigger problems to work on. So what if there is? Even if people weren’t talking about this subject doesn’t mean they would be working on bigger problems.

      • Pora

If you see,I said ahead and if people can call off work then I’m sure they can to for their kids. Why does it need to work around everyone else, Halloween has always been on the 31st regardless of what day. It’s like whenever a celebrity or anyone popular comes up with a new idea, everyone wants to join in. Like it’s been that way for years and somehow people back then had time.

  43. FloridaGirl1218

I’m voting leave it alone. I have kids and while I take ours out, my husband stays home and hands out because our neighborhood is so crazy. Who needs a longer Halloween?? Go home and go to bed! Bah humbug 😂

  44. Jenny

I am a mother of 3 small children. I vote not vote for this. It’s definitely not about safety! Life is full of things inconveniences, teaching our children how to adapt in circumstances that’s aren’t always perfect is part of life.

  45. Christy

    No.

  46. Brooke

Is anyone else worried about the impact this would have on football season or is it just me??? LOL.

    • Go Zags

Curious. How would this impact football season?

      • Brooke

The vast majority of college football games are played on Saturdays (during the day and at night). Where I live, missing the game is considered a tragedy. Lol.

        • *Angela-Miles*

Its a holy grail here also. Football or bust lol!!! We love it! 🙂

    • Jes

Same here, we are season ticket holders and our favorite game of the year is always the last Saturday in October.

  47. Lori

I can see the reasoning behind this, however…NOPE, Halloween is October 31st!! and the best holiday in my opinion….no, no and no!

  48. Lisa

As a kid growing up in Nevada, Halloween was always a day off due to being on Nevada day. However the state has since ruined that tradition and moved Nevada day off of Halloween and to the last Monday of the month to give themselves a 3 day weekend instead. Lame-O’s

  49. Jacinda

Here for the comments… but it might impact that being the last day for NEEWOLLAH which is a big festival where I live. Other than that I’m good.

  50. Melissa Rice

Halloween is October 31st period. You can always celebrate later if you want to, there’s no need to move the holiday merely for convenience.
