Costco has sent us on an emotional roller coaster!

A few weeks ago, we shared that Costco was no longer selling their popular sheet cakes. 😭 However, after hearing that readers were seeing signs that you could once again score these tasty treats through special ordering, we sent Stetson to investigate!

In-store sign about sheet cakes

If you don’t spot new signage like above, be sure to check with the bakery, as they confirmed that you CAN special order sheet cakes! They won’t have them available in the bakery cases, but you can still order both chocolate and white sheet cakes with around a dozen design options. Awesome!

Note that this may vary by location so you’ll want to check your local Costco. Don’t have a Costco nearby? Check out how this reader made her own Costco sheet cake replacement!

here’s my thing, do that many people really eat cake? i’ll take the ice cream, thank you! ha

    • Emily

I like cake, but these big jumbo sheet cakes are only for big parties… which I am not going to/having due to COVID.

      • Klp

They freeze well! Eat some and save some for another day. Not just for big parties.

    • DealGetterRN

Yes- we do for our kids birthday- $20!!! Total steal & quite the BIG treat for our kids- they feel like they are getting big. then the little one can eat out of a huge cake when they were still mashing their cakes. Then the rest of us can eat non-baby mashed cake 😀 & the remainder I either freezer for ice cream mix-in later or bring to work & it’s gone fast!

      • Nicole (Hip Sidekick)

That sounds like a lot of FUN! Thanks for the tips!

    • Kim

Yep! I don’t like ice cream at all. And for me, the more frosting the better.

    • NissaF

      Yes! I eat the cake!

    • Lolita

I like to eat my cake and have it too. With big cakes I can do both! Lol

    • Tera B

I’m with you, Amy. I don’t eat cake, but give me alllll the ice cream! My MIL loves Costco cakes, though, and feels like it’s not a birthday celebration without one.

    • luna

Oh that’s one easy task..eat it all

    • Erin Rank

Just the frosting! I don’t like cake. I’d pick many other deserts before cake. I always get ice cream cake on my birthday 😁

    • nancypantcy

It’s a cheap filler for birthdays. I personally bought it once – never again, over sugared trash full of preservatives. Costco has much better options – tres leches, tiramisu, cheesecake

  2. Elizabeth M

It would be wrong to have one in the house just because, right? 5 people in a house, a half sheet… I mean YUM, LOL!

    • Melsoca

Ahahaha no reason needed! There’s always room for cake 😋😆

    • TiffanyRae

Nope not wrong. In this time right now, whatever makes you/us happy I say do it 🙂

  3. Carrie Mae

Yesterday the signage/littke kiosk for sheet cake orders was back up at my store 🎉

  4. Heather

I wonder if they will be the same price as before and if you still have to go in and fill out a sheet with 2 day notice?

  5. Costco Cake Lover

Is this really a savings when I’ll have to buy a whole new wardrobe after eating too much of this cake? I LOVE their cake.

    • Nicole (Hip Sidekick)

Haha! I’m right there with ya – their cake is SO good!

  6. H

I really do love their cake!!!

  7. Mel

My Costco took away the 3 dozen bakery rolls ): I’m so sad!

    • Nicole (Hip Sidekick)

Ugh. That is really sad! So sorry to hear that!

  8. Suzanne H

You can’t order them online, can you?

    • Nicole (Hip Sidekick)

I found this on the Costco website “We ask that you order at your local Costco warehouse’s bakery, as we don’t provide online cake-ordering options. Please keep in mind that you’ll need to complete an order form, and our bakers require a two-day notice—this is all to ensure that you’re getting exactly what you want!”

    • Melsa

Call your local Costco bakery. Mine is an hour away, so they faxed me an order form and I was able to fax it back to them. (Most people don’t have fax machines, though, I know!)

      • Suzanne H

        Thanks!

      • Amtricia

        E-Fax!!

  9. Kelli Krause

Love Costco cake! And yes, it’s a lot of cake but if you freeze it it lasts a long time or our favorite thing to do is mash it in a pan with leftover ice cream.

  10. Amy

This is the best news I’ve heard all day! I LOVE their cakes. Weirdly, my family does not. How is that possible??

  11. Kelly

What is the frosting like? whipped or sweet

    • Shelley

      very sweet butter cream

    • Claudia

It’s sweet, almost reminds me of cream cheese frosting except not as tangy. It also does not leave that congealed layer of fat coating the roof of your mouth and I actually eat a slice and enjoy it. I have NEVER liked store bought birthday cakes, not even as a child.

    • chantelrebecca1

Lard and sugar. The cheapest frosting three inches thick.

  12. Diane

I’ve always had the option of the buttercream or the whipped icing on the form.

    • Alikia29

When was the last time you ordered? I believe they switched to buttercream only years ago.

  13. Crystal

Thanks for the tip!! Ours Are available again with limited options just in time for a birthday!! $19.99 at our store.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      Yay! You’re welcome, Crystal! Enjoy!

  14. C

I bet enough ppl complained that they brought it back (that’s what happened with the very berry sundae)… I understand not having them in the case during the pandemic (as ppl shouldn’t have large gatherings, but being able to order makes sense (I mean after all not every family is 4 or less- look at all those crazy big families like 19 kids and counting- they had 21 ppl in their house before some of their kids got married; or other families have multiple generations in their home; or heck even ordering a cake for some essential workers as a pick me up… or of course if you don’t want to shop every week and only go once a month or every other month you could freeze it and eat it later)

    • rochellemcgee

Honestly, I think they just weren’t selling; not sure why Costco needed to make such a conspicuous fuss about why they wouldn’t be readily available and just say it would be special order only to avoid waste. It’s just ironic to me that a store that sells items in bulk would limit just this to keep people from gathering. I mean, did they also limit the number of hamburgers, hotdogs or pies you could purchase? 🙃

  15. JulieL

Now if Costco would just bring back their red velvet cake, I will be in heaven!!

  16. larsend33

The one they need to bring back is the carrot cake! Love me some CCC (Costco Carrot Cake).

  17. Feggie

That’s great news! I don’t always need a half sheet cake, but when I do, Costco is the best option!
