Did you know that some restaurants offer their surplus food at a discount to help reduce food waste? It’s true! To snag these deals, this week’s Happy Friday reader, Sarah, uses a special app on her phone.
If you’d like to save money on meals this week, here’s how Sarah does it!
“One of my favorite apps is Too Good To Go. It is designed to cut down on food waste, so local restaurants sign up to give DEEPLY DISCOUNTED food at the end of a shift, or the morning after for bakeries.
The catch is – they are mystery bags. You do not get to pick the food. But, you can score dinner for $4-$8 usually!”
“Also, this program is not in all areas. Mostly large cities. It could be great to save on vacations in large cities. I live in the Tampa area. The app is also huge in Europe. This app gives you the thrill of the deal AND the thrill of not knowing what you will get and possibly trying something new!”

Thank you for telling us about Too Good To Go! I had never heard of this app before. I found a bunch of delicious restaurants in my area participating in the program. Even in a big city, almost all the meals I saw were $8 or less, with many in the $4.99 to $6.99 range!

I searched in several major cities and suburbs across the USA. Many of the restaurants sold bread and bakery products like doughnuts, cupcakes, and bagels. Plus, there are several mom-and-pop restaurants on the app and I saw them offering everything from jerk chicken to wood-fired pizza. I also spotted grocery stores and a few major chain joints like Panera Bread, Jersey Mike’s, Dunkin’, 7-11, Peet’s Coffee, Tiff’s Treats, and Rosati’s Pizza! 🍕
The offers do seem to go fast, so make sure to check the app a little earlier in the day!

only one pizza place in our area participates and you can’t pick up until 10. Was hoping I could have a couple different options. Never heard of this before. thanks!

There are a few in our area for about 2 years. Mostly bagels and bread! Pickup is also late. Maybe more restaurants will sign up.

I used to have this, but every time I looked in the app, everything was gone. It’s been years so maybe they’ve added more restaurants since. I will have to check it out again.
Everything is sold out when I downloaded the app. Darn. Is there any other apps that are similar to this?
Yeah. Flashfood and Food for All are two others. I have not personally used them, just telling you the names of ones i’ve read articles about.
You can use google to get information like this.

I have used this app before and I heard about it coming from Europe a few years ago but at the beginning there were not much choices in my area in Sacramento county but I noticed in the last year more and more places are participating. Also the pick ups are usually late because they are about saving on food waste therefore they are bagging what they have left or did not sell that day. The pick up windows are usually tight so make sure you remember to go otherwise there will be no refund for forgetting to go. With all that being said I have gotten some really good food and a few not so good items. The mystery part of it is really fun tho!
