This new Dollar General format is popping up everywhere!

As we first reported in 2020, Dollar General is launching a new store concept called pOpshelf. These stores are designed to provide a “differentiated shopping experience” for customers in suburban areas.

By the end of February 2022, there will be 55 pOpshelf locations open across the US in addition to 25 store-within-a-store formats.

The company recently announced plans to expand the pOpshelf footprint to 100 additional stores this year, with a thousand locations planned to open by the end of 2025!

“Throughout pOpshelf’s first year, we’ve been very pleased by the customer demand for the concept’s on-trend merchandise, price points, and shopping experience. pOpshelf is an integral part of Dollar General’s innovative and long-term strategy as we continuously look for ways to best serve customers and diversify the relevant goods we offer.” – Emily Taylor, Dollar General’s executive vice president and chief merchandising officer.

The new pOpshelf stores are larger than the average Dollar General, with the goal of offering customers a less cluttered appearance and a more enjoyable shopping experience.

Prices at pOpshelf stores are rounded to the nearest dollar, with 95% of the retailer’s items priced at just $5 or less.

Wasn’t impressed. Most of what I saw was cheap junkie stuff. When shopping I think eco friendly and long term use of an Item.

I didn’t realize this was connected to DG. We randomly saw a Popshelf while out one evening and went inside. I wasn’t blown away, but there were some deals to be found. My kids got these rather large stuffies for Valentines Day from there, and I thought their $12 price tag was very reasonable for the size (we caught them with an extra 30% off). We found a few kitchen items as well. And if you sign up on their website, you get a free welcome box. I’d say there’s maybe $10 worth of freebies in there, and you have multiple types of boxes to choose from.

I sure hope they staff these stores better than they do their regualr dollar general stores. Most of our nearby stores are only staffed at most 2 employees. This is the reason their stores are such a mess, staff don’t have time to clean/stock and wait on customers. We had a brand new one open nearby. It was so nice the first month, now it is a mess.

The stores are very busy and the customers tend to move stuff around. They’ll pick up and item and carry around and they will set it down someplace else. It is very hard to find reliable part time workers who can work a crazy, varied schedule. They have a hard time finding reliable employees wo work hard and don’t mind working only 28-32 hours a week with a varied and erratic schedule. Many candidates want to work a straight 7-3PM or 9-5PM shift with weekends off. Dollar General insists that you work weekends. If the store was able to hire many extra people and offer higher wages, those costs would be passed onto the consumer. If you’re going to pay high prices, then you should shop at PUBLIX, Kohls, Michael’s, and Hobby Lobby for most of your needed items.
All I care about at Dollar General is finding what I need and not having to wait a long time at the check out. It doesn’t matter to me that the store looks like a tornado went through it. It is what it is.

I do like pOpshelf! The price points are as attractive as the home decor they offer 😊 The staff at our location is warm and very friendly!

I don’t have a Popshelf, but Dollar General is by far my biggest money saver with their huge discounts that stack within their app. I stack deals to score Toilet paper for around $3 a package of 12 rolls, always use their discounts for Coke and Pepsi products and also get my dog food there. I recommend checking it out!

Would have been helpful to mention that the service is only available in SE … I’m in California and went through this process only to discover that my closest store was in Tennessee! =p
