Ever made banana bread with sour cream? Try it out!

Love soft banana bread for breakfast recipe or as a homemade snack idea?

Baking a loaf of banana bread is my favorite way to use up overripe bananas that have been left on the counter too long! Plus, there’s nothing quite as comforting or cozy as a warm piece of banana bread from the oven. Am I right?! 😋

After sharing my favorite Nutella banana bread recipe, I’ve been wanting to try adding sour cream to banana bread. This is because I’ve heard how much sour cream can benefit the outcome of cakes and quick breads. It adds moisture without thinning the batter and creates a soft, creamy texture.

This recipe is also a breeze to make as the batter comes together in only one bowl — yay for no extra dishes to clean!

Are you a visual learner? I made a video to show how easy the process is when making banana bread with sour cream!

Hip tips when making banana bread with sour cream:

  • Use overripe bananas that are past their prime so that the bread will have that stronger, sweet banana flavor and lots of speckles.
  • This recipe is for one 1.5 quart-sized loaf pan, but feel free to double the ingredients if you are wanting to make two.
  • Jazz up the bread however you like by adding in 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts or chocolate chips before baking. And if you’d like some extra zing, try adding in lemon zest!
  • Instead of sour cream, you can use plain vanilla Greek yogurt or cream cheese!
  • If you have ripe bananas that you froze before they went bad, they’ll make an awesome addition to this banana bread. Here are some other ideas for how to use overripe bananas.

Plain vanilla Greek yogurt works wonderfully as well!

      Oh thanks for sharing!

    • Erin

      Plain Greek yogurt too.

  2. Diana

Love this so much. Thank you!!! Do you know if I can use ripe bananas that I froze before they went bad? I usually use them for smoothies but I have never tried to bake withe them. Lina- you rock!!!!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes I do that sometimes too! Great tip and thanks Diana!

  3. Bonnie

I have used this recipe for years and I always freeze my bananas for easier mixing. They thaw out quickly in a bowl of hot water, then peel and mash with a fork.

    • rochellemcgee

Huh, I didnโ€™t know you could so that. I hate feeling like I have to make something with overripe bananas RIGHT NOW before they get any worse. Thanks for the tip!

      • Angie

I peel and stick in a ziploc in the freezer. Easy peasy. Let thaw and they literally mash themselves.

    • Erin

You can freeze them peeled too. I just thaw them in my KitchenAid bowl.

    • Becky

Thatโ€™s how I always make banana bread. I never thought to peel them first. Thanks for the tip.

  4. Marinova

This is the recipe I use as well, I dump everything in the bread machine, help it mix, and set to bake. Easy way to be Best Mom Ever for a few hours. I regularly sub cream cheese, canned coconut milk or yogurt for sour cream. One of these days Iโ€™m going to sub bacon fat and see what happens ๐Ÿ˜

  5. Jen

Can this be tweaked to cook cook in an air fryer?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Ya I would think so if you used a pan that fit your machine ๐Ÿ‘

  6. mel

I have been using a similar recipe, it calls for just 1/2 c sugar vs 3/4 in this recipe. I like to add in 1/2 c chopped toasted walnuts and a few grates of nutmeg. Sooo good!

  7. Elizabeth

Just made the banana bread. I substituted cream cheese for sour cream and added chocolate chips. It was absolutely delicious!!!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh nice! Thanks for sharing ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

  8. Pat

Your recipe is very similar to mine, I use buttermilk, they both taste great. I use sour cream when I happen to have some on hand. But I always have buttermilk because I make my own!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Oh thatโ€™s a great idea – I love buttermilk for baking ๐Ÿ‘

  9. Zippy

Very similar to my recipe except I add 1 1/2 T of white vinegar and bake it in a bundt pan. It is wonderful!!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh wow – great tip! Thanks zippy!

  10. Loudflower

I just made this and my family loves it!!! Ours seemed a little too moist. Next time I will try reducing the sour cream a bit or adding more cooking time. This will be my new go-to banana bread recipe. Thank you!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh awesome and great idea! Thanks for sharing ๐Ÿ’•

  11. Tammy

I have made this and it is so good. My favorite is to slice it and toast it, or put it under the broiler for a couple of minutes to make edges crispy.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes yummy! That sounds amazing ๐Ÿ’•

  12. Kathy Reynolds

This bread is wonderful. I added streusel topping. The best Iโ€™ve ever made. So moist.

  13. SueJo

Made this yesterday and itโ€™s almost gone! Added some raisins, but otherwise followed recipe as written. Great way to use bananas that wouldnโ€™t otherwise get eaten! Keep those wonderful recipes coming!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh thanksSue Jo! And yes I agree this bread was a great way to use up those ripe bananas ๐Ÿ‘

  14. deejay5

This is my favorite new banana bread too! Thank you for all the recipes you give to us. I have used sour cream or buttermilk and it is great! Dee

  15. Amanda

I always bake my banana bread as muffins. We can enjoy half right away and toss the others in a freezer bag to have handy when the mood strikes!

  16. Anna Rose

I’ve recently been adding lemon zest to the banana bread batter with great results!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh I love that idea! Thanks for sharing Anna, Iโ€™m gonna try that ๐Ÿ‘

  17. Vironika

If you swap the sour cream for buttermilk, it will be so fluffy. Give it a try! I make it all the time, with banana frosting. My kids gobble it up!

    • MRL

Whatโ€™s is banana frosting? Sounds wonderful!

      • Vironika

        1/2 banana
        1T unsalted butter
        1/4t vanilla
1-2c p sugar. (More powder sugar makes it thicker and harden more. I prefer 1c, but try both)

Melt butter & mashed banana in microwave; add remaining ingredients. Pour over cooling bread
*If icing begins to thicken up add very small amounts of boiling water (I like to heat up about 1/4c water in microwave and have it handy when Iโ€™m getting to icing time)
This icing gives it a little extra pop! Delicious

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thanks for the suggestion!

I was excited you asked! Lol Enjoy!!

  19. Pat

That’s the same recipe I use, except for the cinnamon. Sometimes I use buttermilk if I don’t have sour cream, both are delicious!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thanks Pat!

  20. Cora

I have my own recipe I use all the time, itโ€™s very goodโ€ฆ. This just had something MAGICAL about it! I love the sour cream in it!!! I had 3 bananas that were way over ripe, which since that means sweeter, I used less white sugar. Turned out amazing! I finally had a chance to use my Mexican vanilla I got from our last trip to Mexico and that was additionally exceptional! Thanks for the share!๐Ÿ’•

    • Hipgrandma

Made it with 3 bananas and 1/2 cup sugar. Added some chopped walnuts. Baked for 60 minutes. Perfect and delicious
