Easy Grilled Ham and Cheese Pull Apart Sandwiches (Perfect Camping or Tailgating Recipe!)

Grilled Ham & Cheese Pull Apart Sandwiches

yield: 6 SERVINGS

prep time: 15 MINUTES

cook time: 20 MINUTES

total time: 35 MINUTES

Directions

1

Heat the grill to medium heat. Place the bread loaf on several sheets of foil that have been sprayed with cooking oil.

2

Using a bread knife, cut evenly spaced slices (about 12) on the loaf without cutting all the way through it.

3

In a small bowl, stir together butter, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.

4

Use a kitchen brush to coat the bread slices with butter mixture, both inside and around the outside of bread.

5

In between every other bread slice, fold and tuck in cheese and ham. You'll be creating 6 sandwiches.

6

Add a top layer of foil and seal the sides, leaving room for steam around the loaf. Grill on medium heat for about 20-25 minutes on an outdoor grill, until cheese is melted and bread toasted. You can also alternatively place by the hot coals of a campfire, or in a 350-degree indoor oven instead.

7

Remove the top layer of foil at the end to further toast the bread during the last few minutes. To serve, pull apart sandwiches and enjoy!

Try these delicious grilled ham and cheese pull apart sandwiches that can be easily compiled and toasted using foil while camping! Steal this idea and use it for entertaining friends at home or even take it along with you on your next camping adventure. Or consider making it for a unique football-watching dish this season.

This is such a versatile concept, too. I was thinking maybe a pizza one with sauce, cheese, and pepperoni would taste great. Or just swap out any other meat and cheese combo your family loves!

melted cheese sandwiches on the grill after making

Hip tips for making grilled ham and cheese pull apart sandwiches:

  • Want to melt this indoors? It can be baked in foil using your indoor oven instead. Heat the oven to 350 degrees and melt it for 20-25 minutes or until toasted. Remove the top layer of foil at the end to toast the bread during the last few minutes.
  • For a larger crowd, consider making a few of these at a time! There is room on the grill, and maybe even switch up the type of meat and cheeses.
  • If you do have leftovers, store them in the fridge and reheat them in the air fryer! I did this and it was way yum. 😋

I grilled this while the kids were swimming and they were happy to enjoy them outside as a fun lunch idea. I love how the cheese melts with the buttery mustard mixture to create this fantastic tasting crusty texture.

My mom has been making these forever- we call them poker sandwiches. She uses foil sheets to wrap individual rolls, and you can heat up one or two or all of them as needed. My mouth is watering looking at the pictures- it’s such a delicious combination. Extra cheese is always the best. Try adding bread and butter pickles too.

    • Lina D

YES to the pickles – sounds yummy! Thanks Julie 🙂

We make this in the oven and it’s yummy!! It’s the best with melted butter and everything bagel seasoning on top.

I have tried the recipe for Easy Grilled Ham and Cheese Pull-Apart Sandwiches with ghee instead of using butter. Ghee butter is a safer oil than other butter or olive oil, etc. I love ghee’s flavor and ghee’s food safety.

I make these frequently and they are so yummy! One thing I do differently which makes them super fast to put together is slice the bread in half the long way (hot dog bun style) so you have two long halves. Slather the sauce on both halves, slap down the meat and cheese on one half, then put the halves together. You can then slice it into individual slices and grill or bake, or wait to slice until it’s done baking. We like to set out additions like banana peppers, shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, pickles, etc. so everyone can customize their sandwiches after baking. So fun for parties!

    • Trish (Hip Sidekick)

Happy to hear these have been a hit, arie! Such a great idea for parties! 🎉 Thanks for sharing how you like to make them! 💞
