It’s NEVER too early to start eating pumpkin recipes! 🎃

If you’re a fan of all things pumpkin, then you’ve gotta whip up these chocolate chip pumpkin spice cake squares that require only THREE simple ingredients and just a few minutes to prepare!

They’re perfect for an afternoon treat with coffee, an easy Halloween or Thanksgiving dessert, or a simple recipe to keep on hand when you need something sweet in a hurry.

Adding a can of pumpkin purée or pumpkin pie filling to a box of cake mix has been my favorite go-to method for quick pumpkin treats for many years. It creates a treat that is perfectly moist and truly delicious!

This time, I’ve added 1/2 a cup of chocolate chips to the top of the pan before baking in a 9″ x 13″ baking dish. The end result is a dense yet soft snack cake, which I cut up into squares and serve right from the pan.

Do I use pumpkin puree or pumpkin pie mix? Honestly, I have tried both ways, and it’s just a matter of preference. The pumpkin pie mix yields a sweeter dessert, while the unsweetened puree is a lower-sugar route. They are both great, but we may prefer the pumpkin pie version a little more.

Check out these easy variations for cake mix pumpkin bars:

  • Add nuts: Stir in chopped pecans or walnuts for a little crunch.
  • Use white chocolate: Swap some or all of the chocolate chips for white chocolate chips.
  • Make it gluten-free: Use a gluten-free yellow cake mix instead. Add 1½ teaspoons cinnamon + ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice. It’ll still give you that cozy fall flavor.
  • Make them festive: Add fall-colored sprinkles or seasonal baking chips for Halloween or Thanksgiving.
  • Go nuts for fall: Add pecans plus chocolate chips for a pumpkin-pecan version.
  • Serve them warm: A warm bar with a scoop of vanilla ice cream is an easy fall dessert upgrade!
