Smoothie Freeze tips and recipe

If you love smoothies for breakfast or an afternoon snack but don’t always have the time to prepare them, then you are gonna love this post! Follow along as I share with you the best way to make your favorite smoothies in batches and then freeze them for a quick and healthy meal or snack.

Although smoothies tend to separate and spoil quite quickly in the fridge, they freeze wonderfully! Make a smoothie with the fruit and veggies your family enjoys and then pour the mixture into ice cube trays (or silicon muffin trays work great too!) and freeze overnight. Whenever you’re in the mood for a smoothie, place a few frozen cubes in a cup on the counter and in about an hour or so, you’ll have a delicious defrosted smoothie (you won’t even need to put it in the blender again)! I especially love to whip up a batch of smoothies to freeze when I have produce that is getting really ripe and is really close to going bad.

What protein powder do you like?

    • Bonnie

Kimberly – If you are interested in trying a protein powder I use – I would love to send you a sample. Just send me an email at bonbon_48471@yahoo.com. Thanks

    • Rebecca

Kimberly, I really like Trader Joes Soy Protein powders (vanilla or soy) because they have no added sweetener so they don’t make a fruit smoothie overly sweet. I also use only one scoop most of the time because it is plenty of protein but doesn’t make the shake too gritty.

  2. Andrea

This is an awesome idea. About how many cubes from an ice cube tray is one serving?

  3. Denise G.

Awesome! I have to leave for work at 6am and my little guy usually likes yogurt on our drive. But I’d like to mix it up with smoothies. I’ll have to prep these ahead of time and solve that time crunch issue.

  4. Maria

This is AWESOME! I only have smoothies on the weekend because I don’t want to wake up my family in the morning with blender noise (I leave my house @ 5:30 AM). Thank you for sharing these great tips.

  5. mrl

Lina – I do the same. However, I pour them into Ball brand plastic freezer jars, 8 oz. size. I fill them halfway, put the lid on, and stick them in the fridge. Every morning I stick one in my daughter’s school lunch. By lunch time they’ve melted to smoothie consistency.

p.s. I only pour halfway because that’s how much she drinks. You could fill to the fill line and it works out fine – I have before.

  6. Cassandra

Thank you so much for this idea Lina! I love smoothies but either my fruit goes bad before I can use it or I don’t have time to make them. This is so helpful.

  7. Heather C.

Omg, brilliant! I dove smoothies but don’t make them very often because of the mess it makes in the kitchen. This solves that problem… Yay!

  8. Jennifer

This is a great idea! My smoothies are usually very vegetable based. I don’t use much fruit to sweeten so I won’t bore you all with the details. I do make berry smoothies for the kids though. This is perfect because I can do my super green cubes and just add a few of mine to the kids berry cubes. Thanks Lina!

  9. Natalie

What a great idea! Thanks for this!

  10. Amy

Another idea that works for us to make extra and pour it into popsicle molds. My kids will have them for breakfast or snack and its so much healthier than an actual popsicle.

    • Faith

      I do that too!!

      • Debbie

        I do this too

    • Jenn

I do this as well. Sometimes we put yogurt with fruit pieces in the molds. My daughter won’t eat store brand popcicles

  11. Katie

I save them in ikea Popsicle holders and give my picky 2 yr old “smoothie pops” in frozen Popsicle form. It totally works to get more food in him and I make them with yogurt, berries and whole milk.

  12. Lory

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS!

    • Beth

      Thanks I used your link

Never thought of this! I drink a smoothie daily. Vanilla Coconut milk, cup of frozen berries, plexus 96 vanilla protein powder and 1 stick of plexus slim!!! Yumm yumm yumm! My whole house loves it but hubby says he wishes he could make one in the am before he leaves for work but the house is sleeping. Hope this works out for him 🙂 thanks so much!

I blend a big batch and then pour individual servings into sandwich size Ziplocs. Label and freeze them flat. When I wake up in the morning, I pull one out of the freezer and lay it on the counter. By the time I’m ready to go to work (30-45 mins), it’s the perfect slushy consistency and it’s easy to pour into a cup! Either dump from the top of snip a corner of the bag.

  15. Julie

I use my son’s take n toss cups with the lids to do this. I just pour the leftover smoothie into a few of these small cups and place into the freezer. When he wants one he just sets it on the counter, usually at breakfast and comes back in an hour to two to ask if it’s done yet. He’s 4 and loves smoothies!

  16. DeLisa

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this post!!! I will most definitely be doing this

  17. Mary

I freeze individual ingredients (spinach, kale, sweet potato , carrots, watermelon, pineapple, strawberries ect) in ice cube trays pre blended. Then I toss them in a quick smoothie with a banana and juice. That way my kids don’t see the veggies go in. As long as it stays pink they will drink it.

    • Jamie

This is a great idea!! thanks

  18. Christie

How funny is this that I was just looking at Pinterest for make ahead smoothie recipes! Have a new bullet and want to get my smoothies on…! Thanks for sharing!

  19. Jessica

How long do they stay fresh in the freezer? Also how many cubes do you put in one drink? I’m looking for quick and easy breakfast ideas for my dad that he can take on his way to work.

  20. Sara

I started substituting cottage cheese in the place of protein powder. No sugar yet still protein count.

  21. Jodi

I am looking for a protein powder that will mix well into a smoothie without changing the flavor completely???
