A state stimulus check might be headed your way in 2022.

Some states are providing economic relief via tax rebates.

Though the federal government probably won’t send stimulus checks in 2022, you might be receiving some help from your state. In the latest attempt to combat inflation and stave off a recession, well over a dozen states have decided to send income tax rebate checks to their residents. Most of these refunds are for small amounts (so don’t get too excited) but we do have the scoop on who qualifies and when to expect a payment!

Find your state below and see if you qualify for a stimulus payment:

We don’t qualify due to my husband’s severance received last year. We could really use the money as he’s still unemployed.

    • julie

I am sorry to hear about your husband

    • Chellybelle77

I know its cold comfort right now but if his income is below the threshold for 2020 you will be able to get it on your tax return next year, I’m sorry I know its rough I have 3 kids at home who don’t qualify because they are 17 and up. They’ve really overlooked an entire population of dependents. I’m not saying they all deserve 1200 like adults who have to care for a whole household, but a lot of these kids are college students and young adults who work and support themselves but don’t claim taxes because their parents still claim them

      • Dawn

I agree. My 18 year old is still living at home but is a college student and works full time at a day care. She has bills to pay with her own money, and her being out of work has put those bills on me. I am surprised that these college dependents were cut out of the deal when they will easily get that money back into the economy quickly unlike many whom have said they will be putting their stimulus into savings.

        • Jen

I agree too. My son is a college student too, paying all his own bills, paying for school out of pocket & working. He was not only laid off but his financial aid was changed also (school having rough time financially too I guess.) So now I’m subsidizing him plus my own bills. I don’t think that college dependents got a fair deal this time.

  2. jen13289

Not yet, but my friend got hers over a week ago

    • shop4mybabies

weird because the first payments weren’t processed until Saturday the 11th (two days ago)

      • Xiomara

And still sitting in account for a week “pending”

  3. Angie

    I received mine today

    • Paris176

Is it pending? Or already deposited? And did yall get it fast cause you used a prepaid 2 day faster card?

  4. Gerry

Hi and thank you for this info. I wanted to know if people that receive supplemental ( SSI) will recieve the $1200?

    • sharon099

I heard on Suze Orman’s Women and Money podcast that someone on SSI will get the $1200 and it won’t affect their eligibility going forward. Yay!

    • riss

I read that if you receive SS checks, you are automatically qualified, unless you are being claimed as a dependent by your adult child. Not sure if SSI and SS checks are the same, though.

  5. Christina

I’m in California and we have not gotten it yet. Maybe only people in the East coast are getting them first?

    • Christopher

Same here, and I have a pending payment of 1700, but shud be either 3400 or 2200 depending if we get the 1200 for my fiance, which whom I claimed on my taxes.

      • Barton

You arent going to get money for any dependents you claim above 17years old. whats worse is they cant get the stimulus money if they have been claimed by someone else. This is a loophole. My fiance was very affected by this this year.

      • Clair

This is the same thing that happened to us, we only received $1700, and we claimed two kids and he claimed me as a dependent..so I’m not sure

        • Karen

If you didn’t work you won’t get a check. If one of the kids was 17 you won’t get credit for him or her.

        • Jeremiah2911

Oh no, this is what our taxes looked like last year too..definitely not how I thought that math would work out!

      • marie

You wont get any money for an adult dependent, you wont get any money for him. You will get 1200 plus 500 for any child under the age of 17.

        • Detra

My nephew got am email from his bank stating he will get his today. He is 20 and lives with his mom and goes to college. Works at publix so not sure if he even made enough to file his own taxes. I would try anyway for these older college kids. Go to the IRS website and fill out the non filer section and if not try the regular.

        • Shoshone

I got my 1200 for me but not for my 8 year old n I claim her on my taxes n she also is disabled

    • RWinters

I live in WA State and mine arrived Monday April 13th

  6. Christopher Shiman

Just wondering, I claimed my two kids both under 17, and my fiance. I know I get 1200 and 500 for each child, do I get another 1200 for my fiance as well? Which would be 3400 all together for my stimulus money

    • barton

kids yes, fiance no. Neither can they file and claim their 1200 independently if you claimed them

    • Karen

Rumors abound, but the way I understand it, they will look at the child’s age last tax year, not currently. It’s determined the same way as the child tax credit. The bill refers to an IRS regulation about qualifying for the tax credit (and age 16 is the last year it can be claimed) . My son turned 17 in January, so he was 16 for the entire tax year and I received the child tax credit. I think I’ll get a payment for him. I really hope it works out this way…

      • Ella

I don’t believe this is correct. If your child turns 17 during 2020, you will not get any money for him/her. They are basing off your previous year return for income only to see who is eligible. They can do the calculation to figure if he was 16 last year, he is 17 this year and not eligible. This is an “advance” of a tax credit for tax year 2020. If your child turns 17 in 2020, they are not eligible for the child tax credit this year and therefore would not be eligible to receive the $500 stimulus either.

        • Sparklemomma

In reply to Ella. My son will turn 17 in 2020 and I received the $500 for him.

          • Ella

Thanks for replying, that’s good to know because everything I’ve read said otherwise, but it has been very confusing seeing different people with different results so far. I have a teen that is turning 17 soon, so it will be interesting to see if the results remain the same for me & I hope they don’t “adjust” for the credit for the 17 year old when we file taxes next year.

  7. Crazyred511

I saw mine pending in my bank account since Thursday evening. It is to be released on the 15th.

    • Kathy

Mine has been pending since the 13th as well. How do you know it will release on the 15th. Is there a special site to find out. I called my bank and they did not know.

  8. Amy in CO

It’s not right that my 17 and 21 year olds will receive nothing because they were both dependents last year. My 21 year old is now out of school and on his own and could really use it and my 17 year old is expensive! (:

    • shop4mybabies

we have a 22 year old and 20 year old college student that we fully support in same boat. i understand it’s a huge sum of money for our country and that not everyone should receive it but wondering how that rules out broke college kids.

    • Amy

My sister in college got hers but she filed taxes so maybe that’s the difference.

      • TJ

Not if you claim them as dependents. My 18 and 20yo both work and pay/file taxes but we claim them as dependents because our 18yo is a hs senior and our 20yo is finishing up his sophomore year of college. I mean it’s great that we got $500 for each of our younger kids but the oldest two are the most expensive.

    • Courtney

So if your 21 year old files their own return and claims themself as a dependent for 2019 they may still be eligible for the $1200.

  9. Brandonnlenee

Mine is memo posted for 04/15.

  10. Michelle

Our family’s check is pendi g and will be posted for 3900.00

  11. Diane

I’m in North Dakota, and there’s no sign of it here yet. But, I’m grateful it’s coming!

  12. Kate

The federal government didn’t take into consideration that it’s more expensive to live some places versus others. Our family didn’t qualify but now we could use the money. $75k a year in the midwest goes a lot further than in San Francisco!

    • aimee

Exactly! My rent alone is $3000/month, for a 600 sq ft apartment! While I am truly grateful for any kind of assistance during this difficult time, $1200 doesn’t even cover half my rent while those in other parts of the country may have a bit extra after paying all their living expenses to “leisurely” stimulate the economy.

      • Ashley

It is not the feds fault that your rent is so high and so are your state taxes. You do not deserve more than others simply because of those reasons. If you want a lower cost of living, move.

        • Robin

Well put. We moved to a lower cost of living area 3 years ago. Our house literally cost half of what it would have been where we used to live. Our entire property tax is lower than just the school tax there too. Life is all about choices.

          • Coridg

I have to agree. People choose to live in a place that’s higher cost of living . Thus, it shouldn’t be a factor in the stimulus check. Debt also shouldn’t be in my opinion . That is a choice also even if it is for school. You choose debt now for a better life later with school that’s just how it is.

      • Sr

A lot people are moving cheap places. Good life is over . A pandemic’s fault

      • Karen

I agree with you, Aimee. I am fortunate enough to work for the state in Massachusetts so I am still working trying to ensure that folks impacted by this crisis tb get healthcare. Nonetheless, Boston is also very expensive, so I feel you. Why would anyone expect you to walk away from job/family/whatever keeps you were you are to find a cheaper cost of living. Ridiculous. Stay well.

        • rochellemcgee

Not ridiculous, it’s life. I moved from NoVa to Florida so I could afford children and live in a home larger than 1000sq ft without shared walls…away from a high income career and all my friends. Begrudging people in locales with lower costs of living is ridiculous. We all pay taxes.

          • Jennifer

I LOVE NoVa, great schools, jobs all over, even in a bad economy, city life, but farms just a little further west. Worth the cost of living for us (plus, we have found that NoVa/DC pay reflects that). Just another point of view.

        • Rebecca

No one expects you to walk away from that, just saying if you want to complain about prices of living, you have options. You’re not owed any more than any one else. Obviously it would be impossible to cater the stimulus to every individual need.

        • Robin

Life is about choices. Don’t make a choice and then complain about it.

    • OG SG

Nor did they take into account debt and stuff. I am a single person making over the threshold but I live in a higher cost of living area and pay the equivalent of a second mortgage in student loan payments, but I don’t qualify.

      • Rebecca

Hopefully you got some relief for a few months with your student loans, but you can’t expect to get more because you are in debt.🤷

      • Robin

Student loans, mortgages, cost of living area… choices we all make. We all live with the consequences of our choices.

    • Melanie

No kidding. They need to adjust taxes and income thresholds for folks living in the bay area…..so expensive here….

  13. Leslie

East coast here & nothing yet. I don’t think there’s a science to who gets it 1st, as we filed our taxes in Feb & already got our Tax return. How are people seeing pending check?

    • peretz12

I remember reading somewhere that they’re trying to process payments for the lowest income people first. Not sure if it’s working out like that though in reality..

    • Heather

Question, this would only apply to full time employees right? Not part time
Also, I’m in Michigan and haven’t received anything yet (I’m assuming my husband would get it at least- and we have three kiddos)

      • Carrie O.

My understanding is that if (for example) you are married filing jointly and fall within the income guidelines then you and your spouse should each get $1,200 plus $500 for each kid 16 and under. You don’t have to work full time to qualify. I’m a stay at home mom and my husband and I will each get a check.

    • Paris

I think most of them use prepaid 2 day faster cards also my bank dont show pending deposits so maybe ours will be in our acct.tomm.since banks don’t credit to accounts over the weekend…

  14. peretz12

So this is kinda off subject but has anyone had to wait longer for their federal tax returns this year? I received my state refund 2 weeks ago but my federal still shows “processing” when I check the IRS website. I filed my taxes March 10th!

    • Lisa

pertez12 Don’t feel bad we also received our state back two weeks ago but still no federal and it is not even showing up on the irs site as being received. We had to mail them in due to them being rejected for the wrong AGI being submitted even though it is the AGI that was sent to me by the irs. It’s been six weeks since they were mailed and still no confirmation of even being received. I think that they will be delayed even longer now with these payments going out right now.

      • Carissa

We were required to mail ours in due to a health care adjustment. I mailed it on February 12th, and it still doesn’t show as received. I tried calling the IRS Center, and they couldn’t even give info. They said 90% of the government is closed. Don’t expect a refund anytime soon.

        • Carissa

Mine was even supposed to be direct deposit.

        • Sarah

I had to do that too they took another 500 something my refund barely was left with anything

    • Karen

I filed the first week in Feb, and it was 10 days — would have been shorter, but I entered my last year’s AGI wrong and they asked for a correction.

      • Carissa

Was yours an efile, though? Paper returns take way longer. It’s taking months this year.

    • Robin

I got mine in 3 weeks. I filed mid February, e-filed and direct deposit.

    • Mary

My parents filed in January and they are still waiting for their Tax return check to arrive. No, they didn’t do direct deposit. We do know it was received.

  15. Michele

Got ours in NY on the 3rd and my daughters is pending to the 15th

  16. Annie

Has anyone who files as injured spouse received their portion?

  17. Annie

Has anyone who files injured spouse received their portion?

    • Anonymous

I have a pending deposit for exactly half what it should be for our family.. I am wondering if that’s it!? Or if my husband will receive a separate deposit with him and 1.5 kids because If not I’m not sure why only half..? (I have filed injured spouse so I’m assuming this is the “half” I’m entitled to which includes $750 for our kids (we have 3 so that’s only half the amount expected..?) says if you owe taxes that will not affect anyone but back child support will/can … I don’t know what our balance is but I can’t imagine exactly half of the stimulus amount..?

      • Holly

I filed injured spouse as I do every year, and they took our entire $3900 check for his arrears.

        • Annie

That’s horrible! I’m guessing they are doing the same with ours. I’m filing an additional injured spouse form now and my husband is appealing it with the child support office.

  18. MrsMichelle922

Mine is scheduled to post the 15th.

  19. Shonna

Unfortunately we owe the IRS this year so as soon as we get it, it will be sent right back to them 😢

  20. Melissa

If bank account is overdrawn with fees, can they take stimulus money?

    • Tricia

Probably if it’s going into an account with negative balance.

    • marie

If it is direct deposited into that account yes but they aren’t necessarily “taking” it. If you have a negative 200 balance and you add 1200 to it then your balance would be 1000. That’s math, not the bank thinking “we’re taking your check”

    • Paris

Yes, the banks will always get theirs. When your deposit hit they will subtract your overdrawn amount.

    • J.H.509

You can always call the bank and try and see if they can at least reverse the OD fees considering the situation. They do have the authority to at least do that. The manager just has to override it. At this moment in time the bank should be trying to help their customers by providing this service.

  21. Momma 3 RN

    East coast here. Nothing yet.

  22. Anna

What else can reduce the amount you receive?

Hopefully someone can help me with this one. Can’t find any other info online.

I called my bank today and they told me I have a pending deposit of $1700 from the IRS. I filed married jointly and both hubby and i made less than $150,000 combined both in 2018 & 2019. We have two kids as well under 12. I used the estimation calculator and saw we should be getting $3400 anyway, I wanted to know what factors can reduce the amount? I know child support but that doesn’t apply to us. That’s the only one I’ve read so far that can have an impact on the amount you could receive.

    • AL77

That’s really odd. Sounds like you should have gotten more!

    • RosieReal

By any chance, did you and your husband split your refund into two separate accounts? If so, perhaps the $1700 is in another account? Since what you have pending is exactly half, it seems a reasonable deduction.

      • Anna

No we share the same bank account. Always do our taxes jointly. Strange. I’m assuming it’s going in half and then the other half will come in. Idk lol

        • Ishia

I only received 1200 when I have 2 qualifying children I don’t understand why I haven’t received the 500 for each child I don’t owe taxes or child support

  23. Lu

I’m also very disappointed that many high school and most college students are being excluded. Of course my 17 year old high school senior is a dependent! He doesn’t cost any less to support this year than last year, in fact the opposite because he lost his spring income as a soccer referee, his summer job won’t happen, and college expenses are fast approaching. He paid taxes himself last year as an independent contractor too. It’s ridiculous that they don’t work out a way to fairly assist families with this student population in the stimulus package.

    • Robin

I’m in the same boat with a 20 year old college student. There’s a whole group of dependents 17+ that weren’t considered in this bill. I did read some representatives are trying to amend this or create something else that addresses this group of citizens.

Either way, I’m just thankful we are getting something. Even though in the grand scheme of things, they are just giving citizens back taxes we already paid in anyway.

  24. Lisa

What I don’t understand is how the same payment can be made to a family living in the middle of the Country and one living in say N.Y. OR CA. Clearly the cost of living is not the same!

    • Ashley

Because that is the fair and equal thing? This is a federal stimulus package- your STATE is charging you such high taxes. Talk to them about resolving that issue and then you can enjoy more of your stimulus next time

      • Rebecca

Exactly! You have choices in your life as well, stop complaining about yours.

    • Amber

It’s also based on income at that. Rich and poor people can live in any state regardless of cost of living ….

  25. E

Why so many complaints??? Be glad they are doing at least *something*. My in-laws live overseas and their country is shut down and my father in law can’t work right now and they have no savings. Fortunately, we were able to send them money to cover their bills, which we have never done in 10 years of marriage, so they are ok. Be thankful we have systems like unemployment and the option for our govt to give stimulus checks. We haven’t received ours as no way I would ever give my bank info to the IRS, so we wait for a paper check, just like with tax returns.

    • Cristine

I agree with you E. Too many ungrateful people complaining about a handout. Like we tell our 3 year old, you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit. 🙂

      • Kim

Lol, at your comment of “You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit”. I have told my children that since they were at a very young. They are in their twenties now and I still use the phrase. I just found it funny that someone else also uses it. Thanks for the smile, lol.

    • akajulz

E The IRS can find your bank account without you providing any information to them. I know this because they attempted to take money out of my checking account for money that I DID NOT owe them. I got $225 in bank fees due to overdrafts and another $200 fee that is agreed upon between the bank and the IRS. When I finally got it resolved they said too bad about the $425 and would not refund me any of the fees.

      • J.H.509

Call your bank and ask them to reverse the OD fees. It can be done especially at a time like this.

    • Robin

People on here are complaining about the ramifications of the choices they made… cost of living, student loans, debt, etc. I don’t get it.
I’m not sure when accountability went out the window and entitlement kicked in.
We should all be grateful the government is giving us back money we already paid in. Aside from possibly on tax refunds, that doesn’t happen too often.

  26. Sarah

    Got mine. I’m in Utah.

  27. riss

My son is getting the check. He makes below the cut-off AGI. We are not qualified to get any amount, and we have to pay a few thousands to federal. Eeekkk!

  28. Carrie O.

Some Senators have introduced a bill called the All Dependents Count Act that would fix the issue of children/dependent adults over the age of 16 who currently won’t receive a check. If passed these other dependents would also receive a $500 check. You would have to google to find the specifics but it seems like this issue is trying to be addressed since the original stimulus bill excluded a lot of these people.

  29. Banker

I work for a bank. Supposedly, those that receive direct deposit, should have their money by Wednesday, the 15th- AS LONG AS THE IRS HAS YOUR CORRECT BANK ACCOUNT INFO ON FILE. I know there are many, many doctors, nurses, EMT’s, and others who are dealing with patients who have the Covid-19, however, I feel like us bankers are very unappreciated right now. We are answering phone calls from the same folks multiple times a day wanting to know if their money is in their accounts yet- and sadly, it isn’t the ones who have been laid off or completely lost their job calling about the stimulous check- we are trying to conduct all of our business at the drive-thru’s, which includes opening new accounts and printing debit cards, and our loan officers are working tirelessly, including overtime and weekends, to get these Paycheck Protection Plan Loans closed and funded. We are run ragged right now, so please, if you can, use online banking and telephone banking to verify account balances. Shout out to my fellow bankers out there!!
P.S.- Those that received their stimulous check over the weekend or today, probably do business with a credit union. They do NOT have to follow the same ACH posting guidelines as a bank. They are NCUA, and a bank is FDIC. We post items by the date on the ACH file, and we do not hold those funds.

Thank you so much for Everything you do. I just have a quick question regarding this site. It says to enter your most personal information ℹ️ through this site then you click on free file. How are we to know this is a safe site to enter our most personal information into regarding stimulus checks? There are 3rd parties, hackers etc.
Phishing is everywhere & this site can guarantee that it is completely safe? How?
      Need to know. Thank you

      • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Yes, your internet session and transmission of your “Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info information” will be encrypted in a secure environment. This site is a 3rd-party site that the IRS has partnered with. It is completely safe.

    • TJ

Thank you for all that you do!! I’ll be praying that appreciative people come your way.

And yes we got ours on Saturday and we are with a credit union.

  30. Tia

I’m curious among other we received 2900 we are married with 2 children under the age of 10 didn’t make more then 45,000 last year the calculator said 3400 but it’s showing up 2900 that means we are missing a child credit we also claimed both kids on our taxes I’m not sure how that number came to be? Anyone else solve the issue ? Friends with the same household and income received the 3400…

    • Rebecca

We haven’t gotten ours yet, but a little worrisome to see so many people (with clean cut cases) saying they are receiving the wrong amount. We should get $3400 as well, guess we shall see😬

  31. Kim

If bank rejected my income tax and sent me a check, how Will i get my stimulus?

  32. Heidi

  33. Cristine

Nothing yet for us, we’re in Texas.

  34. jvianney33

My son’s family received half of what they’re supposed to get. Weird.

    • Ashley

Your son AGI is likely above income limits and is phased out.

  35. Lisa

I haven’t got mine yet I live in Joplin mo Im on SSI and so are my adult son and adult daughter and my husband hasn’t work since 2017
He stays home and take care of me

  36. Tonia

Nope. We have to pay quarterly taxes so they dont have our bank info so we will have to wait for a check. 🤷‍♀️

    • Grandma Cathy

You can go to the link and enter bank info.

  37. Lisa

I get SSI and my daughter and son also get SSI
My husband hasn’t worked since 2017
Well they put us as married for the stimulus check and can it go into my account that my disability goes into

  38. Kim

Does anybody know…I you are not eligible for the stimulus check, would your 10-year old still get $500 or not?

    • George

Kim, No your 10yr old son will not get $500, he follows you as far as taxes etc since he is your dependent. You don’t qualify, neither will your son.

      • Ashley

This is for George and Kim. She may still get a portion of the $500 for her 10 year old son if her income does not completely phase it out.

  39. Hilary

Our credit union has been showing, since last week, our deposit as pending for tomorrow.

    • Mirela

Our credit union too. I’m in MI.

  40. RosieReal

My husband and I filed jointly for 2019. We already received our refund and had it deposited into two separate accounts. My question is if the stimulus payment will also be sent to both accounts?

  41. countrygal

Didn’t get mine yet, I’m in the midwest.

  42. KimPossible

Yes. Just posted this Morning. Northern Ca.

  43. Jen

I need advice!!! My ex husband claimed my daughter as a dependent in 2018 without permission-(it was part of our agreement, that every other year we each get to claim her, but I need to sign an irs form to give him permission) However- he filed without the form, and caused both of us to get audited in 2018. I haven’t amended my 2018 taxes yet due to illness-but on my 2019 taxes I get to claim her as a dependent- *I’m in NY *I also have a 19 yr old son in college *My ex husband & new wife earn over $250,00 yr together- My question is should I just file my 2019 taxes now-and then file my 2018 taxes after, since as noted by IRS website, until full faculty is back at work, any mailed in taxes won’t be processed. Problem is my 2017 taxes has an old bank account #, & I don’t trust him not to file with her as a dependent without permission, she is 16 -will be 17 in October- I don’t want to lose the $500 stimulus for her & wait for a paper check, since my bank account is different

    • juma

Jen sorry about this issue I know it’s stressful. If you look at the IRS website they have a section that is open/ plan to open later this week for anyone that needs to update their bank account info. Here’s the link from their site. I would keep checking to see when it opens up and you can give them the correct info… in the meantime read it to see exactly what all you will need so you can have it ready to upload. I assume this is going to get a lot of traffic when it does open. Good luck and stay safe everyone. https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payments

      • Jen

Reply to Juma: Thank you so much!

    • Marie

I’m a little confused with everything you’re saying, but I have a similar custody agreement where we each claim our daughter every other tax year. There’s really no telling who will get the $500 for her since there hasn’t been any specifics yet as to if the feds are going to go off of 2018 or 2019 taxes. And sorry if I misunderstand what you’re saying, but if you get to claim your child for 2019, then shouldn’t your ex have gotten to claim your child for 2018? Sounds like you shouldn’t have tried claiming in a year that wasn’t yours to claim. Regardless, I’d def check out that website that another poster suggested. I too heard it was going to go live sometime this week. Hope it works out for you!

      • Jen

In reply to Marie: Thank you for answering-(my post was a little confusing) I had originally left out that in 2017, was the last year my son could be claimed as a dependent-& my ex had been claiming my son for 10 years, and I was claiming my daughter – However, when my ex realized he could no longer claim my son- in 2018 he just claimed my daughter, without speaking with me- he’s impossible- I only found that out when I was audited b/c we both claimed her-he was very sneaky about it-So, to lessen my stress during my illness, I amended my taxes, & signed the form for him to claim her in 2018- So, for 2019 taxes I get to claim my daughter (I also had a restraining order issued for 2 years in 2018-tells u what kind of person I’m dealing with)

  44. Cherrill

We received a check, we haven’t even filed our taxes yet.

    • Sunny

IRS went off your 2018 taxes then

  45. Lisa

We filed our taxes as married filing jointly & have a 5 yr old daughter, but I’m a stay at home mom. We are under the income threshold, would we get $1,700 or $2,900?

    • Rebecca

      $2,900👍

    • Scruffybean718

As long as your household income is under the amount, you will get $1200 per adult and $500 per child.

  46. Mike

I am surprised that people are surprised that dependent children 17 years & older are not considered valid dependent children. This has always been the case. For some stupid reason, the IRS thinks once a child hits 17, they are either independent or the cost to take care of them drops significantly.

This is the same eligiblity as the dependent child care (not the child care credit). Prior to last year, it was a shock when my daughter turned 17 and she no longer qualified. At that time, I think the child credit was $1,000 or $1,500. in any case, that means that my taxes automatically increased by the $1,000/$1,500. If you have a child that turns 17 this year and you qualify for the dependent child credit (I think its $2,000) now, change your withholding because next year when you file, your taxes will increase by $1,500 (last year tax’s code changed it so people only get $500 credit for those whose children are 17 & older) meaning if you normally get a refund, it will be reduced by $1,500. If you normally pay, you will pay $1,500 more.

I am shocked that no one has made this a big deal. The IRS should increase the age limit to at least 20. Most kids are still dependents of parents meaning we take care of them financially. Doesn’t matter they go away for college.

Whoever thought that parents don’t deserve the child credit once their child turns 17 is an idiot. Probably some ultra rich congressman who has no clue what middle America goes through in raising children. They cost a lot of money as you know!

    • Marie

The IRS is all wonky when it comes to young adults. They phase out the credits, but make it ridiculously hard for young adults in college to truly be independent from their parents. In my early twenties, I was putting myself through college, working, and raising a child with absolutely no financial help from my parents. Because I still shared an address with my parents, even though I paid half of the household bills, I was still considered dependent on my parents and did not qualify for certain tax credits when I filed, including the earned income credit for my daughter. I think that all finally phased out by the time I was 23 or 24, but it’s absolutely ridiculous how asinine the rules are.

  47. Myshea groves

Me and my husband filed jointly and we filed injured spouse cause he owes back child support. We have 2 children together will I still receive mine and our kids portion?

  48. Terri

I’m in Pennsylvania, and I haven’t gotten it yet.

  49. catmom

I’m in a Chicago area suburb. Did not receive it yet

  50. sbeckett

I got married last year and haven’t filed my taxes for 2019 yet. Considering my name has changed, will this affect my stimulus? My banking info has t changed.
