The walmart savings catcher program will require walmart pay - Walmart Savings Catcher App

Shop at Walmart? 🛒

If you’re a Walmart shopper, their Savings Catcher program and Walmart Pay are two great tools to ensure that you’re not paying too much for your purchases and can pay (and get receipts) easily. Specifically, Walmart’s Savings Catcher compares your receipts to advertised prices from top stores in your area and if it finds a lower advertised price, you’ll get the difference back in a Walmart eGift card!

Within one week after picking up your groceries, just enter your Walmart Grocery receipt into the Savings Catcher section on the Walmart mobile app. Your rewards are automatically transferred to a Savings Catcher eGift Card each time they’re earned, and the eGift Cards are automatically saved to your Walmart.com account. You can then use the rewards to shop both online or in-store.

NEW Changes to Savings Catcher…

The walmart savings catcher program will require walmart pay - Savings Catcher Walmart eGift Card

Effective October 29th, 2018, Savings Catcher changed their accepted payment methods and Walmart Pay is now the only way to submit your receipt to Savings Catcher. Due to this change, the ability to scan paper receipts within the app or submit via desktop is now discontinued. However, this change will allow you to both submit and spend your Savings Catcher rewards within the same Walmart Pay experience.

The walmart savings catcher program will require walmart pay - Walmart Pay at checkout

Here’s how Savings Catcher works now:

Rather than scanning paper receipts using the Savings Catcher scanner after paying, you’ll simply create an eReceipt using the Walmart Pay scanner when paying. Here’s how:

  1. Enroll in Walmart Pay.
  2. Use Walmart Pay at checkout to create an eReceipt for submission:
    • Open Walmart Pay and select credit, debit, or gift card.
    • Use Walmart Pay to scan the QR code at the register to generate your eReceipt.
  3. Tap “Submit Receipt” directly from your Walmart Pay confirmation page or from your Savings Catcher dashboard on the Walmart app

What are the benefits of using Walmart Pay?

  • One touch submissions: Submit your eReceipt before even leaving the store!
  • Save time and space: Reduce wallet and purse hassles when you turn your phone into your secure mobile wallet.
  • Store your purchase history: Find your past purchases in your Purchase History, easily reorder your essentials, or start a Mobile Express Return—all within the app!
  • Print eReceipts for cash back apps: Select a purchase from your Purchase History, share, and print from your phone or email yourself your eReceipt. Then submit for cash back apps like Ibotta and Checkout51.

What do you think? Does this change the way you shop Walmart?

I don’t like this change.Leave well enough alone.People should be able to pay with cash if they want to.I like the saving catchers.

  2. Tj vanner

I think it’s terrible some people don’t have smartphones or they want to take the receipt home and do it on their laptop or computer. Not only that I don’t get service in Walmart and I’m sure other people don’t either.. stupid stupid move Walmart right before Christmas thanks greedy corporations

    • Cynthia K Hollingsworth

Yep, my mom and dad don’t have smartphones simply because they are older and they are confusing to them. This makes it impossible for them to use savings catcher anymore. Great going Walmart! 🙁

  3. Jessica J.

I have loyally been using Walmart Savings Catcher for over a year and a half. However, they have discontinued it in the entire state of New Hampshire. I called Walmart Customer Service after I repeatedly tried to submit receipts using Walmart Pay after the October 29th change to Walmart Pay submissions. The receipts would never go through and I only got error messages. The Walmart representative informed me that New Hampshire stores no longer participate in Savings Catcher. Also, Maine, Massachusetts, Tennessee, and I believe she also said Vermont. Walmart does not specify this anywhere that I could find online, so I just wanted to spread the word for those of you in those states, who like me, found that they could no longer submit their receipts to Savings Catcher.

    • Kathleen brackett

I live in Maine. Have been a loyal Walmart savings catcher customer!!! This makes me very angry. I’ll go to market basket now!!!

      • Jessica

Yes, I’ve been very upset that we no longer have access to Savings Catcher here in New England. I’m disappointed that they ended the program in all of Region 16, (NH, MA, VT & ME) as someone else commented. I agree that Market Basket is a good alternative. I’ll be paying close attention to their weekly circulars, as well as Shaw’s and Hannaford, to compare prices and find the best deals.

  4. Lafawn

I don’t like this change. I feel cheated out of a chance to save money. This savings catcher has helped me on many occasions when I didn’t have cash on hand and went inside Walmart and the money was on the app.

  5. Roger

What started out as a great program is piece by piece bring whittled away until there is nothing left! I guess WM doesn’t like cash any more.

  6. Sydney Barnett

I hate this new system. This is just a way to get you to use Walmart pay. Walmart had just lost my business because now I will go to the cheaper stores since I’m not getting that money back on my savings catcher. I am not going to use Walmart pay exclusively to pay for my purchases. So Walmart just lost my business. I’m very disappointed.

  7. Debbie Sorrels

Why change something that worked great for so many of us hard working Americans who are loyal to Walmart! This is a terrible change…… Not all of us have smartphones or the latest technology. People still do us flip phones! We have them for emergencies or just a simple phone call. Walmart you really need to rethink this change! I have been a loyal customer at Walmart for years and have been thankful for the Savings Catcher Program!

  8. Teri

I don’t like the change Walmart had made to the savings catcher it worked better the way it was, I have missed what I have purchased in November because I couldn’t figure out to use it and didn’t know it was changed. It needs to go back to the way it was.

  9. Audrey

This change really needs to be reversed. In addition to being unfair for those who don’t use smartphones and taking away the option to pay in CASH, it also excludes anyone who is using grocery pickup from submitting receipts, as Walmart Pay is not an option for grocery pickup payments. So frustrating.

    • LaTroy Thompson

Same here! I use the Grocery Pickup also. I used Walmart because of savings Catcher. I will start back giving the local grocers my business. This was a very greedy move by Walmart. I believe they did this just to cut down the rewards.

  10. Kevin Moser

Yes. Put it back the way it was. The app was so much easier to use. Just take the receipt(s) home, and scan them when I have a chance too. Also, trying to create the ereceipt at the store might start backing up lines, and some people want to save the money, but just don’t have the time to do the ereceipt thing right then and there. Needs to go back to the way it was.

  11. Karen Davis

I can’t believe that Walmart has changed this! Yeah now let’s hold up the lines at checkout!

  12. dorinahart

I always do Walmart pick up and you can’t pay with Walmart pay. Needless to say it might be time to change to Kroger pick up or Tom Thumb.

  13. Mandy

I do not like this change. I prefer the old method and will not use this going forward. If I use cash I get nothing which is not a perk to me

  14. Wendy Buchanan

I also do not like this change, I prefer to scan my receipts at home as I do not always have my phone handy since I use it in my vehicle for Music purposes I sometimes forget it in the console. Plus it is not fair to the ppl who prefer to pay with cash. I will discontinue shopping with them if I can not continue to get the benefits of scanning my receipts.

  15. Judi

I can’t find where you enter your pay slip now. What did you do?

    • Cynthia K Hollingsworth

They discontinued entering the slips unless you use Walmart Pay… bad decision on their part but they thing they know what’s best!

  16. Julie

Removing the option of being able to scan paper receipts into savings catcher was not the right business decision. Many people want to pay with cash AND I personally have others often do our grocery shopping while I am at work or travelling. They cannot use my Walmart pay app as I have my phone with me. I’ve always scanned all of our receipts and would like the option to do so again.

  17. Cindy McLain

I agree with so many others posts. I have used savings catcher since it began and have saved over $500. It’s been great. Then they rolled out the Walmart grocery pickup and that’s been great as well even though not being able to use coupons is a negative but still worth the convenience of not having to suffer through long ck out lines in store. But how’s I see we can’t submit our online grocery pickup order receipts any more to savings catcher. If any of the Walmart higher up powers that be read these comments, please take note. You will be losing customers. Maybe Walmart is just so big that they don’t need to care but I see a huge number affected by this latest savings catcher decision. There are other options available now for grocery pickup and it may be where this once loyal Walmart customer is headed.

  18. Donna

I prefer to use the savings catcher. I don’t understand the way Walmart pay works. What the QR.

    • Michelle Densel

Donna, the QR is the screwy looking square at the bottom of your receipt. The old way they did receipts u used to be able to scan that in the savings catcher and u would get back the difference once they compared prices(if there was a lower one found). The new way is to basically force u to use anything you have gotten back so u can submit the new receipt. And yep u gotta use your “rewards if u have no other pay option in the wal mart portion of the app. Its just confusing now and stupid to boot. To use it if u have rewards, u open the app and go to wal mart pay. When they give u the total u scan the same funny looking code on THEIR checkout machine. As of now, its stupid and pointless for me…..i usually use cash and will continue to do so after I use what i have accumulated in rewards……except ill use my cash at dollar general, big lots, ruler foods, save a lot……..if it aint broke……wal mart fixes it. Im out.

  19. Anna

Very unfair of walmart. I have been a customer since 1960. Attended the grand opening of store #2 in Harrison AR. They need to think of the little people like Sam Walton did

  20. Dusti Stamey

I don’t like this at all I do better at food lion now. So much for that they should have well enough alone why change what works.. don’t like it and want use it

  21. Carmen Hulce

I HATE ther fact that I can no longer accumulate my savings. I don’t want to submit my receipt and use my rewards on the dance transaction! Using$.30 at s time didn’t do me a damn bit of good… PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK!!!!!!!

  22. Cynthia K Hollingsworth

I don’t like the new system… sometimes I pay with cash and this really screws things up for me… leave it to Walmart to screw up a perfectly good program. Guess I’ll go back to Target… they still give out gift cards for purchases so I’ll just save that way! Goodbye Walmart!

  23. Hope Williams

Horrible decision, I have also missed entering several purchases because I could not figure out how to work the program. Just simply could not believe that they were making me pay with my Walmart card at checkout! I have asked a couple of cashier’s how the program worked, and they had no idea. Way to go Walmart…..will be buying my groceries at Kroger from now on.

  24. Mindy

I agree with many on this. This is NOT a convenience for my family. I would use the app every time and when things were slim I would use what I had on there to help out. I don’t want to use it this way and its a hassle. I think too many people were utilizing it and Wal Mart knows this will reduce the number of people that will participate. Add this to the hassle of checking ourselves out when there are 20+ registers empty and Wal-Mart isn’t worth the time. Customer service is a thing of the past. How “convenient” is any of this. I see elderly people completely overwhelmed by the process and am saddened that those living on a fixed income are forced to comply with such a “lazy” world. Sometimes the only people they ever got to talk to was the person taking their money. SAD, SAD, SAD.

  25. lassie

I liked the program the old way. I picked up receipts in the parking lot, used my mom, sister and neighbor’s receipts because they weren’t enrolled in the program. I loaded receipts on my computer. I didn’t have a huge app taking up space on my cell phone and I could easily print out my e-gift card and use it. Wal Mart isn’t losing money because of that, they’re losing money because they didn’t keep their eye on Amazon.com.

Yesterday a cashier told me there were people who save up lots of money and use it all at once, sometimes getting a big cart of groceries for free. So what? If they’ve earned it, who cares?

I will install the app, use my credit, uninstall the app and discontinue using the program. I won’t boycott Wal Mart, but I don’t really care about this program.

  26. john walters

I agree this new wrinkle to the savings catcher SUCKS makes it way HARDER for the elderly. It was, I guess too easy for the customer to scan their receipt at their leisure, now forced to fumble with the phones, at the checkout, which most elderly people don’t have tied to their waist like an umbilical cord. I was an early participant in this program and have seen how it keeps evolving, making it harder each time. AND most times Walmart would not honor or process the scanned receipts. Our family spends over $400 a week at Walmart that’s $20K a year!

  27. cf

Horrible change, shame on walmart trying to make people do more work to save a small portion. Guess its back to Target and the Red Card! At least with Target i get instant savings! I am not jumping through hoops so Walmart can make me pay the way they want me to to save time at the register! Buh Bye Walmart.

  28. Lisa

I do not like the change, I will not be using the walmart pay! I want to choose my own way of paying. Also I pay for my mothers items but I’m don’t leave near her so this helped me get back some money back. With the new app I won’t be able to do this any longer. I guess I will be shopping more at Meijers – too bad.

  29. laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

I understand everyone’s frustration. I started using Walmart pay when it first came out. I was accused of stealing several times and harrased by a particular employee for a while. All this because I didn’t receive a receipt at self checkout. The employee would refuse to look at my phone where the receipt was clearly shown. I sent an email to corporate and the store manager advising them that if they are going to offer an app then the employees need to be trained on the app! Not harrased for using it. I’ve never had a problem since.
The grocery pickup is my issue with this change. We use Walmart pay for grocery pickup! So that doesn’t make sense! I’ve called and emailed and summited suggestions through the app. I suggest everyone to do the same.

  30. Deborah deJongh

I do not like the Change, some of us don’t have all the fancy phones, But I do have Local Grocery Stores and will be shopping at them thru the Holiday. I tried not to do walmart and when you had the Saving catcher, that I could use, I started going there. Now I will shop elsewhere and tell my friends to boycut Walmart. You lie saying you beat competitors prices, you don’t you are a lot higher and you just found another way to screw to little people.

  31. Carol Gorman

Ridiculous….much better submitting receipt at home in former procedure….Careful Walmart……Fleet Farm and Aldi’s are now here in town and a well known Grocery store on the way….

  32. Steve

Walmart has eliminated Savings Catcher in entirety in NH, MA, VT & ME (Region 16). No word yet as to what, if anything, will replace the savings opportunity.

    • Jessica

Thanks for bringing attention to the fact that certain states have eliminated the program in its entirety. I live in NH and had to call Walmart Customer Service to get them to finally admit to that when my receipts would not process through the Savings Catcher App. The representative also mentioned that Tennessee no longer participates as well.

  33. TCM

I dont like the change to Wal-Mart Pay AT ALL! I prefer scanning my receipts. Please bring back the ability to scan receipts.

  34. Kathy

Stupid, stupid, stupid, such an awful corporation. Some people have cash and want to use cash. Some people like the paper receipt so they can Ibotta also (gotta save/get money from every angle possible). Now we would HAVE to pay with credit or debit or gift card then print our own receipt to have a paper one? Idiots.

  35. Brandi Gunter

I hate this new way its irritating and I wish we would have never changed it

  36. SAMANTHA L WHITFIELD

    This sucks big time

  37. Anke Wiggins

I hate this. I do not have an IPhone and need to do this at my home computer.
Please Walmart reverse this stupid decision.

  38. Larissa M Loom

I’m not sure you can do what you say above with printing the e-receipt to submit to ibotta. I tried the Walmart grocery pick up and learned that you only get a digital receipt. I had several ibottas in my order. I tried to print the receipt and submit to ibotta and they rejected it. I went to Walmart customer service and asked for a paper receipt and they couldn’t print one. Ibotta did give me my rebates after much back and forth but it was quite clear that they don’t take e-receipts. If only the e-receipt had the QR code at the bottom!

  39. Margie F. Burton

We have about $40 in the Savings Catcher. We have no smart phones. Husband is 90 and I am 87. Smart phones are very confusing to us. We shop WalMart hoping to have a few dollars, but this is no longer working for us. Please just send us some way that we can collect the monies owned to us. We were hoping to use this money for our Thanksgiving. Thank you

    • Barbara

I agree. Not everyone uses I phones my mom doesn’t. She lives on a fixed income and every dollar saved really helped

  40. Barbara

I hate the new savings catcher!! I have used this ap from the beginning. I don’t know how to use this new one. I’ll be going to another grocery store from now on. I spend any where between $200 and $300 a week at Walmart. Walmart you just lost a customer. I’ll go to Kroger from now on

  41. Elaine

I don’t like the new savings catcher. I don’t know how to use this new one. I go to Walmart 3 times a week. I will being doing my own price checking and don’t know if I will go back to Walmart.

  42. Martha Tucker

I dislike these changes. My husband does a LOT of shopping for me and refuses to use Walmart Pay. Therefore, we are unable to submit legitimate receipts. This is wrong !!!

  43. Jennifer

Walmart doesn’t care about meeting people’s needs. The new changes to the Savings Catcher are not convenient at all! And they are penalizing people that pay with actual cash at the register! There is alot of Dollar General Stores being built in many locations right now. Convenience is the key to customers!!

  44. Naomi

This new change is horrible. I have tried scanning the walmart pay thing and it is not user friendly and the cashiers I asked did not even know how to help. I will go to cheaper stores now since I cant price match . I had been a loyal walmart user but its time for a change.

  45. Crystal

This has made me mad first let’s take away price match and now they are trying to force people to pay with their phone which is the only way to use savings catcher. Maybe they should have informed the public of the changes way in advance. I use to love shopping at Walmart but it has changed so much. Sam Walton would be discouraged with how they run things now. And God forbid they have cashiers they are forcing people to use self check. They are actually pushing good employees away and losing customers due to the lack of help.

  46. valerienicks

I had so fun while it lasted, I enjoyed scanning my receipts and waiting to see if there was savings. It occasionally made my day to get a couple dollars savings from Walmart. I am one who likes to pay in cash as there are still people who want to pay this way Walmart! It seems no cashiers are going to be needed. There goes a lot of jobs. I recently went through a line when a cashier said it’s busy in here and very tiring at the end of night but I’m glad to have a job.

  47. Mrs. Gier

I am not happy about this change. I liked savings catcher and with all the hacking I prefer not to have my debit card sitting in some website waiting to be hacked. I loved savings catcher. I guess since it won’t be saving me money I will just start shopping the mom and pop stores. So irritated at this change.

  48. Jason and Alison

My wife and I have spent $100+ at the Walmart in Halifax MA on groceries every Sunday morning for at least two years not to mention holiday shopping, electronics and home goods purchases. We love the staff there and my current anger at WM has nothing to do with them. After this savings catcher nonsense I have decided we will be boycotting WM.. again, my last boycott lasted 5 years.

When I found out I was being forced to use Walmart pay I was initially turned off. I don’t like being told how to pay for my purchases. None of my anger is about the money.. $2-4 a week rebates doesn’t change my life but after stewing on it and losing out for a few weeks I decided the change wasn’t that big a deal to me. I already had WM pay and didn’t need to really change my life at all to use WM pay.

    Soooo….

This morning I used WM pay for the first time to pay for our groceries… $132 with the addition of Thanksgiving supplies and an ugly Christmas sweater for the wife. I then had a window pop up saying if I turn on “location” and “notifications” I can submit my receipt to savings catcher. This is where I draw the line for $2-4 a week in rebates. Walmart is trying to turn its customers into the product. I know this sounds like I should be wearing a tin foil hat but they want “locations” so they can track us and sell our information. This is how the new economy works, how do you think Google l and Facebook make the bulk of their billions in revenue every year?

This know I’m ranting so I’ll stop in a moment but let me leave with this. Warren Buffet finished liquidating his position in Walmart over the last couple weeks. I’ll be following his lead and ending my customer relationship with them and shorting the stock every time it goes up moving forward.

  49. Owen

Horrible idea. I don’t want to stand at the checkout fiddling with my smartphone and holding up the line to _maybe_ save a few cents. I’d rather just scan it when I get home. I suspect wal-mart was losing more money than they expected they would. First they did away with price matching, now savings catcher. It’s more about what they are losing than convenience for the end user.

  50. Donna Criswell

Terrible change! It worked so good before and someone that doesn’t even probably use this created this. Not everyone has a smartphone. Makes it very confusing for elderly and now not available. I’m probably at Walmart 5 times a week. You want our business so keep things the way they were. And help put the people that make you rich.
