Grilled Ham and Cheese Pull-Apart Sandwiches (Fun Camping Meal Idea)

15 min Serves 6

Grilled Ham & Cheese Pull-Apart Sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 10-12 inch Italian bread loaf
  • 12 slices Swiss cheese
  • 12 slices thinly sliced ham (about 3/4 lb.)
  • 1 tablespoon spicy brown or Dijon mustard
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • foil and cooking oil

Directions

1

Place bread on several sheets of foil that have been sprayed with cooking oil.

2

Using a bread knife, evenly space about 12 slices on the loaf without cutting all the way through it.

3

In a small bowl, stir together butter, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.

4

Use a kitchen brush to coat the bread slices with butter mixture, both inside and around the outside of bread.

5

In between each bread slice, fold and tuck in cheese and ham.

6

Seal up foil around the loaf and grill on medium heat for about 20 minutes on an outdoor BBQ grill, turning frequently until cheese is melted and bread toasted. (Can also alternatively place by the hot coals of a camp fire, or in a 400 degree indoor oven.)

7

To serve, open packet carefully to let steam out, then pull apart sandwiches.

I love how the cheese melts with the buttery mustard mixture to create this fantastic tasting crusty texture. If ham and Swiss cheese isn’t your favorite, easily change up the meat and cheese combo to what your family loves!

These Ham and Cheese Pull-Apart Sandwiches are very easy to make, and taste so YUMMY!

I grilled this while the kids were swimming and they were happy to enjoy them outside as a fun lunch idea. I think they would also be fun for a party or on game day while tail-gating!

Can’t wait to try this out! Thanks for the wonderful idea! ๐Ÿ˜

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Sure- enjoy Jessica!

  2. Jessi

That looks delicious. I don’t understand how to pull it apart, wouldn’t it pull apart in the places with the meat and cheese? Resulting in a big mess?

    • rebecca

i was thinking the same thing– but i guess if it pulls apart where the ham & cheese are stacked, then you could eat it like an open-face slice of sandwich.

      • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Yes we ate it like an open faced sandwich. ๐Ÿ‘

    • Laura

I could be wrong because I haven’t made these, but I think you’d only fill every other crack with the meat and cheese? So you’d have bread next to bread in the loaf too so it would the start of a new sandwich? If that even makes sense written out… Try looking at the pic stain again and you can see not all the cracks are filled ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Laura

The grilled pic shows it, not the uncooked one ๐Ÿ˜‰. Hope it helps!!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

We are it like open faced sandwiches. I wouldn’t say super messy just yummy! But if you prefer the other method of using Hawaiian rolls to make sliders they could be less messy.

Love these camping food posts! Thank you Lina! We did your foil packets last time and I was the family hero! Can’t wait to try this guy out.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      That’s so great!

I’ve made this with the pack of slider buns. You separate the tops from bottoms and put everything in the middle. Its delicious!

  5. bb

If you want to use the loaf cut it in a horizontal cut instead of the vertical cut and you would not have the mess.

My mom has been making these forever- we call them poker sandwiches. She uses foil sheets to wrap individual rolls, and you can heat up one or two or all of them as needed. My mouth is watering looking at the pictures- itโ€™s such a delicious combination. Extra cheese is always the best. Try adding bread and butter pickles too.

    • Lina D

YES to the pickles – sounds yummy! Thanks Julie ๐Ÿ™‚

Off topic but thereโ€™s something really wrong with this new app.. comments are in random order from poster to commenters .. Iโ€™m seeing posts from days ago.. when I go to a specific store and click on the first post, it wonโ€™t ever bring me to the one I clicked on.. but the next one down, half the time I canโ€™t comment on things without an error message.. not happy that I did the update. ๐Ÿ™„

    • Jennifer

I’m having the same problem on the iPhone app when clicking on “stores” at the bottom of the screen, clicking CVS and then clicking the first post. It takes me to the prior post. (Ex: trying to open post about Covergirl takes me to the prior post about prints.) Definitely a glitch/bug with the new update.
