Need a Magic Eraser?

Cleaning walls can become a literal nightmare! Whether your kiddos decided to use the wall as a canvas or it just looks dirty, the tedious task of cleaning your wall is something no one looks forward to. Lucky for us, this week’s Happy Friday reader Varsha created a homemade wall cleaner that removed a huge mess!

Hip Tip: Before embarking on cleaning your whole wall with this tip, you may want to test it on an inconspicuous area first as some paint finishes (like flat paint!) can be left with marks after scrubbing them.

messy wall

I have little ones who have made a complete mess on my wall using pencils, pens, crayons, and pretty much anything else you could think of. Because of this, my husband and I would spend around $5 on magic eraser products.

Instead of continuing to spend this, I decided to try to make something similar homemade.

To make it, I use one spoonful of dish soap and mix it with some water. I used a sponge, and I’m still so surprised at how well it cleaned my walls. It’s so simple that I’ll never buy a magic eraser product again!

Varsha, thanks for the cleaning Hip tip! This is going to go a long way for a bunch of us, especially those with little ones. Those wall art projects are no match for this home cleaner!

Going to sound bad, but are there (not flat) textured wall paints?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hey there! I have found “Roll On” texture options available from Lowe’s. You can even purchase texture to add to your wall paint. Hope that helps!

      • TheQueenBee

Wow! I’ll take a look. Thank you so much.

if you are wondering what they meant by “flat” they meant the finish; wall-paints are classified as things like satin, eggshell, high-gloss, etc, and some are considered flat, as opposed to shiny.

if that’s not what you meant, and you are honestly looking for a good textured paint, Ralph Lauren used to make an excellent one (IDK if they still do) but i used it several years ago and was amazed, b/c it turns out looking like you applied suede wallpaper to the walls. it looks totally luxe if you follow the directions. it looks in the can as if it has fine sand and sparkles in it, but on the wall it doesn’t look like that at all. it feels gritty when wet, but dries as a texture that does not look like sand or glitter.

Confused, is this a post telling us to use soap and water to clean?
