Are You a Victim of the Target Dollar Spot?

NOTE FROM COLLIN: Similar to how we do our Try Me Tuesday posts with product recommendations, I thought it would be also fun to do basically the complete opposite. With that said, I introduce “Waste of Money Wednesday!” 😂 This post will be exactly that – the Hip2Save team will be sharing products that they aren’t happy with, products they feel are a waste of money – basically product UN-recommendations.
Hi there! It’s Michelle – one of the Hip2Save Sidekicks!
I have a little tradition I’ve started. It goes like this:
Enter Target, head straight for Target Dollar Spot, put a bunch of useless items in my cart and then happily do my real shopping.
You can likely relate if you’ve been a victim of the Target Dollar Spot. And by victim I mean totally willing shopper who fills up her cart with all of those lovely $1 to $3 items. 😳
The one thing I cannot resist is their magnetic note pads. I have dreams of a little notepad that stays on my fridge so I can update my shopping list as we run out of things.
I keep buying these magnetic shopping lists and they keep breaking within the first week. Somehow the pages get bumped and the whole thing falls apart. Of course I’ll still buy one every time I go into the store because they are always so dang cute, but they just don’t hold up very well.
If I’m being honest my weakness is more than just the magnetic notepads. It’s actually ALL of the stationery items. I try and resist, but the prettiest pencils and the cutest notepads are always waiting for me. And I need it all. 😬
As I was writing this post I went to pull a “few things” I’d bought out of a drawer, and whoops – those few things are actually a lot of things. Most of them are still in the package.
And you’d think that would deter me, however here are a few things I picked up yesterday! So although I get frustrated when my magnetic list pads fall apart, it’s just $1 I’ve wasted and the joy I get from just putting the items in my cart and pushing them around the store is well worth the wasted money. 😉
Did you know that you can now shop for some of these items online too?! This is SO not good.

I have bought lighting balls, alphabet books, bubble soaps, cars etc. Never bought anything above $1. I may check out the magnet you all talking about.
I am a victim of the magnetic note pads…. One thing I do… that I don’t feel terrible about is buying a cheap dollar toy for my daughter instead of buying a 3 to 5 dollar blind bag. Not WORTH a lot.. But will subdue her as we look in the toy section.
I teach at a college in a female dominated program and buy little goodies from the dollar section to keep in a prize box for when we play any games that have winners. They love the pens and paper clips and notebooks. Useful and so cute and poor college kids eat that kinda stuff up! I put candy and coffee in there too which are also big hits!
That is a Great idea. Thank you for sharing
I do the same with my high school kids! They love the fun little erasers and pencils. Also threw some airheads in there from the last deal and they go like crazy too.
LOL!! OMG you hit the nail on the head. This was hilarious because I can totally relate. Thanks for letting me know I’m not alone!
I am a sucker for the stationary, too! Especially the fun file folders. My favorite folder says “Oh la la!’ I love the wooden pencils and ceramic coffee mugs. The pencils have a nice writing feel to them….
Yes!! The pencils are so cute!
That stuff, eventually, ends up at Dirt Cheap. So, I usually, buy a lot of the items, when they drop to 10/$1.
Me, too! Love Dirt Cheap!!
My Achillies Heal used to be when Dollar Spot merchandise was clearance. I would purchase multiple quantities of various things for goodie bags. School party goodie bags, Cub Scout goodie bags and birthday party goodie bags. I have two boys so why I chose to get so many girl things is beyond me. Both my boys have aged out of the goodie bag phase and I was left with a lot of junk which I tried to sell for .25 at my garage sale. I have learned it’s best not to stock on something unless you are 100% certain what you will be using it for.
I have now bought 3 blanket scarves despite the fact that I love in Florida and it’s 85 degrees today. In general, I have a winter wear problem.
Thank you. That made me laugh.
I have a flip flop problem, and live in Wisconsin! Let’s trade places for the next 4 months!!
Lol!! This was great!! 😂😂😂
It’s not a waste if you work in an office and use stationary all the time! I love it! Brightens up my work day.
I love those magnetic lists. We are lucky because ours has not fallen apart ever.
Unfortunately I’ve stopped shopping it since most of the stuff went $3 to 8. Haven’t stopped bye since :-/
